Widi, the head of thetranslation team, shares withus his story of this project. The Indonesian translation hasfinally been completed andwas published here:My name is Nugroho Widi. Youcan call me Widi, which manypeople find easier to pronounce.(Like many Indonesians, I don’tuse a family name.) I was bornin Indonesia and have livedhere my entire life. I amcurrently retired, and mostrecently I have been a webadministrator, developer, programmer, and consultant.I had a great start in life withgreat prospects. My primaryand secondary education wereexcellent, so I went to university.I got a bachelor’s degree inagricultural technology, but thatkind of work didn’t make mehappy, so I got a master’sdegree in management. I wasnot as successful in businessas I had expected to be. So Igot a master’s degree intheology, studying Christianityand Islam. However, I was notinterested in becoming a pastor. So there I was, in limbo, notsuccessful and not rich. I feltcapable, but somehow unableto attain the high levels where Ifelt I belonged. I failed toachieve excellence in anything, and feelings of mediocrityhaunted me. Later yearsbrought me mundane andcommon work, and Iexperienced many failures.Meanwhile, around 1997,driven by curiosity about thesupernatural, I found TheUrantia Book on a paranormalwebsite which no longer exists. Idownloaded the English papersfrom urantia.org, and one yearlater bought the printed bookfrom Amazon. I finished readingit by 1999.As a truth seeker, I experienceda good vibe within my heartfrom this book, so I quickly

URANTIA FOUNDATION’S NEWS ONLINEaccepted it. For me, its truth iscoherent to both the brain andheart. The text is alsosystematic and answers manyquestions. Having a scientificmind, I could only accepttheological teachings that areconsistent with simple factssuch as evolution, geologicalages, and astronomy.Naturally, I wanted to shareThe Urantia Book in Indonesia.Islam is the majority religionwith 80%, Christians are 15%,and the rest include Buddhistsand Hindus. I faced negativereactions from evangelicalChristians who believe theBible is the infallible Word ofGod. I found that mostCatholics, however, did notreject The Urantia Book. The majority of Muslims I haveconnected with have shown noreaction so far. There are asmall number of Muslims thattend toward the new age andmetaphysics, and I met a fewthat were interested in readingit. They kept asking me to do atranslation. When the projectbegan, some even joined theteam by reviewing my work. This journey was a clear calling,so I contacted UrantiaFoundation. In 2000, I had anagreement with SeppoKanerva, who was UrantiaFoundation’s manager oftranslations at the time, but Imade very slow progressbecause of my inability tosupport the project by myself. This changed in 2013 whenGeorges Michelson-Dupont(who is the current manager oftranslations) visited my countryand met our small group: me,Yusuf, Intan, and Rahman. Wereceived a new contract, supervision, and enoughsupport to continue thejourney. This translation path was along, rough, and winding road.Asian languages have adifferent structure thanEnglish. The Indonesianlanguage came from Arabicand Sanskrit. Verbs arederived from syllables andexpanded using prefixes andsuffixes. There are no pastand present tenses, and thegrammar structure isdifferent. The Urantia Bookuses so many complexsentences, one can imaginethe difficulties in translatingit! With 2000 pages totranslate, my daily work ratecould be very slow.Understanding onesentence’s true meaningcould be a big challenge. Some were simply too muchfor my mind, and I wouldspend days on one page. Themost challenging parts totranslate were the Forewordbecause of new words anddefinitions, and papers aboutthe Supreme because oftheir many complexsentences. In total, the translation tookfour laptops plus 20 years ofcountless hours every dayincluding weekends andholidays. Georgesmaintained steadycommunication and assistedme in many ways includingmuch patience andmeaningful insights.Thankfully, my secular careeralways allowed enough idletime to sit down andtranslate.Looking back, I believe ourMaster arranged everythingand took full advantage ofmy strengths, weaknesses, failures, and mediocrities. Myhunger for high achievementmotivated me to continue, dayby day, on what appeared anendless road. My wastedcareer ambition came to life