Finance Faculty NewsMatthew Crook and Brian Walkup,Assistant Professors of Finance, recently had an article accepted forpublication in the Journal ofFinancial Research. The article istitled “Rankings and Trends inFinance Publishing: An IterativeApproach.”In the article, Dr. Crook and Dr.Walkup develop a new methodfor ranking academic journals, universities, anddoctoralprograms using an iterative loopranking system. The systemupdates internally requiring lessdependence on outside inputs, thus improving on prior rankingmethods. They base the rankings on a large, handcollected dataset consisting of information on allarticles published in 20 finance journals over a 30year period. In addition to the ranking system developed in thepaper, Dr. Crook and Dr. Walkup explore trends thathave occurred in the finance publishing environmentacross the 30 years in the dataset. They document anumber of shifts including an increase ininternationalization and an increase in co-authorship.Across time, the number of international universitiesin the Top 50 rankings has increased substantially.Improvements in technology allow greater access toco-authors at a distance, resulting in increases in thenumber of authors per paper and the probability thatco-authors are located at different universities. The extensive dataset was collected by a series ofgraduate research assistants; Dr. Crook and Dr.Walkup plan to use their unique dataset for a numberof other projects in the future.Welcome New Faculty MemberSvetlana Orlova received her Ph.D. in BusinessAdministration with a concentration in Finance atOklahoma State University in December of 2014.Prior to joining the University of Tulsa she worked asa Visiting Assistant Professor at Ohio University.Svetlana received a MBA degree with a concentrationin Finance in 2005 from Northern ArizonaUniversity, and accepted an offer from IntelCorporation for the position of a Senior FinanceAnalyst in a division that manages the majority ofIntel’s commercial contracts with suppliers. However, because of her strong desire for teachingand research, Svetlana decided to pursue a Ph.D.degree.
