History and concept of the new library project NLL was established on 29 August 1919 First discussions on a new NLL buildingbegan in 1926-1928 and continuedbefore and after the Second World War In 1988 project was commenced In 1989 Latvian-born American architectGunnar Birkerts was invited to becomean author for the project UNESCO support was gained already inthe late 1990s Construction works began only in 2008 NLL opened its doors for the public on12 June 2014 Official inauguration ceremony on 29August 2014

Main facts: 1000 reading places Possibility to serve over 3000 visitors aday 350 000 publications on open shelves Staff: 390 (including approx. 160professionals who are serving readers) Library is open seven days a week 14 Levels (including basement andMezzanine Level) Library accessibility: all services areavailable for people with limited mobility,there are specially equipped workstations for visually impaired customers

Building’s length, width, height:170 m, 44 m, 68 m Overall area: 42 733 m2 Built up area: 17 431 m2 Cubic capacity: 263 000 m3 Construction: monolithic reinforcedconcrete building, covered with glasspanels and stainless steel sheets Interior finish materials: glass, naturalstone, stainless steel, natural wood, softfloor covering in the Reading Roomsand Staff Offices All wooden furniture is made in Latvia;wall panels are made of birch tree,floors are made of Canadian maple Drinking Fountains: available on allfloors (filtered drinking water) Air change rate: twice an hour

Building Management System Structures and facades of the NLLbuilding are designed consideringoptimal heat transmission Maximum reduction in consumption ofenergy resources necessary formaintenance of indoor climate Fresh air by 20 air processing devicesare installed in the building of the NLL,which automatically regulate the amountof outdoor air depending on theconcentration of respiratory gases Supply of fresh air in the building isdivided into zones

Infrastructure building

In order to provide thermal energy to thebuilding, a heating unit consisting of 12heat supply circuits The control system regulates the supplytemperature of each circuit dependingon desired and outdoor air temperaturesettings In order to provide the main buildingwith cooling (and not only), a technicalbuilding is constructed, where thenecessary cooling capacity is ensuredby chillers The lighting control in the public part ofthe building is ensured centrally fromthe control system of the building andaccording to a time schedule Sensors are installed for savingelectricity in the Staff Area

Current situation and future plans BMS was adjusted to control lights,air-conditioning and ventilation incertain areas Personnel elevators Computers in the Reading Rooms wereoperating all the time Paper-recycling boxes Place to install solar panels Eco-friendly cleaning liquids Work with community - different eventsfor various target audiences
