These include, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by Johnin the Jordan and the miracle at the wedding feast at Cana. Today Jesus, even as a baby, is manifested as God of the whole world and the universe. The three wise men prostrate themselves before Jesus. This isnot a sign of respect, but of religious worship. Jesus was born in themidst of the Jewish people. The Magi represent the Gentiles’ search forthe Savior. They also represent the entire world and our search formeaning, truth, beauty and perfect love. The Magi come bearing threegifts. Discipleship entails three gifts that we are called to bring toJesus. Gold, a symbol of what we have been entrusted in our lives asstewards, to be shared with others. Frankincense, a symbol of ourworship. Worship each week at Mass allows God to return to the center of our lives, when other things/persons/self seek the center. Myrrh, a symbol of burial ointment. When we live the selfless love of God, we are called to walk through the sometimes uncomfortable pathof letting go of all that keeps us from serving God and others. At the end of the story, the Magi arewarned in a dream not to return to Herod and to depart for their country by another way. When our livesare touched by Jesus and his love, we allow God to transform us and send us in a different path – the pathof intentional discipleship, and learn to lean on God.Fr. The worker is transported to a farm, where her actual salary is reduced to, say, 8per hour. Then she learns that most or all of her salary is beingseized by the employer to pay for her airfare as well as her rent. And she worries about complaining to law enforcement becauseher employer has confiscated her passport. This is one of the many scenarios that three Northeasternprofessors will be researching as part of an investigation ofhuman trafficking in U.S. agriculture. They intend to map andevaluate the human supply chains to determine the key areas ofvulnerability, with the goal of engineering ways to disrupt thosetrafficking systems, over the course of a three-year study. Theyhope to create models of disruption that can be applied to othersectors of human trafficking, which is estimated to victimizemore than 24 million people worldwide.“There is a fallacy that trafficking is happening in someforeign place,” says Bhimani, a visiting assistant professor inthe D’Amore-McKim School of Business. “It’s happening inour local areas, across our country, across the world. And weare all connected to it.”Studies of human trafficking tend to focus on its productsand services—including food, clothes, and sex. But the Northeastern researchers are taking a different approach by focusingon the human supply chain and those who are victimized by it.“We’re kind of flipping it and looking atthe other side,” says Kayse Maass, anassistant professor in the College ofEngineering. “We’re saying, how did thehuman beings get from the point of whereverthey’re originating to the point of exploitation? And how do we break the supplychain?”Their research, funded by a 574,000 grant fromthe National Science Foundation to investigate humantrafficking in American agriculture.EpiphanySaturday, Jan 11, 9—11AMWe arrive at church 8:15,volunteer from 9 – 11am,and be home by 12:15, byway of Panera in Short Hills.Anyone wishing to attend mustPlease contact either Psomi or Payton McGarry at peytonmcgarry@chatham-nj.org.January 5thThis Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, theday Christians believe the wise travelers or Magi visitedJesus, bringinggold, frankincenseand myrrh. Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson “Tis the season” of beautifully wrapped boxes encasing treasures specially chosen bythe givers. They are meant to express many things, above all love, but also friendship, forgiveness for perceived failures, or just plain joy for the present and the future.“Tis the season” for receiving gifts, presumably given by loved ones or recent acquaintances, or even perhaps a co-worker from the wider reaches of our “people circle”wishing to acquire or strengthen a relationship. Or they may be expressions of thanksfor favors received.“Tis the season” of a brand new year, its number 2020 often used to define perfecteyesight, thereby giving a hint that this may be the perfect year to look for a “newvision” to permeate our outlook.“Tis the season” of Winter’s apex, when ever so slowly the daylight lasts longer witheach new day, calling for us to live the hope we invest in Spring.“Tis the season” above all to recognize that Jesus Christ is Himself our greatest gift. His unchanging love for us is no prisoner of time or whim. He is “the Light of theWorld” for all men and women anywhere and everywhere.“Tis the season,” finally, of Epiphany, which is Christmas for many Eastern Christians. That marks the time when Christ burst out of the confines of a Bethlehem stableto be a Gift, beautifully wrapped but eager to be opened for all nations. All of this expanded meaning for the season underscores why we love it as being sospecial. True, it shakes us up a bit, especially if we have commercialized it, or limitedits invitation to love God and our neighbor, or unconsciously made our Christianity intosome kind of private possession, not to be shared with people who don’t look like us orspeak our language. It tells us each year that we share this blue ball we live in withbillions of others, all created by the one God and Father. There are no strangers here. The poets of our world have a way of stating the truth that makes us pause and rehearsetheir words with our inner ears. We need them more desperately than we sometimesacknowledge. They open us up on this Epiphany day so that we can ponder andgrow. Here is one of them with the lilting name of Edna St. Vincent Millay. This iswhat she wrote:“The world stands out on either side,No wider than the heart is wide.Above the world is stretched the sky,No higher than the soul is high.”Peace to you and yours this New Year of the Lord 2020!Page 9 - 603 Corpus Christi
