There, in 2007, she was diagnosed withtongue cancer which was aggressively treated withtwo rounds of chemotherapy given concurrentlywith seven weeks of radiation treatment. This wasfollowed by life-changing surgery where 70 percentof her tongue was removed and then reconstructed.What she faced back in 2007 was terrifying and shecould barely speak without bursting into tears. Buttoday, she speaks so sincerely about the incrediblequality of her care—both physical and emotional.Her doctors were not only compassionate, butrespectful that she had very difficult decisions tomake, and they took the time to empower her withthe information she needed.This year, Maria made another decision.
