Exploring DublinBy Denny LynchNo trip to Ireland is complete without spendinga few days exploring Dublin. This city, whichemerged as a Viking settlement in the 9thcentury and evolved into one of Europe’s most vibrantcapitals, offers the tourist endless attractions. Whetherit’s attending a play at the Abbey Theatre, visitingDublin Castle, shopping on Grafton Street or having apint at the Guinness Storehouse there is something forevery visitor to enjoy. Here are some suggestions toenhance your Dublin experience. After being fortified by a hearty, full Irish breakfast, make your first destination Glasnevin Cemetery. Ifyou arrive early in the morning you may be the onlyliving soul there, save for the groundskeeper. Openedin 1832, this legendary graveyard is the resting placefor the greatest patriots and political leaders thathelped to create the free nation of Ireland. Buriedhere are Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell,Michael Collins, Eamon de Valera, and CountessConstance Markievicz. You can also visit the graves ofwriters Brendan Behan and Gerard Manley Hopkins. One could spend half a day here, but since you’re inthe neigborhood, stop by a real Dublin haunt: JohnKavanagh’s Bar, AKA The Gravediggers. This is wherethose essential workers quenched their thirsts. It’slocated near the old eastern gate of the cemetery.Next, go to O’Connell Street. This major thoroughfareon Dublin’s northside is dotted with monuments thatpay tribute to icons in Irish history. There is a statuehonoring Daniel O’Connell who fought for Catholiccivil rights in the first half of the19th century, andone for James Larkin, the labor union organizer ofthe early 20th century. You will also see the Spire, astainless steel cone 398 feet tall erected in 2003. Themost important landmark on this boulevard is thehistoric General Post Office or GPO. It is to the Irishwhat Philadelphia’s Independence Hall is to Americans. On Easter Monday 1916 Padraig Pearse, commanderinchief of the rebellion, stood in the portico of theGPO and read aloud the Proclamation of the IrishRepublic. This signalled the beginning of a new nation.Dublin will forever be remembered for the EasterRising of 1916. That week-long insurrection againstBritish rule was set in motion by courageous Irishrebels. Today names of these patriots appear onbuildings and street signs, and call out to you: HeustonStation, Connolly Station, Pearse Street and SeanMacDermott Street. For more information on this topicvisit the National Museum of Decorative Arts andHistory (AKA Collins Barracks). It can be reached bytaking the Red Line of Luas, part of the city’s light railsystem.Dublin is closely associated with some of Ireland’smost gifted writers: W.B. Yeats, Sean O’Casey, SamuelBeckett, Brendan Behan and James Joyce. TouristsContinuedwww.irishparade.net March 13, 202217

who are fans of Irish literature and especially worksby Joyce will want to visit the James Joyce CulturalCentre on Great George’s Street. Located in a beautifulGeorgian house, the Centre celebrates his life andart through photographs, tableaux and interactiveexhibits. Those familiar with his novel Ulysses, willwant to participate in one of the Centre’s walkingtours. This experience may inspire you to wanderthrough the rest of Dublin as Leopold Bloom orStephen Dedalus, protagonists in that masterpiece. Now it’s time to explore places of interest on thesouth bank of the River Liffey. There is a smorgasbordof attractions to choose from. Cross the river on the19th-century Ha’penny Bridge. This pedestrian bridgeis one of the city’s most recognized landmarks; it’slike a Dublin celebrity. If seagulls soar above you whencrossing, consider them your welcoming committee!History lovers should go directly to the NationalMuseum of Archaeology (a branch of the NationalMuseum of Ireland) on Kildare Street and prepare tobe dazzled! Within this museum are some of the mostexquisite artifacts ever created; many were foundburied in bogs and farmlands throughout Ireland.Start by examining the gold jewelry created duringthe Bronze Age. Don’t miss the Gleninsheen Gorget,a gorgeous gold collar. Next, step into The Treasury18where you will see the following masterpieces fromIreland’s early Christian era: the Ardagh Chalice, theCross of Cong, the Tara Brooch, and St. Patrick’s Bell.A short walk away, on Merrion Square West, is abuilding that art enthusiasts will want to enter: theNational Gallery of Ireland. This museum has a superbcollection of paintings by Irish artists from the 19thand 20th centuries; look for work by Jack B. Yeats. Also in its permanent collection are paintings byVermeer, Goya, Rembrandt, Velazquez and FrenchImpressionists. Be sure to see The Taking of Christby the Italian master Caravaggio; it’s believed thatthe artist depicted himself in this painting as a manholding a lantern.Include in your itinerary two historic AnglicanCathedrals: Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’sCathedral. Christ Church Cathedral was constructedin the late 12th century. The architecture reflectsthe Norman and Gothic periods. The remains of theinfamous Norman warlord Strongbow are buriedhere. The nave features beautiful gothic arches andthe crypt, full of interesting artifacts, is thought to bethe oldest structure in the city. Nearby is St. Patrick’sCathedral, where Jonathan Swift is buried and wasdean from 1713 to 1745. This edifice is brimming withmemorials and tombs.www.irishparade.net March 13, 2022

