THE ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL SURVIVAL GUIDELETTER FROM YOUR PRESIDENTON BEHALF OF AIAS UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO, WELCOME!The American Institute of Architecture Students is aninternational organization whose mission is to advanceleadership, design, and service among architecturestudents to empower voices, ideas, and actions for thefuture. Our chapter at the University at Buffalo strivesto focus on supporting our fellow students with the skillsto live a healthy lifestyle and learn work-life balance. The University at Buffalo AIAS chapter has helpedme grow in terms of leadership and also introducedme to the many professionals in and out of Buffalo. Ihave been able to attend workshops such as ResumeBuilding, firm and site tours, and have even traveledwith our members to Seattle, Washington for FORUM.Every year, we aim to grow our student body closerwith one another and to spread mental healthawareness. Without you, AIAS would have no reasonto exist. On that note, there are a few things I feel areimportant to mention to prepare you for what it is youare about to experience:1. Remember that you come first. Your mind, body, andwell-being are important. You have to have a properfundamental structure to design. If the gym is not your thing, unroll a yoga mat andstretch a little or grab a buddy and go for a walk.Remember to eat healthily and drink lots of water. If you are seeking support, feel free to talk to yourprofessors or go to one of our on-campus resources. Ihave used them and they make a huge difference. Noone is here to judge you so do not feel weird.2. Time management is key. Create a schedule andstick to it. Times are going to get rough and you mayfeel overwhelmed but having a game plan will makeyou organized.73. Save, save, save! Quicksave your work as oftenas you can. Better to save way too many times thanto lose your work. Trust me, I have been there and itblows.Use UB Box whenever possible. You can download itdirectly to your computer for an easy save to the BOXand sharing files is simple, too. Plus, you can log into itfrom any device and always have your work around.4. Be aware of your surroundings. Remember to lockthe doors of your studios and the buildings, have abuddy system (esp. when it is dark), and if you haveto walk alone, keep your senses available aka unplugheadphones. Our UB PD try very hard to keep you andyour belongings safe but they cannot be everywhereat once. If you live off-campus, remember to close yourwindows and lock your doors.UBPD-716-645-22225. Enjoy the little things. The walk to studio may seemlike a drag, but when it snows, look at how the snowglistens. If there are flowers out, take in the colors ofthe leaves and grass. No matter how stressful timesmay be, there is always a bright side. Now with that being said, we would like to welcomeyou to the University at Buffalo, School of Architectureand Planning. Get to know your studio mates becauseyou are stuck with them for the next 4 years (and youwill make the most amazing memories with them!) Wewish you all the best and know that AIAS is alwayshere to help and support you all. Come join us at ourevents and keep an eye out on your emails, we sendout emails frequently.Good Luck!P.S. Buffalo always has some of the most beautifulsunsets.

THE ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL SURVIVAL GUIDEAUTODESK: REVIT, AUTOCAD, 3DS MAXRevit is a tool used for architecturaldesign and documentation. It is setupto support BIM (Building InformationModeling) workflows.AutoCAD, on the other hand, is essentiallya drafting application, used by draftersto prepare sets of technical drawings.3DS Max is Autodesk’s professional 3danimation software. It has detailedmodeling capabilities that can beutilized for architectural visualizations.RHINOCEROS 3D, GRASSHOPPER, VRAYRhino is a 3D-modeling software, andis an irreplaceable part of architects’workflows. The program allows you toattempt multiple iterations of your design, whether you are making decisions aboutform, or resolving structural issues.MODELING PRO TIPS Know what software is most usefulin which phase of a project. Forinstance, Revit and AutoCAD are bettersuited for design development andproduction than for pre-design.Plugins like Grasshopper (a visualprogramming language) and V-Ray (amulti-use rendering software) will allowyou to customize your Rhino workspaceand expand your workflow beyondaverage modeling techniques.SKETCHUP, ARCHICAD, VECTORWORKSSketchup is a great modeling platformfor initial concept modeling as well asquick visualizations.ArchiCAD, on the other hand, is a BIM(Building Information Modeling) softwarethat can be utilized for all aspects ofbuilding design and engineering.Vectorworks also provides a BIM platformthat is useful for flexible form-making.26

DIGITALARCHITECTURETOOLSRHINO PRO TIPS Remember that you are not alone!Use online forums such as McNeel toget help from other more experiencedusers. You will often find that manyothers have gone through the sameissues as you and have already figuredout how to resolve them.Make an effort to understand howthe software thinks. The sooner youunderstand what a NURBS surface is,the better.ADOBE PRO TIPS AND HOW TOUSE THEMTHE ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL SURVIVAL GUIDECombine multiple Adobe applicationsto achieve a truly well-developedresult!Use your student discounts! Mostsoftware providers offer discountedrates for purchasing software if youuse your school email to create anaccount. And AIAS members get evenmore discounts!Manage your layers. While it mayseem tedious to keep creating newlayers, and switching back and forthbetween them, a properly organizedfile makes things a lot easier for you(and any group members) in the longrun. (This applies to programs likeRhinoceros 3D and AutoCAD as well.)27ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE offers a greatrange of tools for not only architects, but a variety of design professionals.Of these, the three programs that areessential to architects’ workflows arePhotoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Adobe Photoshop is among themost-commonly used digital toolsin a designer’s arsenal. It is a greatphoto editor, allowing the user toapply and edit filters and masks tobring raster images to life. Adobe Illustrator is a great tool forworking with vector graphics. Itsuse is pretty flexible, ranging fromrefining line weights to creatinglogos and diagrams. Adobe InDesign is used for publishingdesign, proving beneficial in creatingposters, flyers, brochures and thelike. As a design student, you willfind the tool extremely valuable inlaying out presentations and finalreview boards.

This stuff candry fast so keep the cap on the bottle anduse it gently on a modelAND HOW TOUSE THEMPAINTERS TAPE:Good for taping together models whilethey dry- just be careful- it might rip!EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE:It is important to save your files in multiple locations! Save a copy of a file on yourcomputer, a google drive, and an externalhard drive. Take the few minutes to saveit rather than the hours of frustration ifyou lose the drawing!External hard drives come in various sizes and capacities, with the largest holding up to 4 TB! Be sure to think aboutyour average file sizes when investing.28

Don’t forget to sharpen thelead often and twist the pencil as you goalong!LEAD REFILLS:When your lead runs out, just grab another piece and refill it. Lead comes indifferent thicknesses from 6H being verysharp and light, and 6B being very darkand thick.DRAFTING TAPE / DRAFTING DOTS:Use these to secure a drawing to yourdrafting board, other tape will rip yourpaperSCALE:Architecture scales are different thanengineering scales, make sure you knowwhich one you are using before you use iton a drawing!KNEADED ERASER:Used to gently erase or lighten pencilmarks on a drawing. When it gets dirty, just play around with the eraser andtwist it around to get a clean side ready.29
