There is a treasure each of us can havethat is greater than you can imagine. This treasure is worth more than anyitem we can own. This treasure cannot be bought withmoney, and it cannot break or bestolen. This treasure is so precious that manypeople are willing to give up everythingthey own to have it.

Some are even willing to give up theirlives for it.

To find out what this great treasure is,we’re going on a treasure hunt. Hidden in the room is a treasure. Quietly, search for the treasure.

Open it up and read the message insideout loud. Let’s all say these words together. This represents the teaching of JesusChrist. The teachings of Jesus Christ are a greattreasure to us.

Why are the teachings of Jesus Christ agreat treasure to us?

The teachings of Jesus Christ are atreasure to us because they show ushow to be happy by following HeavenlyFather and Jesus.

Let’s read the first part of Doctrineand Covenants 19:23. 23 Learn of me, and listen to mywords; . . .

Jesus Christ said this. He wants us to learn about him and histeachings.

What do you think is happening in thispicture?

When the Savior was on the earth, he wentfrom town to town teaching the people howthey should live so that they could be happyand someday return to live with HeavenlyFather.

Many people loved to hear his teachingsand followed him wherever he went.Sometimes thousands of people wouldgather around him to listen and learn.

How do you think the people felt as theylistened to Jesus?

Sometimes Jesus’ disciples (helpers) triedto send the people away because Jesuswas tired and needed to rest.

Jesus always told them to let the peoplestay to hear his teachings.

He wanted all the people to hear andlearn so that they could have joy andhappiness that would last forever.

We can learn manyof the teachings ofJesus from thescriptures.

Some of the thingsJesus taught while hewas on the earth arewritten in the NewTestament.

When Jesus was on the earth he taughtmany things by example. He wants us to follow his example anddo what he did.

Here’s how to play: You will here a description of somethingin the life of Jesus Christ.

Here’s how to play: Next you will be asked some questionsabout this description.

Here’s how to play: You must raise your hand, then give thecorrect answer.

1. I’m thinking of a time when Jesusstood in the river Jordan with John theBaptist (see Matthew 3:13–15).

What happened to Jesus in the riverJordan?

How was Jesus baptized?

How have we been taught to bebaptized?

2. I’m thinking of someone very specialwho was there when John the Baptistbaptized Jesus. He could not be seen byeveryone, but Jesus and John knew hewas there (see Matthew 3:16).

Who am I thinking of?

What have we been taught to do toreceive the gift of the Holy Ghost?

3. I’m thinking of a time when Jesus waswithout food for forty days and fortynights (see Matthew 4:1–11).

Who tried to tempt Jesus?

What did Jesus do?

What have we been taught to do whenwe are tempted?

I’m thinking of the time Jesus’ disciplestried to send the children away (seeMark 10:13–16).

What did Jesus tell his disciples?

Whom does Jesus love?

Why does Jesus teach us?

5. I’m thinking of times when Jesustaught the people how to pray (seeMatthew 6:9 and 3 Nephi 18:19).

Whom did Jesus teach us to pray to?

How did Jesus teach us to end ourprayers?

When should we pray?

We can learn many of the teachings ofJesus Christ by reading the scriptures, but the scriptures do not contain all theteachings of Jesus.

Jesus did not stop teaching when he leftthe earth.

Now he teaches us through prophets.

Jesus speaks to his prophet and tellshim what we need to know.

The prophet then gives Jesus’ teachingsto us.

Joseph Smith wasprepared byHeavenly Father tobe a prophet andteach the truth.

Heavenly Fatherand Jesus appearedto Joseph and toldhim that none ofthe churches on theearth at that timewas true.

Later, Josephhelped Jesus bringback the truechurch.

What is the nameof the true churchof Jesus Christtoday?

What is the nameof the true churchof Jesus Christtoday? The Church of JesusChrist of Latter-daySaints.

Let’s all say thisname together. The Church of JesusChrist of Latter-daySaints.

Who is this?

Joseph Smith became the first prophet of TheChurch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He helped the early members of the Churchknow what Jesus wanted them to do.

Who is this?

Who is this?

Jesus Christ speaks to the living prophetjust as he spoke to Joseph Smith.

When we hear the words of the prophet,we are hearing the teachings of Jesus.

It is wonderful to have a living Prophet onEarth today who can give us the Savior’steachings.

Sometimes we may forget howwonderful it is to be a member of theChurch and have the Savior’s teachings. We need to remember what a greattreasure the teachings of Jesus are.

Let’s listen to the following story aboutAlette.

Alette had talked with the missionariesand knew that they taught theteachings of Jesus Christ. She wanted tobecome a member of The Church ofJesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but herfather didn’t want her to be baptized. He didn’t understand how much itmeant to Alette to learn the teachingsof Jesus and become a member ofJesus’ church.

He asked her to wait. Alette waited, butshe continued to go to church and keptpraying that one day her father wouldunderstand how much becoming amember of the Church meant to her.

At Christmastime, Alette’s father askedher what she wanted for Christmas. Shetold him that the only thing she wantedwas his permission for her to bebaptized. Her father decided that ifbaptism was that important to Alette hewould give his permission. Alette wasbaptized on Christmas Eve. This was theonly gift that she received, but it was agreat treasure that brought her muchjoy.

What gift did Alette want?

Why was this gift so important?

We can be be grateful for the teachingsof Jesus Christ.

We can be grateful that— We can receive the gift of the HolyGhost after we are baptized.

We can be grateful that— We can pray when we need help.
