It is with gratitudethat we publish our Report for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, which ended June 30,2020. As with so many other agencies and services, JFS was hit hard by the secondary effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The primaryeffects of the virus have impacted so many lives and thehealth of so many people near and dear. We offer ourheartfelt condolences to those of you that may have beenimpacted by loss during this pandemic.The secondary effects of the pandemic impacted theagency in several ways. We have been limited in our ability to have face-to-face interaction with many of the people who count on our services for support. However, theagency has adapted and been resourceful in making sureKelly Burroughs, CEOthat the health and safety of those who turn to JFS, and ourstaff, have been maintained. We continue to provide Mealson Wheels, food and financial assistance, guardianshipservices, counseling and adoption home studies, as well asprivate duty home care services.During the height of the initial outbreak, JFS’ programs,especially in home health, were significantly impacted.One direct result of these impacts was the decision by theBoard of Directors to close the Skilled Home Healthprogram. There were many factors that influenced thisEllen Rosenblum, Presidentdecision — primarily the need to focus on the mission-basedprograms and services that are the core of Jewish Family Service, especiallyduring moments of greatest need.We are so grateful for the generosity of the community who heard our pleasfor financial assistance, protective equipment and volunteers. Our community hascome together to support the most vulnerable among us. This speaks volumesabout the generosity and compassion that the Tidewater Jewish community hasfor others, and it has ripple effects on helping us all to heal and grow from thesedifficult times.JFS’ focus for the future is in expanding the supports and services we providein our Clinical Counseling programs and in our private duty Embrace Home Careprogram. Mental health crises are at an all-time high; the isolation, grief, fearand loss people have endured during this pandemic make the need to focus onexpanding these services even more important now. Our Embrace Home Careprogram helps people remain in their homes, avoiding congregant care settingssuch as nursing homes where the virus has been especially devastating. Each ofthese models presents challenges in the age of COVID, but with the support of thecommunity, we are well prepared for overcoming these obstacles.Your financial support and generosity are recognized on the followingpages but cannot fully express and acknowledge the impact that you have madein helping JFS survive during these very challenging times.We are forever grateful!Sincerely,Kelly Burroughs, Chief Executive OfficerEllen Rosenblum, President
