Needless to say, 115 yearsof producing young people who have excelled at the highest levels academically, athletically, professionally, and civicallythroughout their higher education andcareers, is a remarkable achievement.over a century continues. The buildingblocks remain in place: eager students;professional, dedicated teachers and staff;caring parents; Home and School Association; strong parish support; and the St.Paul School Foundation. Financial support from alumni and friends completesthe picture. The tremendous value of a St. PaulSchool education cannot be overstated; theacademic achievements over the decadesare testimony. As well, the school’s faithbased environment allows for the valueswe hold dear to be imparted upon thestudents. The long-term results are real:the students excel; they ultimately becomevaluable members of their parishes andcommunities; society as a whole benefits. It is this outside support from alumni and friends that has allowed the schoolto continue its mission, and we ask againthat you open your hearts (and checkbooks) to help the work continue. It is indeed worth supporting St. Paul School—aplace where for so long, so many have become so much. Thank you for your wonderful generosity!Together we can insure that theschool’s amazing record of success forMark Webb,SPSF PresidentGreg ArcuriJackie BertholdJoseph CappuzzelloJeremy CorbiselloRobert EdwardsJulie JohnsonLucille KarnofelMichael ReaJoe RottenbornJohn Paul TolsonBarbara WagnerMark WebbFrank ZamarelliSt. Paul School925 East State St Salem, OH 44460P. 330.337.3451www.stpaul.k12.oh.us/foundationSchool email: Stpaulelemsalem@Youngstowndiocese.orgFoundation email:stpaulschoolfoundation@gmail.comFind us NDFacebook.com/groups/177736046326/St. Paul School Foundation Newsletter 20181

The PartnerReading strategy allows studentsto take turns reading and provideeach other with feedback as a way tomonitor their comprehension of text.Stories come to life when St. Paulstudents share their favorite booksduring an interactive book-talkexperience with friends and family.Dear Alums and Friends,During thepast yearI was greetedwith the words,“My great auntswere ReligiousSisters who wereprincipals at St.Paul School.” I felt very grateful for theinformation the young woman offeredme. She also handed me a donation fromher father for St. Paul School. When Ihear things like this, I feel very proudand grateful for St. Paul School and theway it has blessed many alums with fondmemories. Not too long ago, Peggy Fitch, ourCoordinator of Religious Educationat St. Paul, shared her thoughts about2Catholic Education. She mentionedhow fortunate she was to attend CatholicSchools in grades 1-8. She credits herfamily with teaching her more how tolive the faith and the schools with havingeducated her more with the teachingsof the Church. That is why she sent herchildren to St. Paul School: to continuethe family tradition and because of thequality of education.Parishioners at St. Paul stillremember when she brought herchildren to Mass when they were still inthe infant carrier. They enjoyed watchingher children grow into the considerateyoung people they are today. She says, “I did not considerbringing my children to Mass unusual;we are Catholic, so it is what we do. Thedecision to send our children to CatholicSt. Paul School Foundation Newsletter 2018School was made long before our firstchild was born because we wantedto make sure they were learning ourfaith.” I know that Christians of otherdenominations relate to this, too. Theparents provide the living foundation, while the school affirms and educatesabout the faith.Peggy’s reflections are important tokeep in mind as we work together withfamilies to support the faith they aresharing with their children.Father Bob Edwards

St. Paul School has highstandards and strong motivation, paired with anatmosphere of caring teachers and mentors to fosterexcellence and a high quality of student performance.Above:Daisy, a therapy dog in-training, visits the school to help meetstudents’ emotional needs. She enjoys the smiles and belly rubsthat the students give her. This is part of the school’s effort topromote students’ social and emotional well-being at all times.Friends, Families and Supporters,Saint PaulSchool hashad a wonderfulstart to our 115thyear of educatingthe minds, bodiesand spirits of allthe children. Ourstudents have been busy using 21st-centuryskills to better prepare them as productivemembers in the community. We continueto pride ourselves not only on what we areresponsible to teach the children but also howwe teach the children of Saint Paul School. This year the school faculty is wrappingup a two-year self-study which is theinitial part of the accreditation process forCatholic schools. In 1994 the Bishops ofOhio formed the Ohio Catholic SchoolAccrediting Association (OCSAA). TheOCSAA is a collaborative undertaking of theCatholic dioceses in Ohio and is governedby the superintendents of schools from eachdiocese in Ohio. The purpose of the OCSAAis to strengthen Catholic school identity andto engage Catholic schools in the ongoingimprovement of student learning. This takesplace through the accreditation process thatfollows a six-year cycle. The first two yearsof self-study are followed by four years ofimplementing. The years of implementationare formed around two goals that involvethe Catholic identity and the academicperformance of the school.Throughout this year, Saint Paul Schoolwill be presenting data to show how weperformed toward meeting the goals set inthe last OCSAA cycle as well as data thatproves where we plan to go in the nextaccreditation cycle. An administrator fromthe Diocese of Youngstown will completean internal review. This will be followed bya two-day visit from a team of principalsin which they will complete an externalevaluation. Once that is complete, the schoolwill consider any suggested adjustmentsbefore submitting our entire plan to OCSSAin Columbus for final acceptance. We ask for your prayers of strength andguidance as we continue to work throughthis process to merit reaccreditation forSaint Paul School. I also thank you for yourcontinued support of Saint Paul School.Your support makes it possible for us tobe here in the community for our 115thyear to provide a Catholic education forthe children in Salem and the surroundingcommunities.Mr. David Pancurak,PrincipalSt. Paul School Foundation Newsletter 20183

