The Universityof Zaragoza inthe rankingsThe University of Zaragoza has consolidatedits position in international rankings and it isnow among the top 2% of the most prestigious universities worldwide. It is one of the10 best out of the 84 throughout Spain. Weare among the highest-rated 25 best worldwide in sports science (the first in Spain), amongthe top 100 in chemistry (also the first inSpain) and among the best 200 in ComputerScience (the fourth in Spain).10 -- 11

Strategicassociationswith otheruniversitiesThe G9 Group of Universities includes,besides the University of Zaragoza, theuniversities of Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha,Extremadura, the Balearic Islands, La Rioja,Oviedo, the Basque Country and the PublicUniversity of Navarre.Together with the Public University ofNavarre, the University of La Rioja andthe University of Lleida, the University ofZaragoza forms part of the Campus IberusConsortium, recognised as a Campus ofInternational Excellence. The most importantareas of focus of Campus Iberus are related tosustainable energy, health, food and nutritiontechnology, and the preservation of culturalheritage (EBRoS—European Bioregion ofScience—, with the universities of Pau andToulouse)12 -- 13

ResearchResearch, technological development andconstant innovation are essential for economicand social growth. Our research activityis channelled through the 222 researchgroups. At the University of Zaragoza, 2884researchers work in 170 research groups.University research institutes also providedoctoral, specialisation and postgraduateprogrammes based on their specialities. Theyare primarily interdisciplinary in structure andactivity. ScientificInfrastructuresThe University of Zaragoza also participates in four specialscientific and technical infrastructures: the LSC (CanfrancUnderground Laboratory), the LMA (Advanced MicroscopyLaboratory), the CIBER (Centre for Network BiomedicalResearch) and the RES (Spanish Supercomputing Network). Italso forms part of the LIFTEC (Research Laboratory for FluidDynamics and Combustion Technologies). The Centre forEncephaloparthy and Emerging Diseases is another scientificinfrastructure in which research of first level is developed.The University Library stocks over one million books andhouses the University’s bibliographic treasures (includingaround 254 incunables and over 400 manuscripts).16 -- 17

KnowledgeTransferAs knowledge transfer is the University of Zaragoza’sthird mission, we are committed to ‘open innovation’,a formula whereby companies associate with academicinstitutions to accelerate the innovation cycle.The University of Zaragoza is the fourth Spanishuniversity in patent royalties. Besides the CEMINEM,a joint research centre with companies, which has abusiness incubator (CEMINEM SPINUP), the Universityalso participates in the important action of creatingcompanies with other entities (MIE and EXPLORERprogrammes). To date, 53 spin-off and start-up companieshave been created. Zaragoza is the second Spanish publicuniversity by number of institutional and company chairs.The University has consolidated its position as aworldwide leader in innovation in the home appliancesector.18 -- 19

InternationalisationThe University of Zaragoza’s internationalcommitment is based on mobility programmesfor students and personnel, double-degreeprogrammes, bilateral and multilateralagreements, research projects and worldwideuniversity cooperation projects fordevelopment.The University of Zaragoza has almost 2000agreements with institutions from all over theworld. Over 1000 of our students participatein various exchange programmes annuallyand we welcome around 800 internationalexchange students every year and more thana thousand students of Spanish, comingtogether from more than 90 differentcountries. Around 120 members of our staff20 -go on educational visits to other countriesevery year.To support this internationalisation process,the University offers an increasing numberof courses in English, a linguistic supportprogramme for our personnel and an annualcall for internationalisation funding. Theinstitution also takes part in internationalforums and fairs and it is a member ofinternational higher education associations.The University of Zaragoza has ConfuciusInstitute in collaboration with the NanjingTech University and with the ConfuciusInstitute Headquarters (Hanban).- 21

UniversityCentre ofModernLanguagesThe University of Zaragoza was one of thefirst (1918) to teach modern languages. TheUniversity Centre of Modern Languagescurrently teaches 10 languages: Arabic,English, French, German, Italian, Japanese,Mandarin Chinese, Modern Greek, Portugueseand Russian.Spanish asa foreignlanguageand summercoursesThe University of Zaragoza was the firstSpanish university to teach Spanish as aforeign language (since 1927). We organisea wide range of Spanish courses for foreignstudents from all over the world.We also offer a variety of summer courses,many of them held in Jaca, but also inZaragoza and other places in Aragon.22 -- 23

Culturalactivity.ParaninfoBuildingThe University of Zaragozais heavily involved in culturalactivities on all its campuses.In Zaragoza, the ParaninfoBuilding (opened after itsrenovation in 2008) is thehome of the Rectorshipand one of the key placesin the city, due to the highnumber of activities heldthere (congresses, scientificmeetings, public lecturesand exhibitions). It is a Siteof Cultural Interest, whichaffords the building themaximum level of protectionfor artistic heritage existingin Spain.24 -It also contains the Museumof Natural Sciences of theUniversity of Zaragoza,opened in 2015. The museumhouses an importantpalaeontology collectionand it exhibits the collectiongathered together betweenthe late 19th century andearly 20th century by thescientist and natural historylecturer Longinos Navás.
