GOAL #1: INCREASE STUDENT SUCCESSAND SUPPORTTo remain one of the top schools of optometry inthe nation, we must recruit the strongest studentsand continue giving them access to advancedthinking and practices in vision science andpatient care. This is an opportune time for younger doctors, as manyexperienced optometrists are eager to sell their practicesto those just entering the workforce. When you givetoward student scholarships, you directly support thisnew generation of professionals, empowering them topromote good vision and advance eye health intheir communities.Your investment in scholarships helps not only thesefuture optometrists, but also the countless lives they willtouch over the course of their careers.IT STARTSWITH YOUSCHOLARSHIPS CREATE A LEGACY OF CAREGIVERSInspired by his father, mother, and more than 15 ofhis family members, Nathan Morrow, our recent classpresident, came to IU. While studying, he came tounderstand the optometrist’s primary role: to provideexcellent patient care, whether it’s within Indiana’scommunities or outside its borders.FOR ALL WHOINVEST INTOMORROW’SLEADERSScholarships allow someof the best and brighteststudents to attend IU, toenter the workforce withless debt, and to give backto communities in need.“I was fortunate to have such agreat role model in my dad. He’sinstilled in me the importance ofhard work and dedication to thefield of optometry. After graduation,I hope to move the professionforward the way my dad has.” —Nathan Morrow, O.D. ’17Morrow is just one of the many students who will go onto provide world-class eye care within their communities. And with your support, we can create a scholarship thatoffers even more aspiring optometrists opportunity andinspiration—a chance to join a legacy of professionals whoeffect positive change, every day.Nathan Morrow, O.D. ’17, and his father, Doug Morrow,O.D. ’77, cheer on the Hoosiers at a recent IU football game.

GOAL #2: CREATE INNOVATIONS THATCHANGE THE WAY WE LIVEThe success of our school relies heavily onour exceptional faculty members—thoseat the heart of excellent clinical trainingand cutting-edge investigation. Theseimpassioned clinicians, researchers, andinstructors not only shape the minds of futurecare providers, but also create advances inpatient care through their research. In a competitive market, endowed faculty positions arethe most powerful tool we have to attract and retainvisionary faculty who will mentor our students andcreate new knowledge. We are currently seeking to createtwo endowed faculty positions—one in visual opticsand another in vision translational research. With yoursupport, we can ensure that the premier minds in visionscience make the IU School of Optometry their home.IT STARTSWITH YOUEndowed facultypositions attractexceptional professors, clinicians, and researcherswho go on toshape the future ofvision science.A RICH HISTORY OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHWe are a leader in research on such topics as retinalimaging, amblyopia in infants and children, glaucoma, visual fields, low vision mobility, contact lenses, dry eye,and traumatic brain injury.FOR ALL WHOADVANCEOUR FIELDToday, Dr. Stephen Burns, associate dean for graduateprograms (shown left), and Dr. William Swanson, professor of optometry (shown right), are collaboratingto better diagnose and assess the progression ofglaucoma. Their team thinks it can better understandthe processes by which aging and disease affect theretinal nerve fiber layer—the fibers at the back of the eyethat become the optic nerve—by using high-resolutionimaging data. This work is just one example of how we are reimaginingthe future of vision science through tireless inquiry andeffort. Join us in creating endowed faculty positions, and together, we will continue to improve the health andquality of life of countless people.“Our goal is that doctors willbe able to take a picture ofthe back of the eye, showingwhere the structure of theretinal nerve fiber layeris abnormal. That imagecould then be used to guidethe doctor to conduct moreprecise testing through betterdetection of damaged areas.”— William H. SwansonProfessor of Optometry

GOAL #3: INCREASE COMMUNITYOUTREACHWho can improve sight in our most vulnerablepopulations? We can. We believe in our powerto improve human life everywhere. We offeroutreach in Bloomington, Indianapolis, andabroad. But to realize our goal, we must do more. The social and economic effects of poor eye health are feltnot only by the individuals afflicted, but also by their familymembers and communities. Proper access to eye care andsurgery can improve both a person’s vision and their qualityof life. The IU School of Optometry Community Outreachprogram provides aspiring optometrists with hands-onexperiences and empowers them to make a difference. Each year, we provide screenings for the Junior Olympicsand Special Olympics, and school screenings for gradesK–5. We have also partnered with the City of Bloomingtonto provide free eye care and eyeglasses for underinsuredand uninsured patients. In their last year at the school, students work in three-monthrotations at the Indianapolis Eye Care Center, deepeningtheir humanitarian values as they volunteer with our localcommunities in need. There, they work among and inconjunction with the nation’s leading doctors in patient careand clinical teaching, gaining direct clinical experience.FOR ALLWHO SHAREOUR VISIONThese types of community outreach, while critical tothe development of our students, come at a significantfinancial cost. With your assistance, we can provide lifechanging services to those in need and better train the nextgeneration of caregivers.“We recently helped a woman in herlate 40s who’d had to stop workingbecause of cataracts. After surgery, she was able to work again and evenwent back to school.”— Julie Torbit, O.D. ’93Adjunct Clinical Associate ProfessorClinical Consultant, Indianapolis Eye Care CenterIT STARTSWITH YOUSupport for communityoutreach benefits localpatients in desperateneed of vision care, aswell as our students, whoare exposed to differingpatient populations.

GOAL #4: CREATE GLOBAL LEADERSAs the world continues to shrink, we mustextend the scope of our work beyond nationalborders. By serving global communities, wecan cultivate tomorrow’s leaders—people whounderstand international cultures, issues, and needs. Our chapter of the Volunteer Optometric Services toHumanity (VOSH) supports the community of Bloomingtonand its surrounding areas. With trips to Latin America—including recent visits to Guanajuato, Mexico—theorganization offers eye exams and distributes glasses inareas of the world that need good optometric services.FOR ALL WHOSERVE GLOBALCOMMUNITIES“Being able to be part of the last trip to Guanajuato and then tohelp lay the groundwork for our new partnership in Frome wassuch an amazing opportunity. While the location might havechanged, the camaraderie and the inspiring patients remained.”— Melissa Lewis, O.D. ’17President, Volunteer Optometric Service to HumanityIU School of Optometry ChapterMost recently, several of our students traveled to Frome,Jamaica. Of the 350 patients the group saw, theyadministered 100 eye exams, attended to more than60 post-operative care patients, and made referralsfor many others to receive sustainable treatmentand affordable surgeries.“ Our clinical experience in Jamaicataught us about such a wide rangeof diseases and conditions thatwill prepare us tremendouslyfor our future careers as ODs.The grateful, beautiful people ofJamaica who came to see us aspatients made the experienceeven more rewarding.” — Katie Lee, O.D. ’17Especially in places where these services aren’t available,it’s up to us to care for the vision of all. And by investingin the education of those who are most passionate aboutoutreach, you can empower them with real opportunitiesto develop skills while serving others. With your help, theywill provide greater service to their communities and thewider world.IT STARTSWITH YOUInternational outreachprograms extend ourlegacy beyond the bordersof Indiana, giving ourstudents and faculty afirsthand perspective onglobal eye health.
