The “Grey” team, led bydates the formation of the Calgary Bantam Football Association. head coach Remo Cardone, finished the regular season with 5Jim started coaching in 1962 and was one of the founding mem- wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie, then got hot rolling all the way to thebers of the CBFA in 1964. Over the past 50 years, Jim has served Provincial Tier II Final where they defeated the Edmonton Musas both a coach and administrator in the CBFA and was a driving tangs 36-7. Coach Cardone has a long history of success in theforce behind the development of the outstanding football facili- coaching ranks having lead teams from Atom to High School butty at Shouldice Park. Having served as a director, Vice President, it is for his work with the Cowboys “Grey” team that we arePresident, and Past President of the CBFA, sometimes on two or proud to present him with the Atom/Pee-Wee Coach of the Yearmore occasions during his tenure, Jim has worked hard to make Award for 2012.sure the kids have a level playing field and get an enjoyable season each year. For this we are proud to present Jim Courchesnewith the Gary Hobson Award for 2012.Harold Ferguson Official of the YearKelly Edgeworth – Edmonton Football OfficialsBantam Coach of the YearAl Cooper – Calgary CowboysKelly Edgeworth has been an official in the Edmonton FootballOfficials Association for 10 years. In that time he has developedinto one of the top officials in the Province at the same timegiving back to the association serving as Training Chairman forthe last 5 years. As Training Chairman he has assisted greatly inthe recruitment, training and retention of new officials thathave risen to meet the growing demand for officials in Edmontonand Northern Alberta. He is constantly active on field and officiates games from Atom right up to CIS on any given week duringthe season. On top of that he was named head referee in theHardy Cup and Mitchell Bowls of the CIS this past season which isquite an accomplishment and makes him a very worthy recipientof the Harold Ferguson Official of the Year Award. One of the most successful minor football coaches in the historyof Alberta football has risen to the top again. As well as being aprolific builder of the sport, having co-founded the Atom, PeeWee and Midget Leagues in the Calgary area, Coach Cooper hasalso lead his Cowboys to eight City Championships and two Provincial Championships since 1984. This included this year’s Provincial Tier I Championship which they won by defeating theCardston Cougars 28-0. This is made all the more amazing in thatthe Cowboys organization also fields another bantam team thatwent on to win the Provincial Tier II Championship. A builder, aninnovator, and in 2012 a champion, it is our pleasure to presentthe Bantam Coach of the Year award to Al Cooper.Novice Coach of the YearDavid Holowaychuk –In 2008 David Holowaychuk was the starting wide receiver forthe University of Calgary Dinosaurs. Three seasons later he isthe head coach of the Calgary High School Division II ChampionBishop Grandin Ghosts. Quite a rise for a young man whosecoaching career is still in its infancy. David is credited with renewing the once proud Bishop Grandin program that had fallenon hard times in the last decade and creating a winning atmosphere where the Ghosts are now hungry to succeed on-field. Hisinstitution of an off-field work-out program and a spring camp, which Grandin hadn’t seen in years, has pumped new life intothe school. A quality young coach who is the perfect example ofwhy this award was created, David Holowaychuk is the 2011Novice Coach of the Year.High School Tier IV Coach of the YearKen Fournier – Drumheller High SchoolDrumheller is now known for more than fossils and bones andthe Valley of the Dinosaur now sports the most successful Tier IVteam in the Province. Not once, but twice have they battled theArdrossan Bisons in hard fought ASAA ProvincialTier IV finals in the Alberta Bowl and have come away bothtimes with victory, scoring a 41-34 overtime win in 2011 and a42-21 win in 2012. The architect of this rise to prominence is alocal boy returned home, having played for Drumheller as a highschool player and now as their head coach leading them to thetop of the heap. For this we are proud to award Ken Fournierwith the Tier IV Coach of the Year Award.6www.footballalberta.ab.ca2012 Football Alberta Coaching Awards

High School Tier III Coach of the YearRob McNab and Bruce O’Neil – Cochrane High SchoolThe Norman Kimball AwardDarcy Ogonoski – Austin O’Brien High SchoolThe most prolific coaching tandem in Alberta high school historyhas done it again. Not only did 2012 mark the 22 straight yearthe Cobras advanced to Provincials but it also marked the ninthtime these two have paired up to win an ASAA Provincial Championship. Winning two Tier II Championships in the 1990’s hasbeen followed by a remarkable seven Tier III titles in nine attempts in the new Millennium including last season’s thrilling 31-20 come from behind victory over St. Albert in the AlbertaBowl. A coaching pair for the ages and they’re not done yet. Fortheir great 2012 season we are very proud to present the Tier IIICoach of the Year Award to co-coaches Rob McNab and BruceO’Neil of the Cochrane Cobras. After years in the hunt the Crusaders finally kicked down thedoor and won their first ASAA Provincial Tier II Championship in2011. Not to let any time pass between the next one they repeated in 2012 with a dominant 44-3 win over the Catholic Central Cougars in the Tier II Championship game of the AlbertaBowl. Having taken over a program in the 1990’s that didn’teven have a senior team at the time and turning it into one ofthe most consistently excellent teams for close to two decadesthis award is well overdue and we are very proud to present theNorm Kimball Coach of the Year Award to Darcy Ogonoski.Laurie Robertson Tier II Coach of the YearKyle Sedgwick – Hunting Hills High School (Red Deer)A steady climb up the ladder to excellence has marked thelast few seasons since Kyle Sedgwick took over the HuntingHills program. Prior to his coming the Lightning were a perennial also-ran in Central Alberta, however in the four yearssince he became head coach the team has gone 34-6-1 andwon two Central Alberta League Championships, including2012, and went to provincials for the first time ever in 2010and went again this past season, advancing to the SemiFinals. A lot of tireless behind the scenes work is also thehallmark of Coach Sedgwick’s involvement with the Lightningand for that as well as his on-field excellence we are proudto present the Laurie Robertson Tier II Coach of the YearAward to Kyle Sedgwick.NEED RESOURCE MATERIALSFOR THE COACHING SEASON?If you missed out on coaching clinics or if you want to betteryour skills, visit the Resource Materials section on the FootballAlberta website http://footballalberta.ab.ca/web/resources/for a complete list of materials available through the office.Thank you to the Edmonton Eskimosand the Calgary StampedersFor their Continued Support of theSenior Bowl ProgramFrank Morris Tier I Coach of the Year AwardDavid Diluzio – Notre Dame High School (Calgary)It has been a long time since a juggernaut the levels to whichthe Notre Dame Pride reached this year has come along. Onehas to go back to the L.C.I Rams team of 1990, which only allowed a single point against all year, to find the kind of defensive dominance Notre Dame showed in 2012. After giving up apaltry 10 points in 11 games in the Calgary Division 1 leagueplay and playoffs they blasted into Provincials, winning bothgames handily. Their offense wasn’t too bad either averaging 45points per game, all against Top-10 teams, during their playoffand Provincial run culminating in a 37-8 win over Spruce Grovein the Alberta Bowl. For this we are proud to present their headcoach, David Diluzio, with the Frank Morris Tier I Coach of theYear Award.7www.footballalberta.ab.caFootball Alberta Coaching Awards cont’d.
