As a rule the examinations began at or about 9:30 in themorning and concluded around 3or 4 in the afternoon, the mentaking lunch at the examinationplaces or going without.Colonel Broadber.t conductedthe examination of staff officers inLihue, and Major Rice looked after the officers of the first battalion at the county building Lt. Colonel Tinimons took the officers ofthe two companies at Kealia andMajor McBrvde the officers a tHomestead and Eleele. Major Baldwin "put through" the officersof Makaweli and Waimea. The examination paoers camein big. sealed envelopes from headquarters at Honolulu and were notopened until work was underway. These papers were hard or easyaccording to the number of evenings the officer had put in in studying tactics. Inasmuch as the localregiment is new. however, andthe work is not very well advanced some of the officers seemed tofeel that the examination was rather stiff for one day, or onesitling.vfhe examination papers will"not be passed upon here, but willbe forwarded to the board at Ho-nolulu.Presumably any officer failingto make the required 75 per centwill take' another examination later on. The department was veryanxious that all of the officers"take a stab" at it now, even ifthey iailed; on account of the desirability of having all the companies officered by duly commissioned men at the first of July, when the new army bill goes intoeffect if that were possible.New Drill SergeantSergeant Gibson, 2nd. Infantry,U. S. A., arrived at Lihue Wednesday morning and reported toColonel Broadbent. He will become di ill instructor of the menof the Fourth Infantry. SergeantGibson has been in the militaryservice fourteen years. He camefronis El Paso, Texas, to FortShafter, at Honolulu, only lastNovember, so is comparativelynew in the Islands. He has already entered actively upon hisLibrary rooms, and was quite upto the high level of that organization in interest and ability. Thesecretory, Miss Elsie Wilcox, readan interesting interview of Cel.de la Vergne, reported by Mr.Lydgate, descrptive of his firstvisit to Kauai in 1872, and detailing in a pleasant way the conditions of life and society in thoseold davs. The tribute to the climatein his opinion, without exception the finest in the world, deserves to be set in gold by theHawaii Promotion Committee.Mr. Lydgate read a paper onthe Mahaulepu Hut, which toldthe story of that Hawaiian syndicate, and set forth in a clear lightthe strange point of view, andsome other peculiar practices ofthe Hawaiian Hui. It was an interesting contribution to the history of that strange and anomalous creation, the Hawaiian Hui.Mr. W. Hyde Rice submittedan interesting legend of a sacredspear point, in the hands of afamous ancient chief, who accomplished great things with it, in asort of Don Quixote tour of theIslauds.lt was a legendary tale ofrather novel relations.Mr. S. W. Wilcox gave severalvery interesting, and graphic incidents from his experiences assheriff of the island, relative mainly to buried treasure, and the theftof the same. From his account itwould seem that a great deal morehas been buried than has ever beensatisfactorily accounted for, andthat there ought to be large, ifsomewhat vague, possibilities oftreasure trove for the men withthe right kind of insight and theproper touch. Mr. Wilcox cappedthe climax of his spell as a raccon- teur by his tale 'Who stole Lima- loa's Awa?" a stirring story of adventure and detective interest. The treasurer's report showeda balance in the treasury of gl9.The same officers wereviz: Win.
