OUR HISTORYWe know how much planning, hard work, patience,“and creativity go into making it a success on a daily basis. While our child’s growth and desire to learn are obviouslyparamount, it is important that we also acknowledge thequality and warmth of your communication with us as parents.”CURRENT FAMILYthe Gillen Brewer School was founded in 1992 bylaura Bilicic and laurie dubos as a school for childrenwith significant learning challenges. As special education teachers, they saw the overwhelming need for a schoolin New York City where families with children who have significant specialneeds would be welcomed, educated, and supported. The founders believedthat a knowledgeable and informed family was invaluable to each child’soverall education. To underscore the importance of family, the school wasnamed after the founders’ grandmothers, Mattie Gillen and Virginia Brewer. The school opened in 1992 with one student and added classes until itreached 48 students from Pre-K through second grade. Forty-eight studentswere housed in what had once been the servants’ quarters of a stately mansionon Park Avenue. In August 2005, the school moved to its current location at410 East 92nd Street. The school currently has 88 students and 62 staff.4tHe Gillen BreWer ScHool2017-2018 annualannual reportreport2017-201854

2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTS2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTSdr. audrey HalpernAs Dr. Audrey Halpern enters her 14th year workingas a psychologist at Gillen Brewer, she could not bemore thrilled to take on her new position as theHead of the Psychology Department. Audrey ispassionate about the mission of the department:promoting the social and emotional health andwell-being of the Gillen Brewer community, whichencompasses the students, families and staff. The Psychology Department does this by providingstudents with individual and group therapy, bothin and out of the classroom; offering consultation, training and support to staff; and partnering with parents and caregivers. One of Audrey’s favorite things about working at Gillen Brewer is the opportunity to be a part of a community of learners; a place where all are curious, dedicated, and passionate about the work they do and the students and families they serve, andeveryone has the chance to learn from one another. She relishes the knowledge shehas gained over the years, as she has learned from the incredible students, familiesand staff with whom she has worked, and is always looking forward to learning more. This year, Audrey is especially excited about furthering the ongoing initiative tointegrate social-emotional learning into the fabric of the classrooms on a schoolwide level. She has observed the significant impact of learning and practicing theseconcepts together as a class and looks forward to continuing to develop and implement social-emotional lessons in collaboration with the other therapy departments.Audrey holds a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University, an M.A. inApplied Child Development from Tufts University, and a B.A. in Psychology fromEmory University.great faith in my daughter, and because of Gillen Brewer,“I haveI moveforward with assuredness and confidence.”ALUMNI FAMILY10tHe Gillen BreWer ScHool2017-2018 annual report11
