Mission: The King County Bar Foundation is dedicated to ensuring access to thelegal system and encouraging diversity in the legal profession.Vision:A legal system open to and representative of every member of our community.Message from the PresidentDear Friends and Colleagues:2006-2007 was a great year for the King County Bar Foundation. The highlight of our year was the Breakfast withChampions. Bob Edwards, of NPR fame, spoke at what has become a signature event for the King County legal sector:an opportunity for lawyers, judges and their friends to gather together for collegiality and to hear an engaging speaker.Over the years, the Breakfast has featured Gloria Steinem, Sherman Alexie and Paul Rusesabagina, the real-life managerof the Hotel Rwanda. In 2008, the Foundation will continue its tradition of presenting interesting speakers when bestselling author Scott Turow will speak on April 14, 2008. Save the date!In 2006-2007, 1,097,000.00 was raised by the King County Bar Foundation. These funds were used to support ourefforts to increase diversity in the legal profession and provide legal assistance to persons in need.For the second year in a row, the Foundation granted 125,000 to the University of Washington and Seattle UniversityLaw Schools for minority law student scholarships. At our annual Bar Scholars Reception, I was able to meet many ofthe scholarship recipients and I can attest that they are worthy of our support and will be wonderful additions to the legalcommunity when they graduateYour support of our Community Legal Services Programs enabled over 1,600 attorneys to volunteer 23,689 hours of probono legal services, worth more than 6,600,000. This means 9,560 people in King County received legal assistancewho may have had to go without, were it not for the involvement of our donors and volunteers.Despite our successful year, the unmet need for legal services and support for efforts to increase diversity remainssubstantial. We pledge to build on this year’s achievements and carry on our efforts to reach new records incontributions and personal commitments of time and talent in the years ahead. Breakfast With ChampionsNearly 1,000 attorneys, judges, and friends of the King County Bar Foundation attended theseventh annual Breakfast With Champions on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Westin Hotel indowntown Seattle. Over 300,000 dollars was raised in support of the Foundation’s pro bonoand diversity programs.Bob Edwards, National Public Radio’s Morning Edition host for 25 years and current host ofXM Satellite Radio’s flagship program The Bob Edwards Show, delivered the keynote address.Mr. Edwards’ words inspired the audience with a renewed passion for pro bono service bycommenting on the remarkable career of Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, consideredby many to be the grandfather of pro bono. Mr. Edwards strongly encouraged Breakfast gueststo get involved in civil legal aid service by volunteering their time and by donating to theFoundation.The program included a special highlight of the Foundation’s Minority Law Student ScholarshipProgram. Every year, the Foundation grants funds to the University of Washington and SeattleUniversity law schools to assist both law schools with attracting outstanding students of color.Last year, the Foundation awarded 125,000 for this purpose. Over 500 students have benefitedfrom the Foundation’s scholarship program and more than 50% of these students practice inthe King County area.Breakfast guests, encouraged by the words of Foundation trustees Megan Wells and PaulMutty, made contributions in support of the Foundation’s pro bono legal services and diversityprograms. Last year, every dollar received by the Foundation resulted in 8.30 in legal servicesor helped leverage an education for a minority law school student.The Champion of Justice and the Champion of Diversity awards were presented to Fredric C. Tausend by the Honorable Ronald C.Cox. Increasing Diversity in the Legal ProfessionKCBF is committed to working at all steps of the “pipeline” - from high school tothe bar - to increase diversity in King County’s law offices and courtrooms.The Future of the Law Institute (FLI)FLI gives minority and economically disadvantaged high school students encouragementand resources to pursue a career in law. Through an exciting two-day program ofworkshops, career panels, lunch with judges, a mock trial and more, students areintroduced to the profession. The two-day event is followed by a year-long mentorshipprogram matching FLI students with lawyers, judges, and law students committed tosharing their experience. FLI also provides summer internship opportunities in law firmsand courtrooms. Additionally, since 2003 FLI has distributed 7,000 in scholarships toalumni attending two and four year universities.Each year over 100 volunteers from the bar, bench and law schools participate in FLI programming. FLI has won awards for excellence and innovation from the American Bar Association, Minority Corporate Counsel Association, LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell LegalFellowship Foundation, and Asian Bar Association of Washington.KCBF Minority Law Student ScholarshipsKCBF is the largest single provider of minority law studentscholarships in Washington. In 2006-2007, KCBF distributed 125,000 to the University of Washington and Seattle Universitylaw schools for this purpose. Ensuring Access to JusticeDomestic Revision SquadNewcomers Resource ProjectThis project provides direct representation to domesticviolence survivors who seek reconsideration or revisionwhen DV Protection orders are erroneously denied.Newcomers Resource Project provides communityworkshops and free legal services on non-immigration civilissues to newcomers, immigrants, and refugees who residein King County. Newcomers Resource Project partners withCasa Latina to assist workers with wage claimsFamily Law MentorFamily Law Mentor provides free, direct representation tolow-income residents in contested dissolution or custodycases where children are at risk.Kinship Care Solutions ProjectThis project assists low-income relatives and others obtainlegal custody of children in their care. Volunteer attorneysrepresent the caretakers in third party custody proceedings.Homeless ProjectLegal Services for the Homelessprovides free advice and assistancewith legal problems to individualswho are homeless and currently usingshelter services. Several law firms andKing County Civil Division DeputyProsecutors each sponsor a local shelter.Family Law Self-Help PlusSelf-Help Plus assists low andmoderate-income King Countyresidents file for uncontesteddissolution, child supportmodifications, and minor parentingplan modifications. Service isprovided on a sliding fee scale basedon client income.Housing Justice ProjectHJP provides free legal assistance toKing County residents facing the loss ofhousing due to an eviction. The programis located in Room W314 near theExParte department of the King CountyCourthouse in Seattle and Room 1281at the Regional Justice Center in Kent-- open Monday-Friday 8:00-10:30 AM.The Seattle office is also open from 4:006:00 PM on Monday and Wednesdayafternoons.Volunteer Legal ServicesVLS provides free directrepresentation to low-income KingCounty residents on a broad array ofcivil legal issues including housing,debt, consumer, wills and estateplanning, special education, publicbenefits, real estate foreclosures andpredatory lending.Neighborhood Legal Clinics27 Neighborhood Legal Clinics offer free legal half-hourconsultations on a wide range of issues to King Countyresidents, regardless of income.
