This helps give the New King James Version the appealof the original, while updating important parts of the scriptures as well.

Genesis1In the beginning God created theheavens and the earth.2The earth was without form, and void;and darkness was on the face of thedeep. And the Spirit of God washovering over the face of the waters.3Then God said, "Let there be light"; andthere was light.4And God saw the light, that it was good;and God divided the light from thedarkness.5God called the light Day, and thedarkness He called Night. So theevening and the morning were the firstday.6Then God said, "Let there be afirmament in the midst of the waters,and let it divide the waters from thewaters."7Thus God made the firmament, anddivided the waters which were under thefirmament from the waters which wereabove the firmament; and it was so.8And God called the firmament Heaven.So the evening and the morning werethe second day.9Then God said, "Let the waters underthe heavens be gathered together intoone place, and let the dry land appear";and it was so.10And God called the dry land Earth, andthe gathering together of the waters Hecalled Seas. And God saw that it wasgood.11Then God said, "Let the earth bringforth grass, the herb that yields seed,and the fruit tree that yields fruitaccording to its kind, whose seed is initself, on the earth"; and it was so.12And the earth brought forth grass, theherb that yields seed according to itskind, and the tree that yields fruit, whoseseed is in itself according to its kind.And God saw that it was good.13So the evening and the morning werethe third day.14Then God said, "Let there be lights inthe firmament of the heavens to dividethe day from the night; and let them befor signs and seasons, and for days andyears;15and let them be for lights in thefirmament of the heavens to give lighton the earth"; and it was so.16Then God made two great lights: thegreater light to rule the day, and thelesser light to rule the night. He madethe stars also.17God set them in the firmament of theheavens to give light on the earth,

18and to rule over the day and over thenight, and to divide the light from thedarkness. And God saw that it was good.19So the evening and the morning werethe fourth day.20Then God said, "Let the watersabound with an abundance of livingcreatures, and let birds fly above theearth across the face of the firmament ofthe heavens."21So God created great sea creaturesand every living thing that moves, withwhich the waters abounded, accordingto their kind, and every winged birdaccording to its kind. And God saw thatit was good.22And God blessed them, saying, "Befruitful and multiply, and fill the waters inthe seas, and let birds multiply on theearth."the sea, over the birds of the air, andover the cattle, over all the earth andover every creeping thing that creeps onthe earth."27So God created man in His ownimage; in the image of God He createdhim; male and female He created them.28Then God blessed them, and God saidto them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill theearth and subdue it; have dominion overthe fish of the sea, over the birds of theair, and over every living thing thatmoves on the earth."29And God said, "See, I have given youevery herb that yields seed which is onthe face of all the earth, and every treewhose fruit yields seed; to you it shall befor food.30So the evening and the morning werethe fifth day.Also, to every beast of the earth, toevery bird of the air, and to everythingthat creeps on the earth, in which thereis life, I have given every green herb forfood"; and it was so.243123Then God said, "Let the earth bringforth the living creature according to itskind: cattle and creeping thing and beastof the earth, each according to its kind";and it was so.25And God made the beast of the earthaccording to its kind, cattle according toits kind, and everything that creeps onthe earth according to its kind. And Godsaw that it was good.26Then God said, "Let Us make man inOur image, according to Our likeness;let them have dominion over the fish ofThen God saw everything that He hadmade, and indeed it was very good. Sothe evening and the morning were thesixth day.2Thus the heavens and the earth, andall the host of them, were finished.2And on the seventh day God ended Hiswork which He had done, and He restedon the seventh day from all His workwhich He had done.