Factor into your schedule a visit to Kilmainham Gaol. This historic jail, which opened in 1796, held some ofIreland’s greatest freedom fighters like Robert Emmet, leader of the 1803 rebellion. On a guided tour youwill see the cells of famous prisoners and the chapelwhere the rebel Joseph Plunkett and Grace Giffordwere married, just hours before he was executed. Inaddition, you will be taken to the Stone Breakers’ Yardwhere the 14 leaders of the 1916 Rising were killed byfiring squads. This jail was witness to great momentsof heroism and heartbreak. Finally, proceed to Trinity College, established in 1592by Queen Elizabeth I. Tourists come here to see theBook of Kells which is displayed in the Old Librarylocated on this campus. This illuminated manuscript,of the four Gospels, was created by Irish monks in the9th century. It is considered by scholars as one of thegreat treasures of Europe’s medieval period. The 680pages contain stunning, artful calligraphy and opulentdecorations. Also on exhibit in the library is the famous15th century harp, sometimes referred to as the BrianBoru harp. As you know, the harp is the nationalemblem of Ireland, and this particular one is believedto be the oldest surviving Irish harp in the country. There is so much more to discover in Dublin;something always beckons. And remember you willalways be welcomed by Dubliners. Oh, one more thing:Don’t forget your umbrella.Photographer Denny Lynch has been exibiting his work in New York,Paris and parts of Ireland since the 1990’s. Michael P. “Mick”O’SHEA1943–2021There is an oldGaelic word,“Anam,” that meanssoul. “Cara” is theGaelic word forfriend. Anam carain the Gaelic worldis a soul friend. To Baltimore’sIrish community,Mike O’Shea wasour Anam cara.Sadly, we lost Michael P. “Mick” O’Shea back in October. Along-time member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, Mick served asPresident of the Friendly Sons, the Grand Marshall of the Baltimore SaintPatrick’s Day parade, and Chairman of the Baltimore Irish festival. In 1995, he realized every Irish man’s dream when he, with some familymembers and close friends, bought McGinn’s Irish Pub on CharlesStreet and reopened it as Mick O’Shea’s. Every year since 1996, Mickhas presided over the north end of the parade at the “Unofficial”reviewing stand, just outside the pub.Countless friends and family enjoyed the pub crawls of Ireland heorganized, with his daughter Tammy, sharing his love for Ireland withas many people as possible. Mike held dual-citizenship for manyyears, proudly carrying his Irish passport as he lead groups around hisancestral home.Mike was also an active participant in the Irish Jasper Greens singingIrish songs, in the traditional seisiún style. The Jasper Greens donateall monies they make from performances to support the renovation andupkeep of St. Patrick’s Chapel in Conowingo, Maryland. As a 1960 graduate of Calvert Hall College, Mike was fiercely loyal tohis alma mater and was thrilled to have the school’s marching bandparticipate in the St. Patrick’s Day parade every year.He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Corky, and the fivedaughters he shared with his first wife, Kathleen Rooney O’Shea: KellyO’Shea Swanson (Conrad), Tammy O’Shea Bulluck (Harry), JackieO’Shea Moore (Chris), Colleen O’Shea Rayburn (Eric), Heather O’Sheaand a step-daughter, Kelly McNamara Beck (Jaret). THE MARYLANDIRISH FESTIVALPAST & PRESENTSix years after the deadly riots of 1968, Baltimore was still tornby racial unrest. In an effort to bring unity and draw people backto the downtown area, Mayor Schaefer declared a Festival of AllNations. It was at Hopkins Plaza, July 6, 1974, that the first BaltimoreCity Irish Festival took place from 12:00-6:00 P.M., on asphalt,in blistering heat with around 200 attendees. The Spalpeensdonated their time, performing four 45-minute sets. AnnetteCribbin, Baltimore’s first Irish Dance teacher, showcased herstudents in the first of many dance performances at the festival;her studio later became the Broesler School of Irish Dance. BillyGuerin recalls scooping ice cream all afternoon, volunteering asa 15-year-old for the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH). Insubsequent years, he presented movies from the Irish TourismBoard in the lobby of the Federal Building. Guerin, along withJim Burns and Leo Welch, have volunteered at every festivalsince its inception 47 years ago.An indelible memory from the early days was the green waterfountain. Children would dive in and emerge with greenclothing. Likewise, their parents’ faces were streaked in greenfrom cooling off in the scorching heat. Knowledge of this greenfountain reached Ireland and put Baltimore and the festival onthe map!Between 1974 – 1983, Larry Smith single handedly wore everyhat required for a festival presenter. Also, with its lack of shade, occasional rain and increasing numbers, Hop
