ACADEMIC PROGRAMS: FACULTY/STUDENTSAdministration at the School of Optometry, University of California, BerkeleyJohn Flanagan became Dean of the School of Optometry, for a five-year term beginning June 1, 2014.The prior Dean Dennis Levi returned to being a Professor of Optometry and Vision Science. Chris Wilmerbecame Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in July 2014 replacing Ed Revelli who retired from theUniversity. Rick Van Sluyters remains as Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Gunilla HaegerstromPortnoy remains as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.Eric Leal was appointed as Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance in October 2014 and SharonJoyce remains as Assistant Dean for Admissions, Student Affairs and Career Services.Kristen Williams is now Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni Relations. Eric Craypo is the Directorof Communications.Faculty and AlumniNo long time faculty members have retired this last year. Two new faculty members joined us officially inJuly 2016: Assistant Professor Teresa Puthussery, OD, PhD and Professor Rowland Taylor, PhD. Weare currently searching for more full time tenure track faculty and expect to make an appointment in thespring/summer of 2017. The School now has 31 full time clinical faculty members with a total faculty FTEcount of 67.Faculty member Wendy Lam was President of ACCCOS in 2014 and faculty member Melanie Masonbecame President for the local society in 2015.Mike Patella, OD, long time optometric researcher and current VP for Professional Affairs at Carl ZeissMeditec, Inc was honored as the Alumnus of the Year for 2016 at the Alumni Reunion in October 2016.Professor Martin Banks received the highest award from the American Academy of Optometry, theCharles F. Prentice Medal in 2016 and gave a presentation at the Academy Annual meeting in Anaheimin November 2016.Optometry Faculty ResearchFrom July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, optometry faculty members generated 11.1 million in directannual funding for 54 different projects. Most projects are 3-5 years and funding was received fromvarious federal agencies (NIH, NSF, DOD) as well as private foundations and industry. This is anoutstanding performance given the difficulty of receiving research funding these days.The NEI Training Grant has been continuously funded for 39 years, and the Core Grant has been fundedfor 37 years. The School of Optometry has one other research training grant for optometry students (T35)which is now in year 23.8

For each of the 3parts, UCB students perform considerably better than the national average (see Table above).ResidentsA high proportion of graduating students apply for and receive a match for further residency training. For2016, 94% of 32 applicants from the graduating class matched in the ORMS round and 2 found positionspost-match for a total of 53% of the 2016 graduating class placed into residency positions.Vision Science graduatesOver the last 5 years, the Vision Science program has graduated 26 PhD’s and 2 MS students. Six of thePhD’s had prior health science training (OD or MD). In 2016, 4 students received PhDs and one studentreceived a MS degree9

Admissions and STUDENT AFFAIRS Office (ASAO)StaffThe academic year 2016-2017 has been positive and productive. The office is staffed by Assistant DeanSharon Joyce, Heather Iwata, Director, Assistant Director, Kait Guthrie, and our newest staff member,Carissa Caloud, is the Coordinator of Admissions and Student Affairs position.For prospective and current students, listed below are updates on new and past initiatives.RecruitmentAdmissions StatisticsWe collected 243 applications for Fall 2017 entry. Our Interview Day is on Saturday, January 28, and weare slated to interview 118 candidates. With the introduction of Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMIs) two yearsago, we have the most holistic file review of all optometric programs. Our quality remains high, asreflected by the first year Class of 2020, average OAT AA 352; Biology/Chemistry/ Physics (BCP) GPA 3.43, respectively.Ask an AdvisorThe ASAO has continued the “Ask an Advisor” program, which began in spring 2005. “Ask an Advisor”was created to meet the needs of prospective students who want to set up one-on-one appointments todiscuss admissions and the application process. The staff has set aside specific days each week wheneither a phone or in-person advising session can be arranged. This program continues to be a successfulavenue in providing prospective students with information and guidance as they prepare for theapplication process. We have also expanded our website to offer tips and advice to be a successfulapplicant.Diversity OutreachOur National Optometric Student Association (NOSA) chapter is thriving. In fact, the Berkeley Chapterwas selected as the School of the Year at the NOA national meeting in July of this year. NOSA membersat Berkeley Optometry continue to host instructional workshops to teach optometric Spanish and assistwith vision screenings in underserved communities. NOSA also organized and presented for the ASAOat summer visits, targeting underrepresented minority high school and middle school students to learnabout STEM fields. Finally, this past Fall, NOSA members also tabled and p
