THE ENNEAGRAMA Story about God’s Image Humanity created in God’s image.God offers a mirror to see their reflection. The mirror breaks. Each person picks up a piece and looks. Each one claims to see the true image of God.The fundamental illusion.A Fractured, Compartmentalised perception.

THE ENNEAGRAMOrigins Long but shrouded historyReputedly from Afghanistan 2000 years agoPossibly Christian contact in PersiaInfiltrated into Islam - Sufi oral traditionChilean, Oscar Ichazo brought Sufi tradition topublic attention in Chile and USA.

THE ENNEAGRAMOrigins Ichazo was taught in Bolivia by a man whosename he pedged not to reveal. Ichazo saw the Enneagram as a way ofexamining specifics about the structure of thehuman soul and particularly about the ways inwhich actual soul qualities of Essence becomedistorted, or contracted into states of ego.

THE ENNEAGRAMIntroduction to the West Term ‘Enneagram’ (9 places) introducedto the West by George Gurdjieff, spiritual teacherfirst half 20th century. Pyotr D. Ouspensky, best known student ofGurdjieff, put into written form. The work of Gurdjieff and Ichazo interestedmembers from the Esalen Institute, California. Claudio Naranjo from Esalen passed theenneagram on to Bob Ochs, S.J., LoyolaUniversity, Chicago, USA.

THE ENNEAGRAMPopularisation 1971 Bob Ochs introduced the Enneagramto Pat O’Leary, S.J., who tested its validity in thelight of Christian spirituality, particularly IgnatianSpirituality. Theory developed by Maria Beesing, O.P. Developed further in collaboration with RobertNogosek, C.S.C, using insights of Tad Dunne, S.J.on the causes of compulsion and the spiritual lifeas derived from gospel values. Popularised through writings of Richard Rohr.

THE ENNEAGRAMwhat’s it about?1. A personal and spiritual journey.2. Helping people see themselves3. To see the images of personality distorted bybasic attitudes about self4. To identify and admit the prevailing“compulsion”5. To be open to see life more fully

THE ENNEAGRAMwhat’s it about?6. Discovering one’s compulsion, onesees the roots of one’s sinfulness, spiritualblindness (lack of awareness), limitations tofreedom, and barriers to love and be loved7. provided one is willing to address the“hidden sin” in one’s behaviour and to lookdirectly to God for healing.8. A new self-understanding.

THE ENNEAGRAMwhat’s it about?9. Understanding the causes of one’scompulsion (an irresistible, irrational impulseto act, based on unfulfilled personal needs, hidden within the unconscious)10.Overcoming the compulsion. Movementtowards growth in self-awareness, personaland spiritual freedom and maturity, underthe lead of the Spirit.

THE ENNEAGRAMwhat’s it about?11.A system of personality type12.Determined in a ‘negative’ way – the specificcompulsion in one’s prevailing self-concept,which has big influence on outer behaviourand inner dynamics13.The type can become less compulsive andmore redeemed14.The compulsion presents as the avoidance ofsomething or inordinate desire for something

THE ENNEAGRAMwhat’s it about?15.By going too far with this desire oravoidance one ends with a correspondingpassion.16. The task of each type is to discover his/herdesire and avoidance, which leads to passion.

WHERE AM I ONTHE ENNEAGRAM ?Finding My Place

THE ENNEAGRAMthe triads The Enneagram arranges the 9 types in 3 basictriads according to the three Centers ofhuman intelligence; Thinking, Feeling, andInstinct. To find out where I sit on the Enneagram mystarting place is to work out which triad bestdescribes the general characteristics of myprevailing compulsion?

THE ENNEAGRAMthe numbers When I have some sense of the triadwhich relates to my experience of myself Ihave narrowed the field to three possiblenumbers. I now look at the characteristics of eachnumber It helps to look at which numbers I do not like, due to the fact we tend to shy away from ourcompulsion.

THE ENNEAGRAMthe numbers The compulsion typical of a givennumber is experienced as a basic driving force It is not simply an obsession, such as a fixedidea or preoccupation It has the characteristic of prevailing in theway energy is channelled in personalbehaviour, and even being irresistible, especially when it remains hidden andunrecognised.

THE ENNEAGRAMAvoidances The compulsion acts within the personalityin such a hidden way that a personunconsciously avoids their higher essentialqualities and projects it away from themselves, or represses it within, essentially living in denial or ignorance of theirtrue self

ESSORDINARINESSAVOIDANCES

THE ENNEAGRAMHoly Ideas the Enneagram calls the higher, essentialqualities of the human mind the Holy Ideas The Holy Ideas relate to our ideals – what weaspire to be. Natural Ideals Theocentric Self-transcending (Gospel) Ideals

HOLY LOVEHOLY TRUTHHOLY PERFECTIONHOLY WISDOM,HOLY PLANHOLY WILL,HOLY FREEDOMHOLY LAW,HOLY HOPEHOLY FAITHHOLY OMNISCIENCE,HOLY TRANSPERANCYHOLY ORIGINHOLY IDEAS

THE ENNEAGRAMHoly Ideas Each Holy Idea also has a correspondingVirtue. The Virtues are essential qualities of the heartexperienced by human beings when they areabiding in Essence.

THE ENNEAGRAMEgo-Fixation As a person loses awareness and presence, falling away from Essence into the trance of thepersonality, the loss of awareness of the HolyIdea becomes a person's Ego-fixation, While everyone has the capacity to embody all ofthe Holy Ideas and Virtues, one pair of them iscentral to the soul's identity, so the loss of it isfelt most acutely, and the person's ego is mostpreoccupied with recreating it, although in futile,self-defeating way.(see article - Compulsion to Recreate and Overcome Childhood Hurts)

THE ENNEAGRAMEgo-Fixation We are all trapped in this illusion making I avoid my Higher Self because I amthreatened by the needs of my Actual Self Energy of this avoidance determines me A fixation in my way of being - where myenergy gets stuck A shell that gives protection and security tomy self-concept

THE ENNEAGRAMPassions As a person loses awareness and falls awayfrom the Higher Essential Self, the loss ofcontact with the Virtue causes the person'scharacteristic Passion. Leads to an exaggeration of the prevailingself-defensive, self-concept. According to Ichazo, parallel to the ninePassions, is the Seven Deadly Sins.

SSIONS

THE ENNEAGRAM Thus, the Passions and Ego-fixations representthe ways that spiritual qualities becomecontracted into ego states. There are 9 main ways that we lose our centreand become distorted in our thinking, feeling, and doing, and are thus the nine ways that weforget our connection with the Divine. The Passions can also be thought of as ouruntamed animal nature (instincts) before it istransformed by contact from higher influences—awareness and Grace.

Relationship between Higher Essence Qualities and Ego Distortions

THE ENNEAGRAMIdealisations or Prides Another helpful way to locate ourselves on theEnneagram is to name our Pride Ego-fixation is compensatory in nature, idealising that which is lost or diminishedwithin one’s self-concept The “I am ” statements of pride aredefensive idealisations of the False Self
