JUNE 19THE OLDE ROD & GUNNER4The Dulzura DesperadosAt the sbr&gcCowboy Ac on Shoo ng is a shoo ng sport created in 1982 by a few gentlemen now known as the Wild Bunch. In 1987 theyofficially formed the Single Ac on Shoo ng Society (SASS). Originally based in Yorba Linda, California, SASS eventually movedtheir opera on to Founders Ranch in New Mexico. SASS is the largest and most widely accepted organiza on for western styleshoo ng.The Dulzura Desperados were established at the South Bay Rod & Gun Club in 2000. The sport recreates life in the old westthrough shoo ng courses of fire (called stages) designed to depict a movie scene, an old west historical shootout or justsomeone's idea of how it may have been in the late 1800's. For obvious safety reasons, it is highly recommended that shootersa have previous shoo ng experience and be familiar with the safe opera on of single ac on revolvers, rifles and shotguns. ACowboy Ac on Shoo ng compe on is not the venue to receive your ini al firearms training. To add to the "fantasy" experience, all shooters are required to wear some form of period dress. Typically, long pants (ordresses for the ladies), boots, cowboy hat and shirts with long sleeves. No shorts, ball caps or adver sing is permi ed on anyclothing. For firearms, you will need two single ac on pistols, a lever ac on rifle (in a pistol caliber) and a side by side shotgun(without ejectors) or a Winchester model 1897 pump shotgun (or reproduc on) with an exposed hammer. Guns generallymust be designed prior to 1900 but modern versions like the Ruger Blackhawk & Vaquero or Colt clones are acceptable. Youwill need holsters and a carrier for shot shells. All bullets are lead only and have feet per second requirements. But, most importantly, you will need an Alias! Pick a name that fits your personality, job, chosen western character or one thatjust sounds good. If you join SASS (we highly recommend that you do), they will issue you a badge (with your personal SASSmember number) and register your alias. Your alias is unique to you and is never duplicated. You may check at sassnet.com/AliasLookup.php to see if anyone already has the alias you are thinking about choosing. Joining SASS or the South Bay Rod andGun Club is not a requirement to shoot in our monthly matches. However, SASS membership is required for SASS sanc oned, state level and above, matches. As you par cipate in the sport you will learn there is a rule called "The Spirit Of The Game”. This rule is the founda on of Cowboy Ac on Shoo ng. "The Spirit Of The Game" signifies that we are par cipa ng for FUN. Because there are no prizes for winning a match, the incen ve to play is FUN. If you are willing to sacrifice FUN for a victory, then this is not the game foryou. The only prize is to have bragging rights over your pardners un l the next match.Complete SASS Rules are available in one of their SASS Handbooks. If you are interested in par cipa ng, the best way to learnmore is by visi ng the SASS web site and going to watch a Cowboy Ac on Shoo ng monthly match or two. All clubs welcomevisitors and are eager to explain what is involved. Bring eye and ear protec on.You will find that Cowboy Ac on Shooters are the friendliest folks on the planet. Because we all share a fondness for the oldwest and the firearms of the me, we have an immediate bond that expands into long term friendships.COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING COMPETITION*There are no prizes for winning, just bragging rights un l the next match.*Cowboy Ac on Shoo ng is shoo ng scenarios using firearms that are all of 1899 or earlier in design or manufacture. This includes rifles, pistols and shotguns.*Matches are not quick draw contest.*Cowboy Ac on Shoo ng is NOT the place to learn how to shoot. It is where experienced shooters go to play the fantasy ofCowboy Ac on Shoo ng.*The "Spirit Of The Game" is a term we use to describe the honor of the old west, a handshake was your bond and honesty was the rule of the day. It also means the shooter fully par cipates in what the stage requires. (Common-sense excep onsare made for those shooters with physical disabili es that hinder par cipa on in certain ac vi es. For example, a wheelchairbound shooter is not expected to mount the "horse" in the middle of a stage).*If in doubt, just remember "WWJWD" (What would John Wayne do?)*Remember, No target is to close or too big, that it can't be missed. And remember, It ain't how good you shoot; it's how good you look shoo ng!
