From the Executive DirectorDear Friends,Welcome to the DorchesterCenter for the Arts!For nearly five decades now,DCA has been leading the wayas the major arts provider forDorchester County, advancingopportunities for all age groupsand supporting artists young,old and in-between. In 2020,DCA will celebrate its 50thAnniversary. What an incrediblemilestone! Multiple generations have been impactedby the arts at DCA, and thousands have come throughthe doors on the quest to discover their inner artist.In the past two years alone, over 25,000 people haveexperienced the arts at DCA.The DCA art community inspires creativity andempowers artists at all levels. Artful Interest GroupsFiber FridaysJoin the fiber group on Friday mornings. It’s much more fun toshare your ideas and experiences so bring whatever projectyou are working on, from knitting to quilting to rug hookingto needlepoint, all are welcome. This group is facilitated byadvanced needle artist Windy Karpavage who is always willingto offer help. ClassesStained Glass Class with Jan BoettgerChallenge yourself and try something newthis year. If you’ve ever admired a stainedglass window and marveled as sunrayspassed through its brightly colored panels,try making one yourself. Anyone can learnthe art of creating beautiful stained glassplaques and panels. Detailed instructionsinclude: design, cutting, foiling, and soldering.This class is geared toward beginner andintermediate students but more advancedstudents are welcome. Additionalclay can be ordered at the student’s expense.Participants must provide specialty glazes,hand tools, towels and plastic to cover theprojects. Ceramics pieces should be averagesize, not exceeding 14” x 14” x 14” unlessapproved. The Art of Screen Painting with John IampieriA three hour workshop where you’ll createan historically accurate screen like thosedeveloped in Old Baltimore back in 1913.These screens created privacy for row houseowners. Magically, the painting on one sideof the screen is visible to the street but onlythe people inside the room can see throughthe screen. Fun & Funky Furniture with Terri GriffinThis two-day workshop will teach the art ofup-cycling furniture. Through the magic ofyour ideas, paint, glue and other materialswill transform a shabby old piece of furnitureinto a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Studentslearn how to decoupage and embellishwith a variety of items, then seal the piecewith polyurethane so the piece will last alifetime and more. ProgramsTeen Poetry Workshop (Age 13-18)Grace Cavalieri, Maryland’s 10th PoetLaureate’s Workshop on Writing Poetry.Tell your story through poetry. This courseinvolves talks, prompts and writing on thespot. “We don’t make poems as instant relics,but rather access the ideas always availableto us.” The students will learn methods tojump start poems at home. Please bringwriting materials to the workshop. Grace willrecord each poet with at least a few of theirnew lines created, to make a podcast of theevent.For those under 18 years of age, pleasebring signed permission slips which will befurnished at registration so that photos maybe taken and used by the Maryland StateArts Council.Children’s Tales Told, Dance and Sing along withStoryteller Granddaddy, Walter Jones (Age 3-10)Granddaddy is a musical storyteller andsome-what of a pied piper. Instructor BiosJan BoettgerJan started by taking a glass class at DCA under the instruction ofBill Wise, a teacher at the center in the 80’s. When Bill retired, Jancontinued to produce her sparkling images as well as teach the artof stained glass. Jan’s love for working in glass and teaching thecraft shows in both her students’ work and her own. When askedJan says, “My greatest joy over the years has been the variety ofstudents I have taught and the pride these students have for thebeautiful pieces they created.” Much of Jan’s work can be seen invarious buildings around the shore.Grace CavalieriGrace is an American poet, playwright and radio host of “The Poet andthe Poem from the Library of Congress. In 2019 she was appointed the10th Poet Laureate of Maryland. Grace has published 24 books andchapbooks of poetry, written and produced 26 plays and texts for 2operas. She has co-founded or founded several publishing houses andpresses and operates a small press where she is very active. She hasmost recently won an appropriation of 1,050,000 made available forthe 13 most distinguished Poets Laureates in America. He is multi talented and hasstudied the fine arts of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture,ceramics, and graphic design at various art schools across thecountry. Terri GriffinRe-cycled furniture is Terri’s passion. Being able to save an oldworn piece and turn it into a beautiful whimsical piece of furnitureis her mission. She creates useful unique furniture made fromvarious papers, dried leaves, foil and fabric and loves to share herknowledge and inspire whimsy within her students. Windy KarpavageWindy is a fiber artist and owner of Kaire’je Studios, a fiber arts retailbusiness on Taylor’s Island that carries high quality and unusualfibers and materials. Windy is passionate about knitting and feltingand is familiar with many fiber art forms. She has worked as a testknitter for a knitwear designer where she perfected fine finishingdetails. Paul Lewis is an Eastern Shore singer and song writer. He isa graduate of St. Mary’s College in Southern Maryland where hestudied song creation and lyrics writing. It is because of her enthusiasm and love of teaching; she isoften seen with Girl Scouts enthusiastically trailing behind her. Oneof her passions is creating pysanky eggs. These Ukrainian craftedbatik painted eggs are a specialty of Cheryl’s that she is happy toshare with all.Maggii SarfatyMaggii Sarfaty studied fine art at the Maryland Institute College ofArt. Growing up along the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland instilled alove of the water and all things coastal. In 1990 Maggii embarkedon her career as a muralist and faux finisher with work featured inWomen’s Day, Traditional Home and several regional publications.She works in watercolor, gauche and oil. Warren SaundersWarren is a master decoy carver born and raised on a farm inDorchester County. Warren spent his early life studying waterfowl intheir natural surroundings. Warren studied with noted carvers overthe years and has become one of the noted experts in his craft. Heparticipates in exhibitions and shows throughout the easternUnited States. He became an Open Class Carver over 22 years agoand was notified by the international Wood Carver’s Associationcongratulating him on being amongst the top 120 top carvers inthe country. She started her music career inBaltimore singing with her father in various venues. She learned pianoat an early age and has always been happy to share her talents withothers. You can often find Maris at DCA hosting Open Mic on finalFridays where she has also performed on her own and with friendsin concert.Barbara ZuehlkeBarbara Zuehlke is an award winning Eastern Shore artist. Sheworks in various mediums from serigraph to oil, focusing primarilyon watercolor. Using wet pigment on wet paper (wet on wet),Barbara creates a softness and flow that is exciting when combinedwith the sharp, clean edges of working on dry paper.
