Moses stayed on the mountain for 40 days and receivedfrom the Lord all the laws that were to govern thereligious and secular life of the Israelites. While Moseswas in the mountain alone with God, a strange andwicked thing was done in the camp on the plain. At firstthe people were alarmed when they saw the mountainsmoking and heard the thunder. But soon they grewaccustomed to it, and when day after day passed, andMoses did not come down, at last they said to Aaron“Come now, make us a god that we may worship andthat we may have to lead us. As for Moses, the man whobrought us out of the land of Egypt, we do no know whathas become of him, (Ex 32:1). And when the people sawthat Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, thepeople gathered themselves together unto Aaron, andsaid unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go beforeus; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up outof the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him,”(Ex. 32:23). 4POWER OF IDOLATRY AND REBELLIONThe Israelites felt abandoned by Moses during his absence. They went to Aaron and saidto him, “up, make us gods, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought usup out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him,” (Exo. 32.:1). Modernscholars have suggested that ancient people often used “idols” not as gods, but as “pedestals”on which they imagined an invisible god to be standing or riding; the Israelites who clamoredfor ‘gods” may not have perceived any contradiction between creating images for such use andGod’s prohibition against idolatry.Aaron was not a man of strong will, as Moses was. When his brother Moses was not byhis side, Aaron was weak and ready to yield to the wishes of the people. Aaron said: “If youmust have a god that you can look at, then break off the gold earrings that are in your ears andin the ears of your wives and children, and bring them to me.”5Aaron collected gold from the people, melted it down, and constructed the image of acalf or young bull, a common symbol of the divine in ancient near eastern religions. TheIsraelites acknowledged the calf as their god. Ashe went down the mountain, Joshua joined him andsaid to him: “I can hear noise of war in the camp. It isnot the sound of men who are shouting for victory,nor is it the cry of those who are beaten in battle; it isthe voice of singing that I hear.” 8Moses was angered because he knew the spiritualimpact of their foolish actions. The Bible says, “angerburned hot, and he threw the tables out of his handsand broke them at the foot of the mountain,” (Ex.32:19). The people had violated their covenant withGod. And Moses was so angry when he saw all thewickedness and shame of his people that he threwdown the two tables out of his hands and broke themin pieces upon the rocks.Moses came straight into the midst of the throng, and at once all the dancing and merrymaking stopped. He tore down the golden calf, broke it in pieces, and burned it in the fire andthen ground it to power and threw it into the water. He then made the people drink the waterfilled with its dust. He meant to teach the people that they would suffer punishment like bitterwater, for their wicked deed.Moses “took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it topowder, and scattered it upon the water, and made the people of Israel drink it,” (Verse 32:20). On Moses’ instructions, members of the tribe of Levi put to death 3,000 Israelites who hadworshiped the Calf.Aaron blamed this idolatry on the people. Then Moses stood at the entrance to the campand call out: “Whoever is on the Lord’s side, let him come and stand by me! . . . Slay your friends and your neighbors, if they are worshiping the image.” And onthat day three thousand of the worshipers of the idol were slain by son of Levi.” Then Moseswent before God to intercede for his people thatGod would forgive them.The next morning Moses sought to restore thepeople in God’s good graces. He audaciouslydeclared that if Israel was not forgiven, “blot me, Ipray thee, out of the book which thou hastwritten” (Verse 32:32).9RESULTS OF IDOLATRYGod told them you shall not make for yourself anidol in the form of anything heaven above or onthe earth beneath or in the waters below. Youshall not bow down to them or worship them.Idolatry brings a curse from God. Cursed is theman who carves an image or casts an idol— a thingdetectable to the Lord, the work of the craftsman’sand sets it up in secret (Deut. 27:15). “And theymade a calf in those days, and offered sacrificeunto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of theirown hands. 42 Then God turned, and gave themup to worship the host of heaven; as it is written inthe book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel,have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices bythe space of forty years in the wilderness? 43 Yea,WORSHIP OF IDOLSye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the starof your god Remphan, figures which ye made toworship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon,” (Acts 7:41-43).HOUSEHOLD GODSThroughout the Old Testament, it is evident that the peoples of that day, regarded gods,deities, spirits or angelic powers of various kings as having territorial jurisdiction. Householdgods: Such as those stolen by Rachel from her father, Laban was small portable of ancestors orfamily deities. The possession of these images symbolized the holder’s claim to leadership andproperty. 10 They were symbols of the right of inheritance. The choice of Gideonbecomes more remarkable as the story reveals how deeply his own family and city werecommitted to the worship of the Canaanite god, Baal. Now, at God’s command, Gideon toredown his father’s altar to Baal as well as the Asherah, a totem to a pagan goddess, using aharnessed bull.The villagers were outraged at such sacrilege and wanted to kill Gideon, but his father,Joash, stopped them by saying, “If Baal is a god, let him contend for himself.” Thus Gideongained the name Jerubaal, “Let Baal contend.” Since Gideon had been called by God to deliverhis people from the Midianites, his first act was to put an end to pagan worship among his ownpeople. For it was not until this was done that he could hope to defeat the enemy. Gideondelivered Israel from the destructive raids and achieved a peace that lasted for 40 years. He had70 sons. He refused to be anointed as a king or to establish a dynastic succession for his sons,saying, “I will not rule over you, and my sons will not rule over you: the Lord will rule over you.”11THE SPIRIT OF BAALThe Bible commands the children of Israel to “destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all theirmolded images, and demolish all their high places,” (Num. 33-32). When Ahab built his“ivory house,” he constructed a temple of Baal withquarters for the priest next to the palace. The greaterpart of this sacred structure was a court, enclosedwith thick walls and open to the sky. Within the courtwas a small sacred chapel containing symbols of Baaland the mother-goddess, Asherah. The temple priestand their attendants kept an eternal flame burning ina large dish-shaped brazier on the chapel’s altar.Since Baalist was a nature cult, worshipers joined the priests and temple prostitutes in sacredorgies before the alar, especially at the new-year celebration. They acted out the reproductivetheme so that the gods, who control earth and water, would follow their example and improvethe fertility of agriculture, animals and man.In time of crisis, such as famine or war, these cultists sacrificed firstborn children in the sacredfire to summon the help of their gods. When some Israelite prophets opposed Jezebels’policies, she had several of them executed. 14Ahaz was one who “in every single city of Judah he made high places to burn incense toother gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God his fathers” (2 Chron. 28:23). 15God had to execute judgment and punish Israel for what was frequently referred to bythe prophets as spiritual adultery. The Babylonian captivity was one such judgment.