atthe prospects of translatingthe fifth epochal revelation.Had I been successful in thesame way as my friends, Iwould not have become atranslator. And through it all,God provided for me and myfamily. Now that the Indonesiantranslation is finished, thework of spreading its supernalteachings begins. I hope thetranslation will be improved overtime, and that it will be anuplifting reference for betteringthe current religions of our time.Ultimately, they will unite in thereligion of Jesus. When the project was completed,I inhaled deeply. I recently retiredand am now self-employed andlearning to live again. I cannotrest for a long time though. Soon Imust check my engine, fill my fueltank, and prepare for newchallenges ahead. Thistranslation was only the firstmilestone, the first phase of theoriginal calling of the Master!I must continue serving even withmy worn-out engine, until it isbroken. But I know that theMaster will give me a betterengine on the mansion worlds.Jakarta, Indonesia

Similar to Jesus,he would often posequestions more than givinganswers, suggesting thattruth is more about anongoing dialogue than aspecific conclusion.Steve Dreier, Gard JamesonBy Gard Jameson, treasurer,Urantia Foundation, Nevada,United StatesEditor’s Note: Steve Dreier wasa longtime reader of TheUrantia Book who brokered apriceless donation to UrantiaFoundation in 2016. ThroughSteve's efforts, the Foundationreceived 103 boxes of booksfrom the private collection ofan anonymous donor. Thecollection included sourcebooks, other volumes bysource authors, andpublications by William andLena Sadler. This giftprompted a major renovationof the basement, which nowhouses the MelchizedekLibrary and the exquisite Hallof the Life Carriers.Steve lived in New Jerseywith his wife, Bobbie. Hegraduated on April 5 afterbeing hospitalized with thecoronavirus. Bobbie isenhancing Steve’s legacywith the gift of his ownpersonal collection of booksto the library.Steve Dreier has been afriend for 45 years andcontinues to be a friend, though he has recentlyascended to the mansionworlds. Since I first saw himaudaciously move frombehind the lectern to grab achair and have aconversation with thoseattending the conference in1975 at Kendall College, Ihave been inspired by thisson of God. His wit andwisdom have earned him aFlorence and I had theprivilege of having a one-onone Zoom session with Steveand Bobbie on Paper 110,“Relation of Adjusters toIndividual Mortals,” overseveral recent months. Wewould take a few paragraphsat a time and really drill downin the material, to illuminatethe text and inspire oursouls. Steve was aconsummate student of therevelation. In fact, he hasbeen designated by some asour resident Rabbi! His smileand thoughtful engagementwere infectious to those whoknew him. Many are thetimes that I would seek hisspiritual counsel on seriousmatters in my own spiritualjourney. Always would I feelbetter after receiving hisadvisement. Those that knew him knowthat he had a passion for thetexts that were utilized by therevelatory commission intheir presentation of therevelation. Not many havetaken up the mantle toinvestigate those texts andtheir authors, but it is animportant field of inquiry forany serious student of TheUrantia Book. He and I wouldspend a great deal of timediscussing this material andthe implications. Thefollowing sources—RalphTyler Flewelling, CreativePersonality, (Papers 130,132), Henry Nelson Wieman,The Issues of Life, (Paper160), or Walter Bundy, (“TheFaith of Jesus,” Paper 196)—are monumental and deservedeep reflection, for theyspeak to the awesomenature of revelation itself.Mostly, I knew Steve as afriend. I was cheered by hispresence and by his graciousmanner. Watching and beingwith Steve and Bobbie wasan inspiration for both mywife, Florence, and me. Wegot to spend some of the lastdays of his life with the two ofthem, reading the revelation, pondering theimponderables, and sharinghumor and memories. Steveembodied what it means tobe a son of God. For that Ishall ever be thankful!I look forward to seeing youagain on high, brother Steve,in the eternal adventure!Bobbie Dreier, Steve Dreier

