THE INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM AT USIThrough classroom instruction and cultural programming, the IntensiveEnglish Program (IEP) at the University of Southern Indiana helps nonnative speakers of English develop the skills to succeed in universityacademic programs. Students in the IEP are integrated into the academic,social and cultural life of the University with opportunities to interactwith other USI students in residence halls, dining facilities, studentorganizations and campus events. The Center for International Programsand Services (CIP) assists internationaland American students in a variety of waysrelated to the international dimensionof their education. This is not a home stay program.International Outreach ProgramThe International Outreach Program provides international studentswith the opportunity to share their culture and language with Americancommunity groups, school children and area businesspersons.Small World ProgramSmall World is a program that pairs American students with internationalstudents to broaden their horizons by spending time together sociallyand learning more about each other's culture. The program is a bridgebetween cultures, and quite often long-lasting friendships developbetween partners.International ConnectionsInternational Connections is an orientation program to help newinternational students with their initial adjustment to campus and thesurrounding area. Center for International Programs staff meet studentsupon their arrival in Evansville. All new international students are requiredto participate in this comprehensive orientation and registration programduring the week prior to fall and spring semesters. Activities include manyopportunities to meet other students.Additional OpportunitiesMany international programs, such as International Week festivities,are sponsored in cooperation with the International Club and othercampus organizations. The Global Community's monthly cultural andsocial events are open to the entire campus community. The Center forInternational Programs also organizes trips to places of interest in theregion such as Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri.18

Length ofstudy is flexible, ranging from a few weeks to awhole year. USI is a member of the InternationalStudent Exchange Program (ISEP), which linksthe University to a worldwide network of studyabroad opportunities, all at USI tuition rates.In many instances, scholarships and other formsof financial aid can go toward study abroadcosts. SERVICE LEARNINGThe USI Service Learning Program enablesyou to engage in community-based serviceexperiences that are integrated into theacademic curriculum. Each semester,approximately 78 different service learningcourses are offered that represent avariety of academic disciplines. As aneducation student, you’ll tutor at localschools; nursing and health professionsstudents provide care at free health clinics;communication studies majors participatein literacy programs with the Boys andGirls Club; and criminal justice studentswork with at-risk youth. HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFEUSI campus housing is divided into two options—residence halls andapartment suites. Take advantage of our affordable, modern residentialfacilities. Four residence halls—Newman Hall, Governors Hall, O’BannonHall and Ruston Hall—offer incoming freshmen a traditional campus livingenvironment. Ruston Hall and O’Bannon Hall house USI’s eight LivingLearning Communities exclusively for first-year students. Campus apartmenthousing facilities include the Joseph E. O’Daniel Apartments and the FrankF. McDonald Apartments. At the heart of the campus apartment area is theResidence Life Community Center, a state-of-the-art building with a largeshared living room, an expanded convenience store with pizza delivery,wireless internet and a laundry room.LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIESAt USI, we believe that students who have similarinterests, goals and academic programs can benefitfrom living on designated floors within housing.We call them Living Learning Communities (LLCs).They help create a strong link between your life in andout of your classroom learning experience. CLUB SPORTSWELCOME TO EVANSVILLESo you want to play sports at a higher level than intramural, but not quite at the NCAAdivision level? Then club sports are for you. USI club teams play against teams fromother colleges and universities in sports that include rugby, soccer, ultimate frisbee,wrestling and quidditch.Evansville is the third largest city in Indiana. USI’s suburban location in the rollinghills of western Evansville is just minutes away from all that Evansville has to offer.Students can take in a hockey game, traveling Broadway show or concert at the FordCenter, a 10,000-seat downtown arena. For a relaxing walk, bike ride or invigoratingrun, the downtown riverfront features a greenway with a view of changing rivertraffic and the Evansville skyline. Evansville’s historic district showcases a varietyof architecture and a vibrant arts district. Movie theatres (including an IMAX) andSwonder Ice Arena draw students together for fun, activity and fellowship. Evansville’srestaurants, coffee shops, museums and shopping areas also are places wherestudents like to spend time.INTRAMURAL SPORTSRECREATION, FITNESS AND WELLNESSStaying active is a concept that brings many students together on campus, whether it’sa pick-up game of basketball, group exercise class or intramural activity.
