THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY: JANUARY 20, 2019The Clergy’sCorner“Yes, He Did It Again! /Do You Feel Crappy Enough for Jesus?”by The Rev. Nathanael Saint-PierreI hate it when I have to tell you a story as if thestory of the Bible is not enough to stand by itselfand stir your attention, but a good joke is always agood joke and maybe if I make you laugh youwon’t take it as personal when I get to the seriousbusiness. There was a time when a priest, who had the badhabit of drinking, put a case of Poland Spring water in the trunk of his car and was driving fromConnecticut to Poughkeepsie. Smart priest, he put red wine in thosewater bottles, hoping that he would make this trip with enough“fuel” to get there. When his driving became erratic, a police officerwho happened to be observing the car swerving left and right, put hissiren on, followed him, and finally stopped him. When he asked thepriest to lower his window and hand over his driver’s license and registration, the police officer could smell the alcohol on him but alsorealized he was a man of God. So, he asked him to step out of the vehicle and open the trunk of his car for a routine check. The priest followed the orders of the officer and popped the trunk. The police officer looked in the trunk, found the case of water, and went to thepriest, asking him, “Do you know that it is illegal to be travelling withopen wine bottles in the trunk of your car?” The priest looked totallysurprised. “What are you talking about?”, he replied. So, the policeofficer took one bottle, unscrewed the cap which was not locked andproceeded to show the priest that it was wine and not water, hopingthat the priest would admit that he was drunk and violating the law.But the priest did not; instead, with the same surprised look, he saidto the police office: “My son, he did it again!”Jesus performed his first miracle at the wedding in Cana by changingwater into wine. What, according to you, is hidden behind this miracle? You won’t know, if you don’t come to church Sunday or if you are notfollowing the livestream on Facebook. There is always something to celebrate; when we give Jesus a pieceof crap, he can turn it into something unexpected. That’s the powerof love.2

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer AThe Second Sunday after the Epiphany:Year C, RCLJanuary 20, 2019THE COLLECTThe Second Sunday after the Epiphany:pg. 215Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world:Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shinewith the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, andobeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who withyou and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.THE FIRST READINGIsaiah 62:1-5God sends his Son for the love of his people, to show by his care and tenderness the precious affectionhe holds for humanity, as a groom and bride long for and love one another.A reading (lesson) from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah:For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory;and you shall be called by a new namethat the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate;but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,and your land Married;for the LORD delights in you,and your land shall be married.2

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer AThe Second Sunday after the Epiphany:Year C, RCLJanuary 20, 2019For as a young man marries a young woman,so shall your builder marry you,and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,so shall your God rejoice over you.Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s peopleAll Thanks be to GodTHE RESPONSEPsalm 36:5-10Dixit injustusBCP Pg. 6325Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, *and your faithfulness to the clouds.6Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; *you save both man and beast, O LORD.7How priceless is your love, O God! *your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.8They feast upon the abundance of your house; *you give them drink from the river of your delights.9For with you is the well of life, *and in your light we see light.10Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, *and your favor to those who are true of heart.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.3

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer AThe Second Sunday after the Epiphany:Year C, RCLJanuary 20, 2019THE EPISTLE1 Corinthians 12:1-11In discerning God’s work in the church, we are to become familiar with his voice and his way ofbeing, that as his hands work out various missions, we may recognize his ministry among us.A reading (lesson) from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians:Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to beuninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and ledastray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand thatno one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no onecan say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties ofservices, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is thesame God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given themanifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through theSpirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledgeaccording to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to anothergifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to anotherprophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds oftongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated byone and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spiritchooses.Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s peopleAllThanks be to God.SEQUENCE HYMN#114 (LEVAS)EVERY TIME I FEEL THE SPIRIT (2)The Celebrant says to the peopleAllGod be with you.And also with you.4

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer AThe Second Sunday after the Epiphany:Year C, RCLJanuary 20, 2019THE HOLY GOSPELJohn 2:1-11Jesus cannot keep his silence any longer, his first miracle makes plenty. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to JohnAllGlory to you, Lord ChristOn the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother ofJesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hourhas not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars withwater." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw someout, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tastedthe water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (thoughthe servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called thebridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then theinferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the goodwine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, andrevealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.The Gospel of the LordAll Praise to you, Lord ChristSEQUENCE HYMN#114 (LEVAS)EVERYTIME I FEEL THE SPIRIT (2)5