Manypresenters for this 24-hoursession were trustees andcurrent or former associatetrustees. It concluded with aquestion and answer periodhosted by the presidents of thethree organizations.Urantia Book students fromaround the world were broughttogether remotely duringUrantia Association’s secondworldwide 24-Hour OnlineEvent. The first event of thistype was held in March as aresponse to the social isolationexperienced during the COVID19 pandemic (and was aptlytitled “A Reward of Isolation”).The second conference beganon May 2 at midnight GMT(1:00 a.m. British SummerTime) and continued for 24hours with a differentpresenter for each hour of theday. This format has beencelebrated by UrantiaAssociation president, ChrisWood. “Participation in thewider Urantia community usedto be limited to those whocould afford to attend aconference—pay for the planeTopics during the event rangedfrom presentations directlyrelated to the teachings of TheUrantia Book (with titles suchas, “Evolutionary Timeline” and“Assertiveness ‘Jesus Style’”),to group meditations, and apresentation on interfaithactivities. They covered a widepanorama of subjects. As GeriJohnson, of Hawaii, put it whenshe transitioned from theprevious presentation to herown, “We are going to go fromthe global to the personal.”Geri gave her presentation onestablishing conversationsabout spirituality with people. She offered valuable “go-to”questions such as, “What isyour faith background and howdoes that work for you?”People had an opportunity todiscuss conversations thatthey have had with others, during which I learned that Iam not the only person to takeadvantage of the captiveaudience of a masseuse.Zooming in from her home inIsrael, Sandra Burga-Cisnerosshared a presentation on thechemistry of a brain that isunder stress and the solutionthat is found in self-kindness,common humanity, and selfawareness—mindfulness.Dr. James Perry and SherryCathcart Chavis, both in theUnited States, presented“Brotherly and Fatherly LoveDuring COVID-19.” Participantshad an opportunity to sharethe many ways that theycontinue to serve others whilesheltering at home. Sherrymade the observation, “Thisstate of affairs has brought outa level of love and concernand caring for others thatshould always be present. This can be my attitude everyday of my life.”To begin his presentationtitled “Self-Control: The Pathto Divinity,” Luis Morales, ofArgentina, led a meditationwith beautiful scenery on thescreen and his own music tolisten to, which he composesunder the name Dipti Bhakti.Later in the presentation, participants were treated to avideo of his four-month-oldbaby, who was giggling andkicking his legs, seemingly atrandom in the way that babiesdo, and this was used asmetaphor for the ways inwhich we learn to control ourown movements—we learnthe self-control that is neededfor Adjuster fusion. The presentation that had melaughing in my head (mutedthough I was) took placeduring the time slot attributedto Merritt Horn, though poorMerritt couldn’t get a word inedgewise on his own topic. When one presents with sucha controversial title as “Is TheUrantia Book Scripture?,” onecan only expect to heareveryone give voice to theirthoughts.People have eagerly askedwhen the next 24-hour eventwill be, and the Associationanticipates hosting themregularly. However, the Marchand May conferences wereheld in close succession dueto the fact that so manypeople have been living inisolation; going forward, theAssociation hopes to schedulethese events a few times peryear. No events are scheduledyet, but I hope you will join inthe next one.

URANTIA FOUNDATION’S NEWS ONLINEW H AT T H E U RANT IA B O OKM EA N S TO M ESecondary SchoolBy Brad Garner, Arizona,United StatesI am a second-generation,lifelong student of The UrantiaBook, by way of my parents.Looking back over my life, Ican see how the book'smeanings have evolved for me.Below is a view into some ofwhat I've figured out. I’vedivided my life into chapters. Each chapter presents a shortquote from The Urantia Bookthat exemplifies that time inmy life, and I describe a bitmore about what was going onback then.Primary School“Your world, Urantia, is one ofmany similar inhabited planetswhich comprise the localuniverse of Nebadon.” 0:0.5(1.5) I can’t remember a timewhen I ever believed we’realone in the universe. As ayoung boy I couldn’t read veryfar into The Urantia Book, but Iam sure I at least read throughpage 1 by my eighth year. AndI’ll bet my parents tried toexplain Nebadon to me “with asweep of [their] arm” 93:2.3(1015.3) across the night sky.Becoming a Star Trek fan wasa sure next step.