Regent Jose HernandezBoard of Regents, University of CaliforniaJose Hernandez is the President and ChiefExecutive Officer at Tierra Luna Engineering,LLC, an aerospace company. Mr. Hernandezpreviously served as President of PT Strategiesat PT Capital/PT Strategies from 2013 to 2016.Before that, he was the Executive Director ofStrategic Operations at MEI Technologies from2011 to 2012.as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative, thenuclear nonproliferation arena helping the newlyformed Russian federation establish materials,protection, control and accountability measures,and engaged in work with a commercial partnerthat resulted in the creation of the first full-fielddigital mammography imaging system, used forthe earlier detection of breast cancer.Mr. Hernandez worked at NASA JohnsonSpace Center from 2001 to 2011, where hewas an astronaut, legislative analyst, branchchief and materials research engineer. He wason the STS-128 shuttle mission, during whichhe oversaw the transfer of more than 18,000pounds of equipment between the shuttle andthe International Space Station and helpedwith robotics operations. The STS-128 missiontraveled more than 5.7 million miles in just undertwo weeks.Aside from leading Tierra Luna Engineering, Mr.Hernandez is a vineyard farmer and produceshis own line of wines under the label of TierraLuna Cellars, Inc. He also has a foundationcalled The Jose Hernandez Reaching for theStars Foundation that focuses on awareness ofSTEAM careers for kids in the Central Valley.He also held numerous roles at LawrenceLivermore National Laboratory (LLNL) includingprogram manager and engineer. While at LLNL,he worked in helping develop the X-ray laserHe is a member of the League of United LatinAmerican Citizens and Latinos in Science andEngineering.Mr. Hernandez earned a Master of Sciencedegree in Electronic Engineering, Signals,and Systems from University of California,Santa Barbara and a Bachelor of Science inElectrical Engineering from the University ofthe Pacific. He also holds honorary doctoratedegrees from La Alianza Internacional, AHCASAde Marruecos, Universidad Michoacande San Nicolás de Hidalgo, MarymountUniversity, University of Laverne, UniversidadPopular Autonoma del Estado deMexico, Universidad Autonoma del Estadode Puebla, National Hispanic University,and University of the Pacific.He was appointed as a Regent in August 2021by Governor Newsom to a term expiring in 2033.Chancellor Garydeveloped nationally recognized programs thatattract, mentor and retain underrepresentedgroups in the STEM fields of science,technology, engineering and math.In 2015, President Obama honored him withthe Presidential Award for Excellence in STEMMentoring, and in 2021, Chancellor May wasawarded a Lifetime Mentor Award from theAmerican Association for the Advancement ofScience and an honorary doctorate from theGeorgia Institute of Technology.Chan cellor Gary S. He authored more than 200 technicalpublications, contributed to 15 books and holdsa patent related to this work. In 2010, he wasnamed “outstanding engineering alumnus” ofUC Berkeley, where he earned his master’s andPh.D. degrees in electrical engineering andcomputer science.In September 2018, May was inducted tothe National Academy of Engineering for hisS. Maysuccess in growing diversity and his innovationsin semiconductor manufacturing.In April 2018, he launched Aggie Square inpartnership with the City of Sacramento to spureconomic growth and help create jobs at avariety of education levels. He and SacramentoMayor Darrell Steinberg were recognized witha Leadership Award from the Association ofUniversity Research Parks for creating thisunique partnership.May was recognized by the Sacramento KingsFoundation as a 2021 Dream All Star, for hispositive impact on the Sacramento region andcommitment to championing initiatives thatsupport opportunities for the Black community.His vision as our seventh chancellor is to leadthe university to new heights in academicexcellence, inclusion, public service and upwardmobility for students from all backgrounds.

Dr. Pablo G. ReguerínVice Chancellor for Student Affairs,University of California Daviscommitted professional staff. He oversees abudget of 260 million dollars.Dr Reguerín’s leadership team includes anassociate vice chancellor for health, wellness,and divisional resources; an associate vicechancellor for student housing, dining anddivisional operations; and an associate vicechancellor for student life, campus communityand retention services.As Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at UCDavis Dr. Pablo G. Reguerín is responsible foroversight of Student Affairs partnerships andprograms that promote student learning andadvance student success, personal growth andlifelong learning.The Division of Student Affairs encompassesnearly 30 defined departments withapproximately 2.5 million square feet of spaceunder management. He serves as principal investigator onthree U.S. Department of Education HispanicServing Institution, or HSI, Title V and Title IIIgrants, totaling more than 16 million.Throughout his career, Reguerín has also beenresponsible for managing a wide array of fundsources within the UC system, including stategeneral funds; student services fees; gift/donorfunds; endowments; private, state and federalgrants; and auxiliary revenue and studentmeasure/referenda fees.Renetta Garrison TullVice Chancellor of Diversity, Equity and InclusionDr. Renetta Garrison Tull is Vice Chancellor forDiversity, Equity, & Inclusion at the Universityof California, Davis. She previously served asAssociate Vice Provost for Strategic Initiativesat the University of Maryland, BaltimoreCounty (UMBC) and Professor of the Practicein UMBC’s College of Engineering and IT(COEIT). She was the Founding Director andCo-PI for the 12-institution National ScienceFoundation University System of Maryland’s(USM) PROMISE AGEP. Tull earned engineeringand science degrees from Howard Universityand Northwestern University, was an Anna JuliaCooper Postdoctoral Fellow at the Universityof Wisconsin-Madison and has held facultypositions at the UW-Madison, and the Universityof Maryland College Park.The UC Davis Office for Diversity, Equity, andInclusion has a robust portfolio that includesdiversity and inclusion education programming,campus climate, regional community relations,and academic diversity. Manuel Calderon de la Barca SánchezProfessor of PhysicsManuel Calderon de la Barca Sánchez hailsMexico City, and started his Physics journeywhen he attended college at the Tec deMonterrey, majoring in Engineering Physics.In Mexico, there were only a few places topursue a physics scientific career, particularly inhigh-energy physics. He enrolled in CINVESTAV(Center for Research and Advanced Study) fromthe National Polytechnic Institute, and won ascholarship for a summer research programat CERN. He entered the area of heavy ioncollisions via the NA49 experiment. This openedup the doors to graduate school in the US,where he obtained his Ph.D. at Yale, doing hisgraduate work in the STAR experiment at theRelativistic Heavy Ion Collider in BrookhavenNational Lab. His thesis work was the firstone to be published by a graduate student inSTAR. He then joined Brookhaven Lab as apostdoc in 2002 and then as a staff scientist in2003. Having a passion for teaching, he joinedthe faculty at Indiana University in 2004. Hethen moved to UC Davis in 2006, has been atUC Davis working on research in heavy-ioncollisions with the STAR detector and at CERNwith the CMS detector. He loves teaching thenext generation of students, and engaging inoutreach opportunities particularly with womenand Latinos in Physics.
