For more information visit www.sensio.co.ukThe importance of furniture lightingIf there’s one space in yourhome where getting thelighting right is absolutelycritical, it has to be theheart of the home, thevery centre of householdlife; your kitchen.Your kitchen is, by its verynature, a multi-purpose space. The modern kitchen has evolvedinto much more than just a workarea - as well as a centre for foodpreparation or dining, it can alsobe a quiet area where you relax byyourself; a space where two peoplecan casually talk and mull over theday’s events; or it can be used asthe key social space in the home. This is the room that gets the mostuse, both during daylight hours andwell into the evening, so it is importantthat the lighting solution works ondifferent levels, providing bothfunctional and ambient atmospheresas appropriate, even creating thesesimultaneously if required! The correct lighting solution isinvaluable to maximising the moodof your kitchen, no matter what youuse it for; yet despite its importance, kitchen lighting is often overlooked.Consider the amount of investmentin other elements of the averagekitchen; cabinets, worktops, appliances, flooring etc.4But it is often this final, integral stepthat is neglected or treated as anafterthought. Given the numerouspersonal and financial advantagesthat fitting the right lighting canbring, this means a huge area ofopportunity is often missed!Lighting can add a great deal ofvalue to your kitchen. A thoroughlyplanned and well tailored lightingscheme is the ultimate finishingtouch. It ‘shows off’ a kitchen likenothing else and above all, adds thatall-important ‘WOW!’ factor.Boasting a cutting-edge aesthetic,Sensio’s lighting products canachieve the perfect scheme for anykitchen. To see the ‘WOW!’ factor foryourself, take a look at the ‘before’and ‘after’ images on these pageswhich feature the same kitchen, withand without lighting. You can seethat the difference is extraordinary. All Sensio products also act toreduce energy bills as well asreducing the impact lighting hason the environment.Above: Kitchen with ceiling lighting only.Opposite: Kitchen with full Sensio lighting solution.

For more information visit www.sensio.co.ukAspects of lightingThe key to getting alighting scheme that isright for your needs, is anunderstanding of thebasic principles of lightingdesign and how thespace itself functions. The kitchen design, the variousfunctions you need your kitchento fulfil and the moods you arelooking to create, are all of utmostimportance when choosing the rightlighting scheme for your kitchen. To help you select the lighting thatis most suitable for your needs, wehave identified the 3 key lightingenvironments for any kitchen; theseare Task, Mood and Convenience.Using each of these appropriatelyand achieving an overall balance tothe room results in the perfectcombination of aesthetics andfunction. It is worth noting that,as it is driven by usage, some typesof lighting will naturally fall intomore than one environment.Task LightingPut simply, task lighting provides appropriate and ample light to allow you to undertake everyday ‘traditional’kitchen duties such as food preparation e.g. chopping vegetables. It focuses on making the kitchen a workingarea. Task lighting is usually situated between the work surface and the person working in the kitchen.6

For more information visit www.sensio.co.ukMood LightingAlso referred to as feature, decorative or accent lighting, mood lighting is used to add dimension and depthto the room in order to create atmosphere and provide personality. Mood light provides a general all-overillumination that is fairly soft and unobtrusive. The purpose of mood lighting is to make the kitchen lookattractive. It is a decorative lighting effect, not a functional one. This kind of kitchen lighting immediatelyimproves the impact of any kitchen, yet it is often the most overlooked.Convenience LightingConvenience lighting has a more specific purpose. It is directional and intended to be focused towards aspecific area or to be used for particular job (making that job more ‘convenient’). It provides light for certainareas where a light is needed, i.e. in drawers or in cabinets.7

For more information visit www.sensio.co.ukWhy LED lighting?LEDs (Light EmittingDiodes) are an extremelyefficient way of producinglight and have overtakenthe traditional halogenas the first choice inmodern kitchen lightingdesign. Overall, LEDs aremore energy efficient andare therefore better forthe environment and lessexpensive to run.We are extremely proudto announce that thevast majority of SensioLighting‘s productrange is now LED.LED vs HalogenQ Energy & Cost SavingHD (High Definition) LEDs have alens over each diode to make theemitted light more intense, resultingin a higher light output per unitwhen compared with halogenfittings. Using this energy efficienttechnology each fitting has a lowpower consumption, with unitsrunning at 1.7W on average. Bymoving from conventional halogenlighting to LED you can save up to80% on power consumption andsee considerable savings on yourelectricity bills.Q Brightest Light OutputHD LEDs have a high light output equivalent to 20W of halogen whilst only using a fraction of thepower consumption.Q Long LifeHalogen light bulbs are rated forapproximately 3,000 hours of usefullife, while LEDs are rated forapproximately 40,000 hoursof indoor use. The long life spanof LEDs means they will ultimatelyoutlive your kitchen - saving youtime, money and hassle withreplacement lamps.Q No Wasted HeatWith halogen bulbs, around 90%of the energy used is converted toradiant heat. In comparison, withLED lighting only a fraction of theenergy used is converted to wastedheat. LEDs do not overheat and havezero output of ultra-violet radiationcompared to that of conventionalhalogen lighting.Q Advanced TechnologyLED kitchen lighting brings awhole new set of previouslyunimaginable possibilities. Someof the new technologies you’ll findwithin these pages include theincredible LED Dimming Sensor(see page 30), which is the first ofits kind in the UK.Our groundbreaking HD LED ClickSlideline System (see page 45) wasshortlisted amongst the finalists inthe leading trade awards show forthe industry, the 2011 KBBInnovation Awards.Selected fittings include an infra-redsensor switch - ideal to maintainhygiene and ease of activationcompared to touching light switches!Top left & right: HD LED Click Slideline System with Sensor.Above: SE40520 LED Dimming Sensor Switch.8