3Then God blessed the seventh day andsanctified it, because in it He restedfrom all His work which God had createdand made.4This is the history of the heavens andthe earth when they were created, in theday that the LORD God made the earthand the heavens,5before any plant of the field was in theearth and before any herb of the fieldhad grown. For the LORD God had notcaused it to rain on the earth, and therewas no man to till the ground;6but a mist went up from the earth andwatered the whole face of the ground.7And the LORD God formed man of thedust of the ground, and breathed into hisnostrils the breath of life; and manbecame a living being.8The LORD God planted a gardeneastward in Eden, and there He put theman whom He had formed.9And out of the ground the LORD Godmade every tree grow that is pleasant tothe sight and good for food. The tree oflife was also in the midst of the garden,and the tree of the knowledge of goodand evil.10Now a river went out of Eden to waterthe garden, and from there it parted andbecame four riverheads.11The name of the first is Pishon; it is theone which skirts the whole land ofHavilah, where there is gold.12And the gold of that land is good.Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.13The name of the second river is Gihon;it is the one which goes around thewhole land of Cush.14The name of the third river is Hiddekel;it is the one which goes toward the eastof Assyria. The fourth river is theEuphrates.15Then the LORD God took the man andput him in the garden of Eden to tendand keep it.16And the LORD God commanded theman, saying, "Of every tree of thegarden you may freely eat;17but of the tree of the knowledge ofgood and evil you shall not eat, for in theday that you eat of it you shall surelydie."18And the LORD God said, "It is notgood that man should be alone; I willmake him a helper comparable to him."19Out of the ground the LORD Godformed every beast of the field andevery bird of the air, and brought themto Adam to see what he would call them.And whatever Adam called each livingcreature, that was its name.20So Adam gave names to all cattle, tothe birds of the air, and to every beast ofthe field. But for Adam there was notfound a helper comparable to him.21And the LORD God caused a deepsleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and

He took one of his ribs, and closed upthe flesh in its place.6Then the rib which the LORD God hadtaken from man He made into a woman,and He brought her to the man.So when the woman saw that the treewas good for food, that it was pleasantto the eyes, and a tree desirable tomake one wise, she took of its fruit andate. She also gave to her husband withher, and he ate.23722And Adam said: "This is now bone ofmy bones And flesh of my flesh; Sheshall be called Woman, Because shewas taken out of Man."Then the eyes of both of them wereopened, and they knew that they werenaked; and they sewed fig re a man shall leave his fatherand mother and be joined to his wife,and they shall become one flesh.25And they were both naked, the manand his wife, and were not ashamed.3Now the serpent was more cunningthan any beast of the field which theLORD God had made. And he said tothe woman, "Has God indeed said, "Youshall not eat of every tree of thegarden'?"2And the woman said to the serpent,"We may eat the fruit of the trees of thegarden;3but of the fruit of the tree which is in themidst of the garden, God has said, "Youshall not eat it, nor shall you touch it,lest you die."'4Then the serpent said to the woman,"You will not surely die.5For God knows that in the day you eatof it your eyes will be opened, and youwill be like God, knowing good and evil."8And they heard the sound of the LORDGod walking in the garden in the cool ofthe day, and Adam and his wife hidthemselves from the presence of theLORD God among the trees of thegarden.9Then the LORD God called to Adamand said to him, "Where are you?"10So he said, "I heard Your voice in thegarden, and I was afraid because I wasnaked; and I hid myself."11And He said, "Who told you that youwere naked? Have you eaten from thetree of which I commanded you that youshould not eat?"12Then the man said, "The womanwhom You gave to be with me, shegave me of the tree, and I ate."13And the LORD God said to the woman,"What is this you have done?" Thewoman said, "The serpent deceived me,and I ate."14So the LORD God said to the serpent:"Because you have done this, You are