“Plants and animals survive intime by the technique ofpassing on from onegeneration to another identicalparticles of themselves. Thehuman soul (personality) ofman survives mortal death byidentity association with thisindwelling spark of divinity, which is immortal.” 132:3.6(1459.6) Although I couldn’tyet apply philosophicalprinciples to daily living, I wasable to read The Urantia Bookand apparently extractdoctrinesque rules forsalvation, immortal life, praying, etc. This particularquote is poignant because ourfamily cat and my grandmotherboth died when I was 16. Itwas clear I would not see ourcat again, but that I would seemy grandmother again. Foryears I wept bitterly for my lostcat; I did not yet grasp anylogical, holistic sense of whyanimals do not share the samedestiny as humans.Undergraduate“What a travesty upon theinfinite character of God! thisteaching that his fatherly heartin all its austere coldness andhardness was so untouched bythe misfortunes and sorrows ofhis creatures that his tendermercies were not forthcominguntil he saw his blameless Sonbleeding and dying upon thecross of Calvary!” 4:5.6 (60.5)My religious zeal kicked in atage 20. I spent hours arguingwith Christian proselytizers oncampus about the atonementdoctrine. I ignored thepossibility that the atonementdoctrine was one of thecompromises of “keentheologic traders,” 195:1.4(2071.4) made as a nod to theghost cults of evolutionaryreligion, to gain adherents andestablish a solid concept ofredemption. Oh! how manycopies of The Urantia Book didI shove into uninterestedpeople’s hands? How certainam I that not a single one everwas read? I did not yet fullyunderstand how unity amongreligionists may exist even inthe absence of shareddoctrines or texts.Graduate SchoolI drifted from The Urantia Bookfor years, wandering in awilderness of vague new-agemystico-secularism of my ownimagination’s fancy. By mymid-30s this wilderness hadsapped the vitality from life. Ifelt the “frank pessimism”97:8.2 (1070.5) of KingSolomon when in Ecclesiasteshe wrote, of life, “Mere smoke!Vanity of vanities! Utterlymeaningless!”Salaried Career Apex“Even the work of this world, paramount though it is, is notnearly so important as the wayin which you do this work.”39:4.13 (435.6) A renaissanceof The Urantia Book in my lifecoincided with climbing highup the professional careerladder. I subtly incorporatedthe book into my writings andleadership style at work, toapparent positive effect andremuneration. It seemed adecent way to live. Butsomething was gnawing at meeven as I burned the candle atboth ends: in retrospect I cansee that some selfish part ofme was trying to prove myselfbetter than my peers andsuperiors. Ambition shouldhave been a cautionary word, not an impulse word. “And howdangerous ambition canbecome when it is once whollywedded to self-seeking andsupremely motivated by sullenand long-suppressedvengeance!”177:4.10 (1926.3)Midlife“Do not become discouragedby the discovery that you arehuman. . . . Lighten yourburdens of soul by speedilyacquiring a long-distance viewof your destiny, a universeexpansion of your career.”156:5.8 (1739.3) Soon afterage 40 and the “age ofdiscretion” 107:0.7 (1177.1),something changed. It wasalmost tangible in my mind. One day I awoke and found mycareer ambitions hadevaporated. And then late thatyear my father died, leading toa better understanding of myown mortality. I built his eulogyaround “in every dark hour, atevery crossroad in the forwardstruggle, the Spirit of Truth willalways speak, saying, ‘This isthe way.’” 34:7.8 (383.2) Lessfor the funeral audience, perhaps, these words certainlyhad meaning for me. My lifewas at a crossroad.By my 41st birthday I hadlooked into a mirror darkly: theindolence and selfishness Ionce thought I saw incoworkers I now saw in myself.By my 42nd birthday I had quitthat all-too-comfortable job.Now at age 43 I’m among theself-employed, looking foradventure and community.Perhaps someday I’ll betterknow why a SolitaryMessenger uses not one, buttwo exclamation marks tosummarize our ascendingcareers: “What an adventure! What a romance!”112:7.18 (1239.7)Growing up with and (at times)wrestling with The UrantiaBook has defined my life. Ihighly recommend such“effort, struggle, conflict, faith, determination, love, loyalty, and progress” 155:5.11(1729.6) for any sincerestudent.
