A S C P B O A R D O F C E R T I F I C AT I O NASCP BOARD OF CERTIFICATIONAbout the ASCP Board of CertificationAccreditationFounded in 1928 by the American Society for ClinicalPathology (ASCP), the Board of Certification is widelyaccepted as the most influential leader in the field ofcertification of medical laboratory professionals. To datenearly 600,000 individuals have been certified. The ASCPBoard of Certification understands the importance ofimpartiality in conducting certification and qualificationactivities. It manages conflict of interest and ensuresobjectivity by representative membership on its Board ofGovernors from other associations and societies. The Boardof Governors of the ASCP Board of Certification has 24members:The ASCP Board of Certification is accredited by the AmericanNational Standards Institute (ANSI) for certification programswhere certificants complete the Credential MaintenanceProgram (CMP) and hold the following credentials: Five pathologists (nominated by the ASCP); including onemember of the American Society of Hematology Five laboratory professionals (nominated by the ASCP);including one member of the American Association forClinical Chemistry Histotechnician, HT(ASCP)CM Histotechnologist, HTL(ASCP)CM Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP)CM Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT(ASCP)CM Pathologists’ Assistant, PA(ASCP)CM Phlebotomy Technician, PBT(ASCP)CM Specialist in Blood Banking, SBB(ASCP)CM Specialist in Chemistry, SC(ASCP)CM Specialist in Cytology, SCT(ASCP)CM Specialist in Hematology, SH(ASCP)CM Two representatives from the Associationof Genetic Technologists (AGT) Technologist in Blood Banking, BB(ASCP)CM One representative from each of the followingsix additional participating specialty societies: Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG(ASCP)CM» AABB» American Society for Microbiology» American Society of Cytopathology» Clinical Laboratory Management AssociationJ A N U A R Y 2 0 2 2 Diplomate in Laboratory Management, DLM(ASCP)CM Four representatives from the American Societyfor Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS)» American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants2 Cytologist, CT(ASCP)CM Specialist in Microbiology, SM(ASCP)CM Technologist in Chemistry, C(ASCP)CM Technologist in Hematology, H(ASCP)CM Technologist in Microbiology, M(ASCP)CM Technologist in Molecular Biology, MB(ASCP)CMANSI awards accreditation to personnel certificationagencies that meet the International ISO Standard 17024.» National Society for Histotechnology One public member Past Board of Governors ChairCertification and Credential MaintenanceThe ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) represents the goldstandard for certification of pathologists’ assistants andlaboratory professionals.Certification is the process by which a non-governmentalagency or association grants recognition of competenceto an individual who has met certain predeterminedqualifications, as specified by the agency or association.Through their work on various scientific and examinationcommittees, nearly 100 volunteer technologists andtechnicians, specialists, laboratory scientists, physicians, professional researchers, and experts in psychometricsensure that BOC examination processes and certificationcredentials continue to maintain the highest standardsof the laboratory medicine profession. BOC examinationcommittees are responsible for examination developmentand review, determining accuracy and relevancy of theexaminations, and establishing the competence level foreach area of laboratory medicine. The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) provides amechanism for these individuals to be recognized as havingthe necessary competence to perform the medical laboratoryroles they seek. This mechanism is called certification.ASCP BOC certification is time-limited for three years. To remain valid, certification must be maintained bycompleting the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP)as described on page 36.

The ASCP BOC does not consult with a candidate, reviewdocumentation, or determine a candidate’s eligibilityprior to application. Eligibility is determined only after acandidate’s application, fee, and all required documentationhas been received and all items have been reviewed byan evaluator. Application fees cover the administrativecosts of processing applications, including the review of alldocumentation; application fees are not refundable.CERTIFICATION CATEGORIESAND APPLICATION FEESApplication fees are non-refundable.
