Organizational Sign- On Statement In Opposition To The Proposed Regulation

PIF CAMPAIGNOCTOBER 10, 2018ORGANIZATIONAL SIGN-ON STATEMENTIN OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED REGULATIONThe Trump Administration formally proposed sweeping regulations this morning that endanger thelives of immigrant families, including families with children born in the United States. The “publiccharge” regulation puts money ahead of family, and threatens to worsen hunger, poverty, and unmethealth and housing needs. This is not the kind of nation we want to be.This proposed regulation would mark a fundamental change from our nation's historic commitmentto welcoming immigrants. It would radically reshape our legal immigration system, putting thewealthy at the front of the line, ahead of hardworking families who have waited years to reunite. Nolonger would the U.S. be a beacon for the world’s dreamers and strivers. Instead, America’s doorswould be open only to the highest bidder. The proposal also deepens the nation’s racial divide. Immigrants who come to the United Statesthrough a family-based petition are overwhelmingly immigrants of color. The Administration’s choiceto target family-based immigrants will worsen disparities in health, hunger, and every other socialmalady.Sweeping in its effect, the rule discounts the contribution of working families. It would chill access tocritical programs that help tax-paying immigrants and their families access health care, food, andother essential needs. These programs have helped to improve participants’ health, well-being,school success, and economic security. The proposal would make—and has already made—immigrantfamilies afraid to seek programs that support basic needs. With about one in four children having atleast one immigrant parent, this issue touches millions and is critical now and for our nation’s future. We, the undersigned, strongly oppose this proposed rule, which threatens the health and wellbeingof all of us, including immigrants. We urge the public to speak out against this dangerous proposal,by submitting comments opposing it online at www.protectingimmigrantfamilies.org. We also urgethe Administration to withdraw the proposal and work with us to build policies that supportimmigrants as healthy, productive and successful members of America’s communities and families.ProtectingImmigrantFamilies.org 1