cursed more than all cattle, And morethan every beast of the field; On yourbelly you shall go, And you shall eatdust All the days of your life.15And I will put enmity Between you andthe woman, And between your seed andher Seed; He shall bruise your head,And you shall bruise His heel."16To the woman He said: "I will greatlymultiplyyoursorrowandyourconception; In pain you shall bring forthchildren; Your desire shall be for yourhusband, And he shall rule over you."17Then to Adam He said, "Because youhave heeded the voice of your wife, andhave eaten from the tree of which Icommanded you, saying, "You shall noteat of it': "Cursed is the ground for yoursake; In toil you shall eat of it All thedays of your life.18Both thorns and thistles it shall bringforth for you, And you shall eat the herbof the field.19In the sweat of your face you shall eatbread Till you return to the ground, Forout of it you were taken; For dust youare, And to dust you shall return."20And Adam called his wife's name Eve,because she was the mother of all living.21Also for Adam and his wife the LORDGod made tunics of skin, and clothedthem.22Then the LORD God said, "Behold, theman has become like one of Us, toknow good and evil. And now, lest heput out his hand and take also of thetree of life, and eat, and live forever"-23therefore the LORD God sent him outof the garden of Eden to till the groundfrom which he was taken.24So He drove out the man; and Heplaced cherubim at the east of thegarden of Eden, and a flaming swordwhich turned every way, to guard theway to the tree of life.4Now Adam knew Eve his wife, andshe conceived and bore Cain, and said,"I have acquired a man from the LORD."2Then she bore again, this time hisbrother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper ofsheep, but Cain was a tiller of theground.3And in the process of time it came topass that Cain brought an offering of thefruit of the ground to the LORD.4Abel also brought of the firstborn of hisflock and of their fat. And the LORDrespected Abel and his offering,5but He did not respect Cain and hisoffering. And Cain was very angry, andhis countenance fell.6So the LORD said to Cain, "Why areyou angry? And why has yourcountenance fallen?7If you do well, will you not be accepted?And if you do not do well, sin lies at thedoor. And its desire is for you, but youshould rule over it."

8Now Cain talked with Abel his brother;and it came to pass, when they were inthe field, that Cain rose up against Abelhis brother and killed him.And Cain knew his wife, and sheconceived and bore Enoch. And he builta city, and called the name of the cityafter the name of his son--Enoch.918Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where isAbel your brother?" He said, "I do notknow. Am I my brother's keeper?"10And He said, "What have you done?The voice of your brother's blood criesout to Me from the ground.11So now you are cursed from the earth,which has opened its mouth to receiveyour brother's blood from your hand.1217To Enoch was born Irad; and Iradbegot Mehujael, and Mehujael begotMethushael, and Methushael begotLamech.19Then Lamech took for himself twowives: the name of one was Adah, andthe name of the second was Zillah.20And Adah bore Jabal. He was thefather of those who dwell in tents andhave livestock.When you till the ground, it shall nolonger yield its strength to you. A fugitiveand a vagabond you shall be on theearth."His brother's name was Jubal. He wasthe father of all those who play the harpand flute.1322And Cain said to the LORD, "Mypunishment is greater than I can bear!14Surely You have driven me out thisday from the face of the ground; I shallbe hidden from Your face; I shall be afugitive and a vagabond on the earth,and it will happen that anyone who findsme will kill me."15And the LORD said to him, "Therefore,whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall betaken on him sevenfold." And the LORDset a mark on Cain, lest anyone findinghim should kill him.16Then Cain went out from the presenceof the LORD and dwelt in the land ofNod on the east of Eden.21And as for Zillah, she also bore TubalCain, an instructor of every craftsman inbronze and iron. And the sister of TubalCain was Naamah.23Then Lamech said to his wives: "Adahand Zillah, hear my voice; Wives ofLamech, listen to my speech! For I havekilled a man for wounding me, Even ayoung man for hurting me.24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold."25And Adam knew his wife again, andshe bore a son and named him Seth,"For God has appointed another seedfor me instead of Abel, whom Cainkilled."

26And as for Seth, to him also a son wasborn; and he named him Enosh. Thenmen began to call on the name of theLORD.5This is the book of the genealogy of10After he begot Cainan, Enosh livedeight hundred and fifteen years, and hadsons and daughters.11So all the days of Enosh were ninehundred and five years; and he died.12Adam. In the day that God created man,He made him in the likeness of God.Cainan lived seventy years, and begotMahalalel.2He created them male and female, andblessed them and called them Mankindin the day they were created.13After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan livedeight hundred and forty years, and hadsons and daughters.314And Adam lived one hundred and thirtyyears, and begot a son in his ownlikeness, after his image, and namedhim Seth.4After he begot Seth, the days of Adamwere eight hundred years; and he hadsons and daughters.5So all the days that Adam lived werenine hundred and thirty years; and hedied.6Seth lived one hundred and five years,and begot Enosh.7After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eighthundred and seven years, and had sonsand daughters.8So all the days of Seth were ninehundred and twelve years; and he died.9Enosh lived ninety years, and begotCainan.So all the days of Cainan were ninehundred and ten years; and he died.15Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, andbegot Jared.16After he begot Jared, Mahalalel livedeight hundred and thirty years, and hadsons and daughters.17So all the days of Mahalalel were eighthundred and ninety-five years; and hedied.18Jared lived one hundred and sixty-twoyears, and begot Enoch.19After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eighthundred years, and had sons anddaughters.20So all the days of Jared were ninehundred and sixty-two years; and hedied.21Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begotMethuselah.

