Usually takes two years to completeif studying full time, and four years ifstudying part time. Equivalent to the first year of a Universitydegree. Equivalent to the first and second year ofa University degree. Usually a more introductory programmewith a ‘core’ of learning essential to thesubject (some sectors may have morespecialist content depending on level ofentry to the job market). A more specialised programme of learningwith pathways linked to occupationaloutcomes. Opportunities to develop projectmanagement skills. Real world success Christopher MeredithChristopher Meredith is a higher level apprenticeworking for the Jacobs engineering consultancyin Leeds, where he has progressed throughcompletion of the Level 3 Extended Diploma inConstruction and the Built Environment and theLevel 3 Advanced Technical Apprenticeship andBTEC HNC before embarking on the Higher LevelApprenticeship in February 2018.Chris enrolled at the Leeds College of Building topursue a BTEC Level 2 in Construction and theBuilt Environment (CBE) having taken the Level1 at school. While Chris’s determined progressdown in excitement along with him at the newsof his appointment, and the pride that he felt.Chris is now heavily involved in the technicaldesign of highways using 3D visualisation modelsand drawings. He communicates with projectteams all around the world and is instrumentalin solving complex civil engineering problems forJacobs Engineering.Having gained the Institution of Civil Engineer’sQuest Technician Scholarship – awarded only toapprentices of the highest calibre – and passing“Enrolling on a BTEC course has changed my life because it’s given me a prospectand a qualification that I need. And I can use this knowledge at work, as well aswork knowledge at college so it works both ways. “through these levels is impressive in itself,what makes Chris an award-winner is the factthat he has done this against the odds, liftinghimself out of what could have been an unhappyfuture through the sheer force of his effort andpersonality.Chris left school disillusioned with no GCSEs,having been frequently suspended during histime there. With his brother and several friendshaving already fallen foul of the law, Chris mightwell have gone a similar way, but he wanted morefor himself, describing a “desperate yearning tobe successful.” Having taken the Level 1 BTECat school, Chris was able to enrol on the Level2 course at college without GCSEs – a decisionwhich he says, “changed his life forever.”Following a successful work placement, he wasoffered an Apprenticeship and has never lookedback. He recalls how his lecturers jumped up andthe Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) TechnicianProfessional Review, Chris has gone fromstrength to strength.Modestly giving much of the credit for his successto BTEC, Chris is actively involved with marketingapprenticeships and higher education to otheryoung people, through radio and television, andacts as a mentor to junior apprentices at work.He also volunteers as a Student Ambassador atLeeds College of Building, because he says, “it’simportant to give something back to the collegethat’s supported me for 6 plus years.”Chris’s ambition is to finish his degree and‘hopefully progress through the ranks of mycompany’. Chris is an excellent role model forapprentices - and living proof that with hard workand determination you can achieve anythingyou want.