Catholics make up two-thirds of thestudent population.Sixty-three percent of students receive tuitionassistance. The aid comes from friends of the schooland St. Paul parishioners known as ‘tuition angels,’ theLoyal Christian Benefit Association, the St. Paul SchoolFoundation, and the State of Ohio EdChoice ScholarshipProgram. AlumniNEWSDiscovering and Celebrating Our St. Paul School FamilySince its beginning in 1904, an estimated 4,000 students have walked the hallsof St. Paul School. These alumni, alongwith current and former staff, parishioners, donors, relatives and friends, proudlyshare a common bond as members of theSt. Paul School Family. They are scatteredin 45 states, two territories, the Districtof Columbia, and in seven foreign countries. Since 2000, alumni have celebratedSt. Paul’s 100th (2004) and 110th (2014)anniversaries; held an all-class reunion(early 2000s); enjoyed annual alumninewsletters (starting 2006); followedthe St. Paul School Alumni and FriendsFacebook page (beginning 2009) and theSt. Paul School Foundation Facebook page(starting in 2018); and organized several50-year class reunions.Creating the First Alumni RegisterFor most of the school’s history, a list ofalumni did not exist. That changed in themid 1990s when Barbara Clary, a foundation trustee at the time, spearheaded theeffort to compile the first register of alumninames and contact information. Sheachieved this by tapping the memory ofother trustees who identified St. Paul alumni in the database of Salem High Schoolgraduates that is maintained by the SalemHigh School Alumni Association. (Classrecords prior to the early 1990s have notbeen located at St. Paul School. Individualstudent records have been unavailable because of privacy rules.) Rita Joseph O’Leary,a former foundation trustee and St. Paulgraduate, and Patricia Bauman, a longtimeSt. Paul teacher and principal from 2006to 2012, later enhanced and maintainedthe original register. Following these earlyefforts, the alumni of our St. Paul SchoolFamily stood at about 1,700 names.Photo courtesy of Terry Zocolo and Joe Ciotti.Images such as this eighth grade photo of the St. Paul Class of 1961 have been very helpfulfor identifying St. Paul alumni.St. Paul School Class of 1961. Online lists of Salem HighBy 2011, the register needed a significantupdate. Foundation trustee John PaulTolson, SPS 63, Mary Walpert Mayo, SPS1963, dozens of other alumni and theirrelatives, current and former St. Paulstaff, and friends of St. Paul School, haveworked diligently to achieve the goal oflocating every St. Paul School alum. Forthe past seven years, a daily effort hastried to keep alumni contact informationcurrent and expand the alumni registerwith the names of all former St. Paulstudents to help increase alumni support.Personal contact with hundreds of alumni, friends, parishioners, teachers, relatives, and others has been the primary meansto accomplish this. Class photos have also10 St. Paul School Foundation Newsletter 2018graduates were again used to help thosetrying to recall the names of their St.Paul classmates. Efforts were also madeto identify students who went to highschools such as West Branch and UnitedLocal or who moved from Salem whileattending St. Paul. While the process hasbeen arduous, the alumni now stand atover 3,400 names, double the size of earlyregisters, and a reason to celebrate our St.Paul School Family!Finding AlumniDiscovering whether alumni are living ordeceased and acquiring contact information are the most difficult aspects of thiswork. For many alumni, especially thosewho left Salem long ago, it can be tediousand time-consuming. Online locators,