22After he begot Methuselah, Enochwalked with God three hundred years,and had sons and daughters.23So all the days of Enoch were threehundred and sixty-five years.6Now it came to pass, when menbegan to multiply on the face of theearth, and daughters were born to them,224And Enoch walked with God; and hewas not, for God took him.that the sons of God saw the daughtersof men, that they were beautiful; andthey took wives for themselves of allwhom they chose.253Methuselah lived one hundred andeighty-seven years, and begot Lamech.26After he begot Lamech, Methuselahlived seven hundred and eighty-twoyears, and had sons and daughters.27So all the days of Methuselah werenine hundred and sixty-nine years; andhe died.28Lamech lived one hundred and eightytwo years, and had a son.29And he called his name Noah, saying,"This one will comfort us concerning ourwork and the toil of our hands, becauseof the ground which the LORD hascursed."30After he begot Noah, Lamech lived fivehundred and ninety-five years, and hadsons and daughters.And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall notstrive with man forever, for he is indeedflesh; yet his days shall be one hundredand twenty years."4There were giants on the earth in thosedays, and also afterward, when the sonsof God came in to the daughters of menand they bore children to them. Thosewere the mighty men who were of old,men of renown.5Then the LORD saw thatwickedness of man was great inearth, and that every intent ofthoughts of his heart was onlycontinually.thethetheevil6And the LORD was sorry that He hadmade man on the earth, and He wasgrieved in His heart.731So all the days of Lamech were sevenhundred and seventy-seven years; andhe died.So the LORD said, "I will destroy manwhom I have created from the face ofthe earth, both man and beast, creepingthing and birds of the air, for I am sorrythat I have made them."328And Noah was five hundred years old,and Noah begot Shem, Ham, andJapheth.But Noah found grace in the eyes of theLORD.

9This is the genealogy of Noah. Noahwas a just man, perfect in hisgenerations. Noah walked with God.10And Noah begot three sons: Shem,Ham, and Japheth.11The earth also was corrupt before God,and the earth was filled with violence.your sons, your wife, and your sons'wives with you.19And of every living thing of all fleshyou shall bring two of every sort into theark, to keep them alive with you; theyshall be male and female.2012So God looked upon the earth, andindeed it was corrupt; for all flesh hadcorrupted their way on the earth.Of the birds after their kind, of animalsafter their kind, and of every creepingthing of the earth after its kind, two ofevery kind will come to you to keepthem alive.13And God said to Noah, "The end of allflesh has come before Me, for the earthis filled with violence through them; andbehold, I will destroy them with the earth.21And you shall take for yourself of allfood that is eaten, and you shall gatherit to yourself; and it shall be food for youand for them."1422Make yourself an ark of gopherwood;make rooms in the ark, and cover itinside and outside with pitch.15And this is how you shall make it: Thelength of the ark shall be three hundredcubits, its width fifty cubits, and itsheight thirty cubits.16You shall make a window for the ark,and you shall finish it to a cubit fromabove; and set the door of the ark in itsside. You shall make it with lower,second, and third decks.Thus Noah did; according to all thatGod commanded him, so he did.7Then the LORD said to Noah, "Comeinto the ark, you and all your household,because I have seen that you arerighteous before Me in this generation.2You shall take with you seven each ofevery clean animal, a male and hisfemale; two each of animals that areunclean, a male and his female;317And behold, I Myself am bringingfloodwaters on the earth, to destroy fromunder heaven all flesh in which is thebreath of life; everything that is on theearth shall die.18But I will establish My covenant withyou; and you shall go into the ark--you,also seven each of birds of the air,male and female, to keep the speciesalive on the face of all the earth.4For after seven more days I will cause itto rain on the earth forty days and fortynights, and I will destroy from the face ofthe earth all living things that I havemade."

