The choirs return, education programs resume, we gatherfor fellowship.Hope experienced indynamic worship.Hope inspired by the inclusivelove of Jesus Christ. There is a spiritual home for youat House of Hope.A Message from Reverend Andrew McDonaldAs summer draws to a close, it’s time tolook forward to what comes next. I amexcited about the next few months. Myvery positive experience at House ofHope confirms to me that yourreputation as a leading church in thePC(USA) is well deserved. Let me sharewith you my plans for autumn. To prepare for the successful ministryof your next Pastor, the church needsto reflect on who the House of Hope isnow, and how God is calling you to moveinto the future. We need to discover theshared wisdom of HOH’s members, sothat we can seek the guidance of theHoly Spirit. To that end, I am planning aseries of congregational gatherings. Wewill talk together and learn from oneanother about your hopes, hurts, anddreams for the future. Some of thequestions will include: What elements of HOH’s history areimportant to remember? What were some events of the pastthat continue to shape the churchtoday? What dreams do you have for thefuture of HOH?What losses are importantto recognize? What challenges do we face asa congregation? What are the greatest strengths ofthis church? How can we build uponthose strengths? Can we identify any areas of needthat are crucial to address? What changes can we anticipate inthe neighborhood, city, and region? What will those changes mean forthe future of HOH?Are there changes HOH needs tomake now to prepare for the nextHead of Staff? And of course, as good Presbyterians, there will be surveys and meetings. TheSession and I are interested in what youhave to say, so we can set a strategicvision for the future. After that, thecongregation will elect a PastoralNominating Committee, who will be wellinformed as to what gifts and strengthswill be needed for successful leadershipin the next Pastor.I am looking forward to working withyou to discern your vision. As thescripture says, “With God, all thingsare possible.” God is preparing you fora wonderful future through theHouse of Hope.Sincerely,Andrew McDonaldTransitional Pastor/Head of Staff

Update on the search for aTransitional Associate PastorUpon the departure of Reverend JeffFoels, the Session authorized thePersonnel Committee to act as thesearch committee for the TransitionalAssociate Pastor. The PersonnelCommittee began its work immediatelyafter Jeff Foels’ departure and hasdrafted a position description which hasbeen submitted to the Presbytery fortheir approval. We anticipate theirapproval in late August. Once thathappens, we will advertise the positionregionally and shortly thereafter beginto interview candidates. We want to adda Transitional Associate Pastor to ourministerial team as soon as possible. Weexpect the Transitional Associate Pastorwill be with us until after a Pastor/ Headof Staff has been installed.—On behalf of the Personnel Committee,Kay Solon, ChairA Few Thoughts on Centering PrayerStephen BrachlowCentering Prayer is a prayer of rest, aprayer of our resting in the arms ofGod much like a trusting child who iscontent in the arms of a loving parent. It is perhaps helpful to note that theGreek Orthodox Church uses the termhesychastic prayer—hesychia is a Greekword meaning “to be at rest.” Suggestions regarding this prayer:Attitude: Let Go and Let GodPrayer is ultimately not our work, but thework of the Spirit in us. As the ApostlePaul put it: “The Spirit helps us in ourweakness; for we do not know how topray as we ought, but that very Spiritintercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knowswhat is the mind of the Spirit, becausethe Spirit intercedes for the saintsaccording to the will of God.” A beautifulpicture of the letting-go-and-letting-Godattitude of this prayer is found in DeniseLevertov’s poem entitled “The Avowel:”As swimmers dareto lie face to the skyand water bears them,as hawks rest upon airand air sustains them,so would I learn to attainfree-fall, and floatinto Creator Spirit’s deep embrace, knowing no effort earnsthat all-surrounding grace.10 a.m.Sunday, September 2, 201815th Sunday after PentecostSunday, September 9, 201816th Sunday after PentecostRally SundayMotet Choir:I Will Praise Thee, O God; NystedtSing Unto God, HandelChoir School:With a Voice of Singing, ShawWord of addressGently and silently as you breath, usea simple word or phrase such as HolySpirit, Lamb of God, peace, Kyrie eleison(Lord have mercy), or any other word orwords that come to you. This is used notso much to think about God as it is anexpression of our hearts, the still pointat the center of being where we allowourselves to both love and be loved bythe One who first loved us.DistractionsWandering thoughts, sounds, anddiscomfort are always present, but theycan be let go. Whenever you becomeaware of any, acknowledge it and thenreturn to your prayer-word and let itbring you back to a loving awareness ofGod’s presence.Freedom of the SpiritThere is no single or right way to doCentering Prayer. Sometimes I do noteven follow the guidelines I’ve suggestedabove—I simply sit quietly, let my minddrift, and let the 20 minutes of silencedo the work of the Spirit in this prayer.Whatever your heart leads you to do,pray in that way.Practice Centering Prayer atHouse of Hope with Rev. Tending to our Spiritual GrowthReverend Julia A. CarlsonAs we begin to think about closing downour gardens and emptying flower pots,it’s a good time to consider tending toour spiritual growth. Sticking with thismetaphor, daily devotionals can be verygood compost for the soul.
