HIGHLIGHTSUnitarian Universalist Church of AnnapolisVolume 60, Issue 10Courage—Rev. Fred MuirI read and hear a lot about courage now days, such as this quote:When will people of courage stand up for what is right? Quotes of thissort are often about politics. A recent op-ed piece by four clergy spoketo this kind of courage too - they write about an issue that we as achurch have addressed. I urge you to read it.More recently, the displays of courage coming from Texas, Florida, the Caribbean nations and islands are quite stirring. Rescues of peopleand animals; acts of kindness and bravery; giving of donations andsupport to flood victims and first-responders - these reports have allbeen so moving. This month here at UUCA, our theme is courage and the aboveexamples give a place to start thinking about it. Of course, couragecomes in all shapes, sizes and contexts. So let me add to your reflectingabout this. I think of courage like this, as acting outside my comfortzone in order to usher in the Beloved Community (that time when wefinally realize the “inherent worth and dignity of all [with] justice, equity and compassion”). Of course the kinds of courage seen in thefirst two paragraphs are the kinds that make the headlines (on TV, inthe papers and social media). Then there are the small, everyday actsof courage that usually go unnoticed and unnamed. I would include inthis list attending church. That’s right, going to church can be an act of courage. For some, it’san act of courage because it might go against what has become anexpected practice, that is to stay home or go out but not to church - thenumber of people who go to church is decreasing, especially amongthose 40 years and younger. Telling someone that you go to churchinevitably leads to more questions that might make you feeluncomfortable. Combined with this - and I’ve found this is especiallytrue among Unitarian Universalists - coming to church can be a last-try-event, which is to say that communities of faith were a part of yourpast, but you come here to give it one more try.Going to a Unitarian Universalist church - that is, coming to UUCA is an act of courage not only because of what I’ve named above, butbecause just setting foot inside our doors is likely to be leaving thefamiliar, the expected, the what-you-thought-it-was-going-to-be(which might be good!). But, there’s more, in fact so much more.Coming to UUCA is a sign of hope, hope that there can be a path tosustained meaning. And it takes courage to want this, to believe it andthen become engaged in making hope a reality. Hope is a sign ofcourage, a badge of courage to wear. Here are some of the ways thatthis badge is acquired:October 2017In This Issue:Children’s Celebrationfor Rev. Fredp. 2From the Board.p. 3October Middle Hourp. 4RE Registrationp. 4Becoming Beloved Communityp. 5Upcoming Servicesp. 6October Eventsp. 7October Calendarp. 8Staff Contactsp. 10Next Highlights Deadline:October 15highlights@uuannapolis.org At UUCA, you are urged to holdup a mirror and ask: Is this me?Is this who I am, really? If “yes,”then wonderful, great, celebrate! And if not, what isstanding in the way ofbecoming your truer, authenticself. Here’s another way to thinkabout this: My experience hasbeen that everyone who comesthrough our doors wants to bemoved, to change - that couldhappen with music, withwords, or more likely withrelationships. If this wasn’t thecase, then you would just stayhome. Coming to church(con’t on p. 2)

At UUCA, you will be nudged to step away from the daily routinethat has been you - who others believe you to be - and set out onwhat feels like the risky business of becoming who you want tobe. Engaging in the unknown always takes courage, but here is acommunity you can walk with. Finally, in our faith community you will be asked to participate inshaping the Beloved Community. The larger community ofworth and dignity, justice and compassion - this is what we seek, what we want, this is what we show up to support. And this, ofcourse, does not - and shouldn't - have to be done alone. “It’sbetter together!” Every month, UUCA offers ways to address andengage the coming Beloved Community. It takes courage to showup, but you don’t have to be alone.Yes, we read a lot about courage. And, at UUCA we are acommunity that embraces courage and hope. Keep this mind as yougo about your weekly routines.See you church!FredCelebrating Rev. FROM THE BOARDOF TRUSTEES.Questions or comments for the Board?Contact Heather Millar, Board Secretaryat board@uuannapolis.org.A Saturday Filled with Governance Work—Dianne Moreau & Gina Williams’UUCA Board Trustees-at-LargeThe UUCA Governance Team, UUCA Board of Trustees, along with Rev. Fred Muir and Rev. JohnCrestwell, participated in a day-long workshop with UUA consultant, Rev. David Pyle, on August 26.Both groups will continue to work with him throughout the fall of 2017. Rev. Pyle will assess ourcurrent governance documents such as our Constitution, By-laws and Policies. His assessment, alongwith the in-depth research that is ongoing by the Governance Team, will provide us with guidance as weproceed with UUCA Governance review. At the workshop, Rev. Pyle discussed whether the congregation’s real-life experience was reflected inour governing documents. He also facilitated a conversation on three powerful questions related to thecongregation’s understanding of governance and Board practice. These questions addressed the historyof decision-making and power, the current practices of governance, and what ideal governance would beif it could be created. Rev. Pyle took copious notes on the participant’s responses and these will beadded into the documentation that will be studied. The Saturday workshop was a brief introduction to work he will be doing with us. It was thoughtprovoking and supportive of the work that is ahead for both the Governance Team and Board ofTrustees. The next Board of Trustees meeting is Monday, October 9, at 7:00 PM.To Access Board Documents Online:Visit www.uuannapolis.org/board-meeting-minutes, which is protected by apassword. How We Become a Beloved Community—Thornell JonesOur congregation is doing deep, reflective, soul-searching workaround how to make our community a more inclusive, multiculturalspace. Also, there are a lot of spiritual people - UU types - who do noteven know we exist. We need to welcome them to join us in this work.To keep them coming, we will have to improve our understanding ofhow to make our church more welcoming. We have many ways toparticipate in this spiritual growth. We can develop emotional and racial literacy and improve ourpersonal understanding and resiliency through the following:1. Emotional Literacy Training2. Building Beloved Community (BBC) discussions3. 8th Principle discussion sessionsWe, the member congregations of the Unitarian UniversalistAssociation, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying towardspiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multiculturalBeloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantleracism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.4. Here is anexample of the role greetersplay:My sister came to our churchin early July. She was greetedand given a good, friendlyreception .She later told me shereceived a lovely email thankingher for attending and offering toanswer any questions should shecome again. She enjoyed talkingto people over coffee after theservice. Her experience was sopositive that she decided to visitUU churches near her in upperMontgomery County. [That]experience was very different. She said no one spoke to her, greeted her, welcomed her, ormade her feel comfortableenough to stay for coffee later. We had just lost our mom theweek before and she did not feelcomfortable sharing this withthe congregation. She left. Hersearch continues and subsequentvisits to other locations havebeen better but I think she ismeasuring them all by the workthat each of you do every week.As Greeters the job we do canbe a very important one. A fewwords go a very long way andcan be the difference betweensomeone staying to learn moreabout us, or leaving promptlyand never coming back.[Jane Carrigan]Contact Linda White if you’dlike to be a Greeter!clindadance@yahoo.com5