5And Noah did according to all that theLORD commanded him.6Noah was six hundred years old whenthe floodwaters were on the earth.7So Noah, with his sons, his wife, andhis sons' wives, went into the arkbecause of the waters of the flood.8Of clean animals, of animals that areunclean, of birds, and of everything thatcreeps on the earth,15And they went into the ark to Noah,two by two, of all flesh in which is thebreath of life.16So those that entered, male andfemale of all flesh, went in as God hadcommanded him; and the LORD shuthim in.17Now the flood was on the earth fortydays. The waters increased and lifted upthe ark, and it rose high above the earth.18two by two they went into the ark toNoah, male and female, as God hadcommanded Noah.The waters prevailed and greatlyincreased on the earth, and the arkmoved about on the surface of thewaters.10And it came to pass after seven daysthat the waters of the flood were on theearth.19And the waters prevailed exceedinglyon the earth, and all the high hills underthe whole heaven were covered.11209In the six hundredth year of Noah's life,in the second month, the seventeenthday of the month, on that day all thefountains of the great deep were brokenup, and the windows of heaven wereopened.12And the rain was on the earth fortydays and forty nights.13On the very same day Noah andNoah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth,and Noah's wife and the three wives ofhis sons with them, entered the ark-14they and every beast after its kind, allcattle after their kind, every creepingthing that creeps on the earth after itskind, and every bird after its kind, everybird of every sort.The waters prevailed fifteen cubitsupward, and the mountains werecovered.21And all flesh died that moved on theearth: birds and cattle and beasts andevery creeping thing that creeps on theearth, and every man.22All in whose nostrils was the breath ofthe spirit of life, all that was on the dryland, died.23So He destroyed all living things whichwere on the face of the ground: bothman and cattle, creeping thing and birdof the air. They were destroyed from theearth. Only Noah and those who werewith him in the ark remained alive.

24And the waters prevailed on the earthone hundred and fifty days.8Then God remembered Noah, andevery living thing, and all the animalsthat were with him in the ark. And Godmade a wind to pass over the earth, andthe waters subsided.2The fountains of the deep and thewindows of heaven were also stopped,and the rain from heaven was restrained.3And the waters receded continuallyfrom the earth. At the end of thehundred and fifty days the watersdecreased.4Then the ark rested in the seventhmonth, the seventeenth day of themonth, on the mountains of Ararat.5And the waters decreased continuallyuntil the tenth month. In the tenth month,on the first day of the month, the tops ofthe mountains were seen.6So it came to pass, at the end of fortydays, that Noah opened the window ofthe ark which he had made.7Then he sent out a raven, which keptgoing to and fro until the waters haddried up from the earth.8He also sent out from himself a dove, tosee if the waters had receded from theface of the ground.9But the dove found no resting place forthe sole of her foot, and she returnedinto the ark to him, for the waters wereon the face of the whole earth. So heput out his hand and took her, and drewher into the ark to himself.10And he waited yet another seven days,and again he sent the dove out from theark.11Then the dove came to him in theevening, and behold, a freshly pluckedolive leaf was in her mouth; and Noahknew that the waters had receded fromthe earth.12So he waited yet another seven daysand sent out the dove, which did notreturn again to him anymore.13And it came to pass in the six hundredand first year, in the first month, the firstday of the month, that the waters weredried up from the earth; and Noahremoved the covering of the ark andlooked, and indeed the surface of theground was dry.14And in the second month, on thetwenty-seventh day of the month, theearth was dried.15Then God spoke to Noah, saying,16"Go out of the ark, you and your wife,and your sons and your sons' wives withyou.17Bring out with you every living thing ofall flesh that is with you: birds and cattleand every creeping thing that creeps onthe earth, so that they may abound onthe earth, and be fruitful and multiply onthe earth."

