About the Editors Suzanne M. (Hobson) Dugger, EdD, NCC, LPC, LLP, is an associate professor in the Department of Leadership and Counseling at Eastern Michigan University inYpsilanti, Michigan, and serves as the coordinator of the university’s CACREPaccredited school counseling program. Outside the university, she serves as a member of the Michigan Board of Counseling (state licensure board) and as the chair ofthe Michigan Department of Education’s School Counselor Educators Committee.Prior to accepting the lead editor responsibilities for this book, Dr. Duggerserved for 4 years as the editor of the journal Dimensions in Counseling: Research,Theory and Practice and has served on the editorial boards for the ProfessionalSchool Counseling and Elementary School Guidance & Counseling journals. In addition, she has been a contributor to The School Counselor Handbook, to Critical Incidents in Group Counseling, and to Case Studies in Child and Adolescent Counselingand has published articles in The Journal of Humanistic Counseling, Education andDevelopment, in the American Journal of Health Studies, in College Teaching, in Elementary School Guidance & Counseling, and in Professional School Counseling.In addition, Dr. Dugger is currently the chair of the American CounselingAssociation’s (ACA’s) Midwest Region and has served as the ACA HumanRights Committee Chair. She has also served as the president of the MichiganCounseling Association, as president of the Michigan Association for CounselorEducation and Supervision, and as a Governing Board Member of the MichiganSchool Counselor Association. Dr. Dugger is the founding member of theAssociation of Michigan School Counselors.Dr. Dugger received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from HarvardUniversity, where she also earned a teaching certificate. She earned her master’sdegree in counseling from Central Michigan University and her doctorate incounseling psychology from Western Michigan University. Before pursuing herdoctoral studies, Dr. Dugger served as an elementary school counselor for 5 years.xiii

Carlson, PhD, NCC, NCSC, is an associate professor in the School of Education’s Counseling and Career Development Program at Colorado StateUniversity in Fort Collins, Colorado. In addition to her faculty responsibilities,Dr. Carlson serves on the executive board of the Colorado School Counselors’Association as state conference coordinator.Dr. Carlson has made varied contributions to literature in the field, includingchapters in Spirituality as a Fifth Force in Counseling and Psychology: Implications forPractice, Training and Research; in Unfocused Kids: Helping Students to Focus on TheirEducation and Career Plans; in Professional School Counseling: A Handbook ofTheories, Programs & Practices; and in Measuring Up: Resources on Testing forTeachers, Counselors, and Administrators. Dr. Carlson’s work has also appeared invarious journals, including The International Journal of Testing; the Journal ofCounseling & Development; Professional School Counseling; the Rural Educator; andThe Journal of Humanistic Education, Counseling, and Development. Editorial dutieshave included serving as Web editor for the National Career DevelopmentAssociation Web site and serving on the guest editorial board for special issuesof the Journal of Counseling and Development and the E-Journal of Teaching andLearning in Diverse Settings. In addition to these contributions, Dr. Carlson servesas an external reviewer for school counseling and assessment titles published byHoughton Mifflin: Lahaska Press and Prentice Hall.National service is also a large part of Dr. Carlson’s professional life. In2000–2002, Dr. Carlson helped to establish the ACA task force on women incounseling. Since 2003, Dr. Carlson has served as a national trainer for theAmerican Psychological Association/Centers for Disease Control–Division ofAdolescent and School Health’s Healthy Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual StudentProject, and in 2004 Dr. Carlson was appointed cochair of ACA’s Sexual MinorityYouth Taskforce.Dr. Carlson earned her bachelor’s degree in English education fromMoorhead State University (now Minnesota State University—Moorhead), andtaught 7th through 12th grade language arts in northern Minnesota for 5 years.She then received her master’s degree in school counseling from WesternWashington University in Bellingham. Following this degree, Dr. Carlson servedas a kindergarten through 12th grade school counselor for 4 years in Minnesotabefore attaining her PhD in counselor education from the University ofArkansas, Fayetteville, in 2000.Dr. Carlson can be reached at laurie.carlson@colostate.edu.xiv
