HONORSCRITERIASumma Cum Laude Graduation with Highest HonorsAC ADEMICDRESSAcademic dress was first used in Medieval universities in Europe, having evolvedfrom the attire of members of the monastic orders who were the chief scholarsof that time. Many varieties of gowns, headdress and hoods have been used,but beginning around 1895, colleges and universities in the U.S. developeda code that most institutions follow. Highest Honors are awarded to students with an average of at least 3.9on a 4.0 scale. This is equivalent to an “A” average. Blue and gold twisted cordsThe GownMagna Cum LaudeThe gown is black and white, traditionally of serge, worsted, poplin or silk, andoften made of modern fibers. Sleeves for the bachelor’s gown are pointed, forthe master’s closed with slits for the arms, and for the doctor’s round and open.The doctor’s gown has a velvet facing and three velvet bars on the sleeves,either black or the color stipulated for the degree held. Graduation with High Honors High Honors are awarded to students with an average of at least 3.6on a 4.0 scale. This is equivalent to an “A-” average or above. Blue cordsThe HoodCum LaudeThe hood originated from the tippet or shoulder covering worn by begging friars.The master’s hood is narrower and more pointed than the doctor’s hood. Hoodsare lined with the colors of the institution from which the degree was earnedand are edged with the velvet of a color designating the degree. Graduation with Honors Honors are awarded to students with an average of at least 3.3on a 4.0 scale. This is equivalent to a “B ” average or above. Gold cordsHONORSCOLLEGEMEDALLIONSThe CapThe cap most commonly worn is the black mortarboard. Doctor’s caps usuallyhave gold tassels. Others may have black or colored tassels, the latter indicatingthe field of study.The Honors College presents its graduating candidates with cast medallionsthat hang from gold ribbons and diplomas indicating the completion of all thehonors requirements of their baccalaureate colleges. These candidates, theHonors College dean and the directors of each college’s honors program arewearing their medallions in today’s ceremony. In order to qualify for graduationwith the Honors College diploma and medallion, each student must maintainat least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average, earn a substantial number ofcredits through designated honors courses, complete a thesis or researchproject and satisfy all the other requirements of his or her respectivecollege’s honors program.There are variations, both in hood and headdress, for the degrees earned inforeign countries. Some American universities also have distinguishing academicdress. Holders of doctoral degrees from The University of Toledo and membersof its Board of Trustees are entitled to wear the official University of Toledodoctoral costume, adopted by the Board of Trustees on June 11, 1968, at therequest of the Graduate Student Association and the graduate faculty.The University of Toledo doctoral costume is in the official colors of theUniversity. The robe is of navy blue faille, with black velvet panels and barsoutlined in gold. There is a choice of headgear – the mortarboard in blue orthe black velvet tam, each with a gold tassel.
