Message from GoldenWest College President,Wes BryanThe Golden West College Foundationdoes not charge a management oradministrative fee. The entire scholarshipdonation is given to the student.Every Fall semester, the college and the Foundationhost our Courtyard of Honor Ceremony to jointlycelebrate outstanding alumni and donors. In mywelcome introduction, I made a statement I would liketo share with you again: “Whenever a college presidentis asked what your favorite day is, you’re supposedto say ‘graduation.’ But, today, (Courtyard of Honor)is my favorite day because we get to see what makesgraduation possible. The world is forever changedbecause people like you support the institution; studentslike these take advantage of opportunities available tothem, and teachers provide the foundation.”2007 Scholarships & Awards, con’t.Disabled StudentScholarshipsGladys Lavoie Scholarship*Paul and June Cope Memorial Scholarship*Wm. “Boyed” Hudnall Memorial Scholarship*EOP&S/C.A.R.E.ScholarshipsExtended Opportunity Program & Services(EOP&S) ScholarshipSimeon Pete Shaffer Memorial Scholarship*This event allowed us the opportunity to hear the stories of four very unique graduates andhow their time at Golden West College made a difference in their lives and how they are payingthat back in service to others. We also recognized and thanked those who have contributedtime and resources to help build this Foundation and provide increasing opportunities for newstudents who might otherwise not be able to attend college. Yes, it was a very special day, made possible by the generosity of this Foundation.Living in an affluent area, we sometimes forget how important these efforts are in makinga significant difference in the lives of our students. Meeting graduates years later simplyvalidates what we already know intuitively — that an education not only improves the qualityof an individual life, it contributes to the community as a whole. We know that students whoearn a vocational degree or certificate will see their wages jump from 25,600 to 47,571 injust three years. We also know they are more likely to be involved in community service, livehealthier lives, and have greater job satisfaction. I am proud to be associated with a FoundationBoard that understands the importance of educational opportunities, donates their time, andexpends their energy to help students in need.General ScholarshipsAlumni Scholarship*Anniversary Scholarship*Barbara & Corder Wattenbarger ScholarshipBonnie and Radford Robinson MemorialScholarship*Bob Polentz, Foundation Chairman, awarded theGWC Foundation Scholarship to Jessica Duran.Dawn Hammond Memorial Scholarship*Dominic Scolaro Memorial Scholarship*Don & Doris Randol Memorial Scholarship*Dr. James Thornton Scholarship*Dr. Philip Westin Scholarship*Fred Garcia Scholarship*I am happy that our donors realize and understand the importance of supporting two-yearinstitutions and their students to help prepare them for transfer or learn entry level job skills. They know that if they can help them get a strong start, students are more likely to finishtheir degree or certification. Community colleges play a central role in workforce and transferpreparation.I hope as you review this report you will consider involving yourself to a greater degree inthe projects that our campus community sponsors. Without your support, the college couldnot begin to offer the scholarships and programs which provide our students with so manyavenues to success. I am excited to be on this Board as we make plans together to ensure thatthe next 40 years will be as bright as the last.GWC Foundation Scholarship*GWC General Scholarship*Herman R. Callan doesn’t fault the schools for their wealth, but says that having money comes witha special responsibility. “They’re increasingly becoming institutions that serve primarily thehighest-income strata of American society, and we’ve thought of them historically . as avenuesof social mobility. The 25-yard, eight-lane pool is one of the projects completedwith Measure C funds. Replacing a much outdated facility, the newpool is one of the fastest in the nation. Olympic-sized (52 metersby 25 yards), it has a moveable bulkhead, allowing for a variety ofcompetition course layouts. Already this year, activities at the newpool include an exhibition game between the USA Women’s WaterPolo team and the silver medal winning team from Australia. The newfacility will support the college’s sports teams, aquatics classes, andhigh school and community groups. But the honor of “first splash” wasgiven to Rita Simonton (pictured at right), long time supporter of GWCaquatics, and past Alumni Pillar recipient-turning just 90 years youngthis year!A Groundbreaking MomentOn July 18, a ceremony was held to break ground for Golden WestCollege’s newest addition – a 25,000 square foot Health Sciencesbuilding. The three-story building will be home to the nursing programas well as the student health center, creating in-house internshipopportunities for nursing students. “The building is sorely neededfor the health sciences program,” stated Golden West PresidentWes Bryan. “With the current shortage of nurses in California, thisprogram is important to our students, our community and our state.”The Golden West College Foundation will be considering namingopportunities in the near future. “We’re confident that we will findthe perfect union between business and academia,” says FoundationDirector Margie Bunten.Pictured left to right: Dr. Kenneth Yglesias, Chancellor-CCCD, TrusteesArmando Ruiz and Mary L.
