In 2021,GCC developed and deployed work-ready trainingprograms at the pace of one per month, developedintensive certification programs for critical healthworkers to meet COVID demands, and completed ourfirst year of the new four-year Bachelor of Science inCareer Technical Education. To support our campuscommunity, we partnered with WestCare, PacificIslands to offer counseling and self-care on campus,and we extended our laptop/MiFi loaner programs tostudents. This year, GCC reached another milestonewith it’s 21st consecutive clean audit! GuamCommunity College took the needs identifiedduring our Workforce OpportunitiesReimagined Conference (WORC) and WORC2conferences and turned them into the mostprolific job training program in the region. Inresponse to the high unemployment broughtabout by the near shutdown of the economy,GCC stood up 17 work-ready boot camps in 12months, at an 83% completion rate. As a result,a majority of boot camp completers wereoffered employment as apprentices in newcareers in high demand occupations.In Fall 2020, GCC welcomed Dr.Virginia Tudela, PhD, as the new VicePresident for Academic Affairs, andRodalyn Gerardo, CPA, CGFM, CIA,as the new Vice President for Finance and Administration.GCC’s President, Dr. Mary Okada was chosen as the US SmallBusiness Association’s Women in Business Champion of theYear.In March 2021, the College was recognized for its 20thconsecutive clean audit. GCC is the only Government ofGuam agency to have achieved this milestone.GCC ProStart student, Alexandria Valencia De Chavez, fromTiyan High School, placed First Runner-Up in the NationalRestaurant Association’s nation-wide “Give Us Your BestPitch” Contest, for her sustainable restaurant concept,Boka Ni Mangi, that gives patrons the opportunity to earntheir meal by helping the restaurant harvest its farm grownvegetables that are used in the meals they prepare.SUSTAINABILITYPV Production: 222.359 megawatt-hoursRecycling Data: Approximately 8,665 poundsdiverted (recycled/reused)WBFS Data: 9,001 x 12 oz plastic bottles savedCHALLENGESCO2 Reduced: 279,072 poundsDeclining enrollment continued in 2021, as the COVID-19threat level remained high and restrictions limited in-personattendance. Fall 2021 enrollment was at 1,690, a 6% declinefrom Fall 2020. While remote learning accommodations weremade, a significant section of our population opted out ofdistance learning methods.Energy savings: Energy usage 2,602,340.01kilowatt-hour, a 589,223.40 kilowatt-hourdecrease compared to FY 2020 (18.46% savings)Water Usage: 2,442,634 gallons(15.09% savings compared to FY 20)OUR OUTLOOKCAMPUS FACILITIESBuilding 300 renovation experienced majorchallenges as a result of the COVID-19pandemic including shortages of materials,shipping delays, and shortages of workers. Theproject continues to move forward; however,due to challenges, the expected completiondate was pushed backed dramatically. Theanticipated completion date is set for 2022.At the end of fiscal year 2021, the Gregorio D.Perez Crime Lab Annex was approximately79.19% completed. The main contractorexperienced challenges as a result of theCOVID-19 pandemic. The project is scheduledto be completed by the end of 2022.Focusing On Success. Responding to the needs of our islandduring the COVID-19 pandemic has created opportunities forGuam Community College to advance the delivery of effectiveeducation and job training. Our academic programs continue toevolve and expand in response to the needs and demands of ourisland and region. Our new Bachelors of Science in Career andTechnical Education (BS CTE) program will meet the teachershortage head-on. Our Associate of Science in Practical Nursing(AS PN) program graduated its first class since expanding froma certificate to degree program. As these programs continue,we will realize significant progress in these areas of criticalshortage.On the workforce development front, GCC’s rapidly expandingwork-ready Boot Camps are proving highly effective at takingparticipants from training to employment in rapid succession,while providing the opportunity for them to enter intoapprenticeship.
