While the Corgi Liberatortoys were widely available across the country, the Jotastar and Blue Box items were lesswidely distributed and are rarer as a result. The guide, and this update, in additionto the original retail price, will where possible, indicate the rarity of an item, in a near mintcondition. Generally this means that allpackaging is intact and crease free, any‘blister’ packs have not yellowed with age orsplit, all print items are flat and crease free andwithout missing or damaged pages, allmetallic items are not subject to rust or othercorrosion, badges are scratch free, allmechanisms work and clothing is unwornand should not be faded. As the market for Blake’s 7 items issomewhat limited, with the rarer items onlycoming up for sale very infrequently, theguide and this update do not seek todetermine the current market value of anitem. Similar items on various internetauction sites can sell at large pricedifferentials. Accordingly this update willgrade each item as follows:

2 RARITY GUIDEFreely available.Limited availability in nearmint condition.Rare.Extremely rare in near mintcondition.Extremely rare, with orwithout packaging.CONSISTENCYThe logo seen on screen for the first threeseasons and indeed the revised logo for thefourth season referred to ‘Blakes 7’ without anapostrophe. While grammatically incorrectthis has been taken as the name of the series. This creates a problem when referring tomerchandise as while most licensed productwill display the series logo, when in printformat, the show is commonly referred to as‘Blake’s 7.’ As an example, Trevor Hoyle’ssecond novelization has the series logo on thefront cover (so no apostrophe) and thesubtitle ‘Project Avalon.’ On the spinehowever the book is titled ‘Blake’s 7 ProjectAvalon.’For consistency, this guide will includethe apostrophe and the series and associatedmerchandise will be referenced as ‘Blake’s 7.’The production code for the first seriesof Blake’s 7 was ‘Season A’ with thealphabetical code continuing through seasonsB and C, with the final season being season D.Despite reference to ‘seasons’ in BBC internaldocuments, the scripts themselves referred to‘series,’ even though in the United Kingdomthe norm is to refer to the show as a series, with each run of episodes being a season.Merchandise however, when referring toa particular season of Blake’s 7, refers toseasons one through four. While technicallyincorrect, the guide and this update refers toeach run of thirteen episodes as seasons listednumerically rather than alphabetically.CRITERIAThe merchandise guide sought to fullycatalogue all professionally producedBlake’s 7 merchandise, both licensed andunlicensed. The general rule of thumb was that if anitem was made available to the public at largethen this would be included, while itemsprimarily distributed by fan clubs would not.Having said that, I included some items thatdidn’t meet this strict criteria, and additionalexamples appear in this update.INTRODUCTIONSince the Merchandise Guide went to printadditional material has come to lightprimarily thanks to Jackie Emery, Diane Gies,Shaqui Le Vesconte, and Jon Preddle. Ratherthan wait for a second edition of the guide,David J Howe and Stephen James Walker ofTelos supported the idea of a free PDF update,to disseminate this new information asquickly as possible to Blake’s 7 fans. This has also afforded me theopportunity to bend the rules of the criteriasomewhat to include more fan produceditems. The most commented upon omissionwas fan produced t-shirts and this update listssome but by no means all of them. The advent of desktop publishing movedfanzines away from grainy black & whitephotocopies, into shiny, professional qualitymagazines, but of course if one simply wantsto read a good Blake’s 7 story, you don’t

