Important notesTop plate selection notes:Important application notes: For the Fontaine Top Plate selection guide see page5. Air activated release styles are available on theNo-Slack 6000, 7000, 7000CC series top plates. If any single restriction factor within your applicationis surpassed within a given duty level, the next dutylevel must be selected.Mount selection notes: See page 6 when choosing a Fontaine sliding mount orstationary mount for your top plate and application.– Stationary mount fifth wheels (plate or angle mounts)are an option and ideal for applications where thetrailer kingpin position, kingpin weight, axle loadingand vehicle length are constant or consistent whenloaded. Stationary mount fifth wheels are usuallylighter than sliding mount fifth wheels.– A sliding mount gives the owner more options. Youcan transfer weight between tractor axles, handletrailers with different kingpin settings, and varyvehicle combination lengths. A sliding mount fifthwheel also provides additional maneuverability, accommodates trailers with short landing gearclearance and allows the driver to extend the unitfor maximum comfort when weight allows. If youchoose a sliding mount, Fontaine offers a wideselection of slide lengths in both air activated andmanual release styles. Air release is recommendedfor applications that require frequent adjustment. The flexibility of sliding mount fifth wheels shouldincrease the resale value of your truck. For more information on standard, moderate, heavy andsevere duty, please review the duty class restrictionson page 4. When selecting a fifth wheel, if the application orvehicle usage places the maximum capacity on acertain fifth wheel, then the selection of a fifth wheelwith a higher capacity is advised. For example, a tractorthat is at a maximum vertical load of 50,000 lbs in amoderate duty application should be using a fifth wheelwith a vertical load capacity of 55,000 lbs or greater. This additional capacity should give better service lifeover a longer period of time.Special applications: All logging, mining and oil field applications areconsidered severe duty. Do not select assembliesin the standard, moderate or heavy levels when aspecial application is designated.!!!Minimum static load warning: Minimum static load warning!!! The trailer that isattached to the fifth wheel should impose a consistentvertical load. Repeated negative loading (trying to pullthe fifth wheel off of the brackets with the kingpin) isnot allowed. A minimum static load applied to the fifthwheel through the trailer is 10% of the gross trailerweight. See the load rating for the specific fifth wheelfor maximum vertical load values.Important: Contact your OEM or Fontaine Fifth Wheel for more information on the right fifth wheel for yourapplication. Please refer to the Fontaine Fifth Wheel warranty statement for important warranty information.Selecting assemblies in conflict with this application guide without prior written approval from Fontaineengineering voids all warranties.800-874-97803

Duty Class RestrictionsWith the Fontaine Fifth Wheel complete productline you can easily select the perfect fifth wheel foryour application. We offer top plates and mountingoptions in a wide variety of sizes to handle even themost demanding applications.Weight:To specify the right fifth wheel for your applicationtwo factors must be considered: load capacity andservice conditions.Travel type:Axlelimitation:“Weight” refers to the amount of weight that afifth wheel can handle. “Road type” refers to theoperating environment and the type of equipmentused in an application. “Travel type” refers tomileage between stops.Standard DutyRoad type:Less than 95,000 lbs (43,000 kgs) grosscombination weight (GCW)100% on-highway application onmaintained concrete or asphalt roadsMore than 30 miles between each coupleMaximum number of towed axles equals 3Moderate DutyWeight:You don’t choose a top plate based on “weight”only. Consider service conditions because a heavyload pulled on a paved road places less stress ona fifth wheel than a lighter load pulled in severe offhighway conditions. See application charts (pages7-10).The duty class restriction chart, top plate styleschart (page 5), and mounting options chart (page 6)can be used as a guide to help you select the rightfifth wheel. If you need further assistance contact Fontaine FifthWheel at: 800-874-9780.Road type:Travel type:Axlelimitation:Less than 115,000 lbs (52,000 kgs) grosscombination weight (GCW)Less than 10% off-highway application onmaintained concrete, asphalt, gravel orcrushed rock roadsNo minimum mileage between couplesMaximum number of towed axles equals 4Heavy DutyWeight:Road type:Travel type:Axlelimitation:Less than 140,000 lbs. Helpful InformationWhat is the warranty coverage?Fontaine’s warranty is for five years covering parts for materialand workmanship. There are a few exceptions. See our existingwarranty statement or call us at 800-874-9780 for moreinformation. Warranty document is at www.fifthwheel.com(Choose "Support" and then "Warranty). What is the recommended maintenance procedure?Recommended maintenance is at least every 90 days or50,000 miles. All recommended practices are located in theFifth Wheel Handbook supplied with every unit shipped or maybe obtained at www.fifthwheel.com (Choose "Support" andthen "Helpful information" LT-001 Instruction Handbook). What if my fifth wheel is hard to open?Make sure a pre-service lubrication has been completedbefore unit is put in service. Make sure the driver is backingtight against the trailer after setting the trailer brakes. This willreduce any tension or pressure on the locking jaw and wedge.DO NOT dump chassis air bags before uncoupling fromtrailer. Make sure the wedge-stop rod is properly set to therecommended gap. Make sure the truck and trailer are notin a bind or twist (No daylight between top plate and trailerplate). Check for any lower mount obstructions or interferenceunderneath the wheel. Check for damage to the fifth wheel. Can I change the height of my fifth wheel?Changing fifth wheel height can be as simple as changingthe brackets. It all depends on the type of application, styleof fifth wheel and the type of existing base. These factors willdetermine just how high or low you can go.How can I tell if my fifth wheel is properly locked?Verify secure coupling with a “tug test”, by easingthe tractor forward, with the trailer brakes on, to feelresistance of the load. Set the parking brakes onthe tractor and trailer and get out of the tractor andvisually inspect, using a flashlight, that the fifth wheelis properly closed.IMPORTANT: Improperly coupled fifth wheel mayin some circumstances be able to pass a “tugtest”. A visual inspection is always required. The locking jaw and wedge must be fully acrossthe throat of the fifth wheel, there must be nogap between the fifth wheel and the trailer plate, and the pull handle must be within 1” or lessfrom the skirt of the fifth wheel. All three areasof the fifth wheel must be inspected to ensurethat the fifth wheel is properly coupled.Below are three critical areas of visualinspection that drivers must perform after everycouple.Locking jawKingpinand wedgemust be fullyWedgeacross thethroat of theFifth wheel throatfifth wheel. How much wear is allowed for a kingpin?According to SAE J2228 - Kingpin Wear Limits, if the uppershoulder which is 2.875" new or the smaller 2" diameter isworn more than .125 (1/8)" the kingpin should be replaced.Does Fontaine provide a kingpin tool?Yes! Go to "www.fifthwheel.com/wtb" to find out where youcan purchase the No-Slack test kingpin tool near you (partnumber KITKPT).No gapbetweentrailerbottom andfifth wheel.Pull handle1" SkirtNo-Slack test kingpinKITKPTGap betweenpull handleand skirt ofwheel lessthan 1”.If the visual inspection indicates that you failedto obtain a proper couple, open the fifth wheel, inspect for damaged components, and repeatthe coupling sequence.Get the app @ FifthWheel.com/appwww.fifthwheel.com 800-874-9780 Email: parts@fifthwheel.com 2020 Fontaine Fifth Wheel LT-076 September 2021 R11FontaineFifthWheel@FifthWheelParts

certain fifth wheel, then the selection of a fifth wheel with a higher capacity is advised. For example, a tractor that is at a maximum vertical load of 50,000 lbs in a moderate duty application should be using a fifth wheel with a vertical load capacity of 55,000 lbs or greater. This additional capacity should give better service life
