Honorary DegreesThe University of Iowa is pleased to makethe following awards in May 2017:The University of Iowa, with approvalof the Board of Regents, State of Iowa,confers Honorary Degrees to individualswho have demonstrated extraordinaryachievements in such areas as research,scholarship, education, artisticcreation, social activism, human rights,humanitarian outreach, or as recognizedby the faculty as being consistent with thevalues of higher education.Martín-José Sepúlveda –Honorary Doctor of ScienceTED WAITT – Honorary Doctorof Humane LettersThrough his visionary leadership overa three-decade career with the IBMCorporation, Dr. Martín-José Sepúlvedaestablished IBM as a health care innovatorin the U.S. private sector. He wasinstrumental in the development of a“well-being and total health management”framework—which recognizes theimportance of promoting physical, mental,emotional, and social health—that hassince become a model for other employersaround the globe. In 2009, IBM elevatedhim to the title of IBM Fellow, its mostprestigious technical honor, for “havingadvanced national priorities for healthcaredelivery reform, healthier people andhealthier workplaces.”A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Waittattended the Universities of Coloradoand Iowa. At 22, he co-founded Gateway2000, Inc., manufacturing custom builtcomputers for homes and businesses.After Gateway went public in 1993, Waittbecame the CEO of a Fortune 500 companyat the age 30. Under his direction, thecompany grew to employ over 20,000people worldwide, with 10,000 working inthe Midwest alone, and revenues totalingclose to 10 billion.Honorary degrees may be conferredat commencement ceremonies in theappropriate college or at Universityconvocations. Honorary degrees aretypically conferred only when thehonoree is present. On rare occasionsan honorary degree may be conferred inabsentia.The first honorary degree was awarded in1962; no honorary degrees were conferredfrom June 1, 1981 to 2007. He holds therank of Fellow in the American Collegeof Physicians, the American Collegeof Occupational and EnvironmentalMedicine, and the American College ofPreventive Medicine. He was elected tomembership in the Institute of Medicine(now the National Academy of Medicine)in 2014.After completing a fellowship ininternal medicine at the University ofIowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1984-85,Sepúlveda remained closely affiliatedwith the University of Iowa. He is acharter member of the College of PublicHealth’s Board of Advisors, and was afounding member of the External AdvisoryCommittee of the UI Health WorkforceCenter for Excellence, serving in that rolefrom 2006 until 2013. In 2003 he receivedthe university’s highest alumni honor,the Distinguished Alumni Award forAchievement; and in 2013 he receivedthe College of Public Health’s highesthonor, the Richard and Barbara HansenLeadership Award and DistinguishedLectureship.The University of Iowa wishes to recognizeMartín-José Sepúlveda for his contributionsin developing and promoting new thinkingand innovative business practices insupport of better health at the individual,family, corporate, and community levels.Since retiring from Gateway in 2004,Mr. Waitt has brought his signaturechange-making leadership to a rangeof social issues through high impact,breakthrough philanthropy. Hefounded the Waitt Foundation, TheWaitt Institute for Violence Prevention,and The Waitt Institute to advance hisvisionary philanthropic goals. The WaittFoundation, a grant making organization,has invested over 60 million in variousocean conservation initiatives principallythrough the National GeographicSociety. The Foundation also providedthe financial support for the creation ofthe Waitt Advanced Biophotonics Centerat the renowned Salk Institute. TheWaitt Institute for Violence Prevention iscommitted to breaking the cycle of violencein our homes, schools, and communitiesat a local and national level. Establishedmore recently, the Waitt Institute, anoperating organization, is committed tohelping small coastal communities developand implement comprehensive, sciencebased, community-driven solutions forsustainable ocean management.Mr. Waitt was elected Chair of the SalkInstitute’s Board of Trustees in 2016,after serving as a Trustee for more than adecade. He is a member of the ExecutiveCommittee of the Board of Trustees of theNational Geographic Society (NGS), and isthe largest living individual donor to theNGS.The University of Iowa wishes torecognize Ted Waitt for his extraordinarycontributions as an entrepreneur and forhis visionary philanthropy.9
