Highway Construction Inspector Apprentice Program – Job BookTable of ContentsPrefaceWithout any prior construction-related experience and courses, most apprentices shouldbe able to finish the Highway Construction Inspector Apprentice Program (CIAP) within therequired 4000 on-the-job training hours. Some may complete the program in less time if theyhave verifable construction experience. We will make every effort to afford as manyopportunities as possible within the constraints of travel and workload to each apprentice, however, each apprentice is ultimately responsible for their progress. This Job Book contains the behavioral or attitudinal characteristics and job elements thateach CIAP participant in the Commonwealth must master in order to advance to the next level inthe Construction Inspector position series. The Job Book serves as the documentation inmeasuring progress through the CIAP. The “Job Book” follows the basic format of VDOT’SRoad and Bridge Specifications (RBS).In addition, it includes the specification-based questions of the Construction QualityImprovement Program (CQIP). These questions are essential to construction inspection staff inthe performance of project-related responsibilities. They are used to determine the overallcompliance of a project with the RBS. A critical reference for the apprentices is the ConstructionManual. Each Apprentice will find that reading a specific section of the Construction Manualbefore attempting the related set of job elements in the “Job Book” will enhance success. TheConstruction Manual provides essential information in easy-to-read language. Each apprentice will work as a team with other construction inspection staff and theproject engineers in the completion and signoff of the job elements. For each set of job elements, both the apprentice and the monitoring inspector will describe in general, narrative form how, when, and where (project # or name) the job elements were mastered. The monitoring inspectorwill also note areas in which the apprentice possesses strengths and those areas in need of morepractice or review.iiiTable of Contents9/8/2021