3 INTRODUCTIONnecessarily need the highest productionvalues. This update still doesn’t include fanzinesbut if you are inclined to go searching on theinternet some personal favorites are Downand Unsafe, Horizon (the magazine, not to beconfused with the Horizon newsletter, although both are excellent), The HorizonInterviews, Oracle (a one-shot informationguide on the series), Orbit, Tarial Cell (twovolumes - an alphabetical directory to the firsttwo seasons of the series), Scorpio Attack,Slave, Standard By Seven, and Star One(which can be downloaded as a PDF file athttp://blakes7starone.wordpress.com/). Issue49 of Past Perfect (January 2012) contains aten page review of the first season. This list isby no means exhaustive. There are hundredsof terrific fanzines just waiting for you todiscover them.Issue 3 of Star One (published March2012) contains an excellent article on theBlake’s 7 annuals by Shaqui Le Vesconte, andis highly recommended.Fan club newsletters fall outside thescope of the guide and this update. Thesewere primarily aimed at the club’smembership and although some found theirway into specialty stores, such as 10th Planet,Forbidden Planet and Galaxy 4, these were theexception rather than the rule. That said, theyprovide a fascinating glimpse into fandom atthe time, and many contain terrific interviews. The Horizon newsletter was professionallyprinted with effect from issue 26, and they canbe found from time-to-time on the variousinternet auction sites. This update includes new items that werepreviously unknown to me, and providesadditional facts on listed items that came tolight after the guide went to print. Thanks tomany eagle-eyed readers errors that crept intothe Merchandise Guide are corrected. Thebook is brought up-to-date with items thathave been released by 30 June 2012, andmerchandise that is scheduled for release (ina separate section). The format of this update has allowed forfull listings of the Gauda Prime artwork(SPP-010), and the Push Merchandising tshirts (CTS-007) in the appendices. Thepromotional artwork for Blake’s 7 - A MarvelMonthly is reprinted in Appendix A, andhopefully no longer strains the eye.It has been pointed out that thepackaging of the Argentinean toys listed inthe guide is more contemporary than if theseitems had been produced in the eighties ornineties, and the Argentinean Trading Cards(STR-002) have been confirmed as bootlegs. The ensuing discussion has produced onedelightful piece of trivia. When Blake’s 7 wasshown in Columbia in 1987/1988 it was calledLos Siete Corsarios de Blackes - The SevenPirates of Blake.Another non-merchandise piece ofinformation came courtesy of Jon Preddle.Zimbabwe broadcast the series from 1 January1981. Unusually, it was in black & white as thestation didn’t start colour broadcasts until1984.I apologize in advance if your mostcherished item still does not appear, butplease feel free to contact me to let me knowof the item, and if you have a photo you cansend so much the better.Enjoy!Mark B OliverJune 2012

It was recorded by the Sioux CityBoys Club. In response to an inquiry from ShaquiLe Vesconte, Mike Wilson of the group responded:‘We chose to do Blake’s 7 because growingup in the eighties this was an iconic bit of UK scifi. It was up there with Doctor Who as in theparticular BBC style of drama and fiction (wonkysets dodgy make up but yet still believable). Thetheme tune to both these series wereclassicsso when asked to do the projectBlake’s 7 wasone where we thought we could really gototown on. There has already been quite a fewversions of the Doctor Who theme tune so to dosomething that hasn’t been tackled was the rightdecision. We wanted to keep the classic vibe ofthe originalBlake’s 7 theme but also wanted toportray that ‘70s electronica Jean Michel Jarrestyle vibe.’A T H - 026

The annual was otherwiseidentical to the regular version, even having thesame SBN.It is likely that this alternate version wasproduced for overseas markets. This theory isstrengthened by the fact that in Australasia theannuals without 1980 are far more prevalent, andsimilarly there are also two versions of the 1980Doctor Who Annual. This annual, and Trevor Hoyle’s bookBlake’s 7: A Novel (BNO-001), were on sale in NewZealand in 1979, long before the series wasbroadcast. ‘The Way Back’ first aired on19 February 1980, with ‘Orac’ concluding the initialrun on 13 May 1980. Season 2 was shown laterthat year, season 3 in the summer of 1981, andseason 4 materialized on 2 January 1985.Glenn Rix illustrated three stories: ‘Planet ofNo Escape,’ ‘Sabotage!,’ and ‘A Task for Bondor,’as well as the features ‘UFO’ (pages 14-15), ‘SpaceFacts’ (page 25), and ‘Cygnus’ (page 30).