18So Noah went out, and his sons andhis wife and his sons' wives with him.19Every animal, every creeping thing,every bird, and whatever creeps on theearth, according to their families, wentout of the ark.20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD,and took of every clean animal and ofevery clean bird, and offered burntofferings on the altar.21And the LORD smelled a soothingaroma. Then the LORD said in His heart,"I will never again curse the ground forman's sake, although the imagination ofman's heart is evil from his youth; norwill I again destroy every living thing as Ihave done.22"While the earth remains, Seedtimeand harvest, Cold and heat, Winter andsummer, And day and night Shall notcease."5Surely for your lifeblood I will demand areckoning; from the hand of every beastI will require it, and from the hand ofman. From the hand of every man'sbrother I will require the life of man.6"Whoever sheds man's blood, By manhis blood shall be shed; For in the imageof God He made man.7And as for you, be fruitful and multiply;Bring forth abundantly in the earth Andmultiply in it."8Then God spoke to Noah and to hissons with him, saying:9"And as for Me, behold, I establish Mycovenant with you and with yourdescendants after you,10and with every living creature that iswith you: the birds, the cattle, and everybeast of the earth with you, of all that goout of the ark, every beast of the earth.11and said to them: "Be fruitful andmultiply, and fill the earth.Thus I establish My covenant with you:Never again shall all flesh be cut off bythe waters of the flood; never again shallthere be a flood to destroy the earth."2129So God blessed Noah and his sons,And the fear of you and the dread ofyou shall be on every beast of the earth,on every bird of the air, on all that moveon the earth, and on all the fish of thesea. They are given into your hand.3Every moving thing that lives shall befood for you. I have given you all things,even as the green herbs.4But you shall not eat flesh with its life,that is, its blood.And God said: "This is the sign of thecovenant which I make between Me andyou, and every living creature that iswith you, for perpetual generations:13I set My rainbow in the cloud, and itshall be for the sign of the covenantbetween Me and the earth.14It shall be, when I bring a cloud overthe earth, that the rainbow shall be seenin the cloud;

15and I will remember My covenantwhich is between Me and you and everyliving creature of all flesh; the watersshall never again become a flood todestroy all flesh.16The rainbow shall be in the cloud, andI will look on it to remember theeverlasting covenant between God andevery living creature of all flesh that ison the earth."17And God said to Noah, "This is thesign of the covenant which I haveestablished between Me and all fleshthat is on the earth."24So Noah awoke from his wine, andknew what his younger son had done tohim.25Then he said: "Cursed be Canaan; Aservant of servants He shall be to hisbrethren."26And he said: "Blessed be the LORD,The God of Shem, And may Canaan behis servant.27May God enlarge Japheth, And mayhe dwell in the tents of Shem; And mayCanaan be his servant."2818Now the sons of Noah who went out ofthe ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.And Ham was the father of Canaan.19These three were the sons of Noah,and from these the whole earth waspopulated.20And Noah began to be a farmer, andhe planted a vineyard.21Then he drank of the wine and wasdrunk, and became uncovered in histent.22And Ham, the father of Canaan, sawthe nakedness of his father, and told histwo brothers outside.23But Shem and Japheth took a garment,laid it on both their shoulders, and wentbackward and covered the nakedness oftheir father. Their faces were turnedaway, and they did not see their father'snakedness.And Noah lived after the flood threehundred and fifty years.29So all the days of Noah were ninehundred and fifty years; and he died.10Now this is the genealogy of thesons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.And sons were born to them after theflood.2The sons of Japheth were Gomer,Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech,and Tiras.3The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz,Riphath, and Togarmah.4The sons of Javan were Elishah,Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.5From these the coastland peoples ofthe Gentiles were separated into theirlands, everyone according to his

language, according to their families,into their nations.6The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim,Put, and Canaan.7The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah,Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; andthe sons of Raamah were Sheba andDedan.8Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be amighty one on the earth.18the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and theHamathite. Afterward the families of theCanaanites were dispersed.19And the border of the Canaanites wasfrom Sidon as you go toward Gerar, asfar as Gaza; then as you go towardSodom,Gomorrah,Adm
