PREFACEOver the past few years, the LouisianaDepartment of State Civil Service has reducedthe number of written examinations itadministers from several hundred to fourteen.This number may decrease further as CivilService continues to streamline its testingprocedures. This booklet providesinformation on every written exam currentlyin use and will help libraries find appropriatestudy guides for patrons who are seeking Stateemployment.The first section of the booklet devotes onepage to each exam. There the user will find anoutline of the categories of questions that areasked on an exam, followed by a list of thestudy guides the Reference staff recommends.Most of the study guides are published byArco or National Learning Corporation(abbreviated NLC in the listings) and are notbased specifically on Louisiana Civil Serviceexams.Note that the first section of this booklet listsexams in order by the series number assignedby Civil Service. This enables the user toeasily find the correct breakdown of testquestions when only the examination seriesnumber is known.The second section of this booklet consists ofthose categories of questions, such as EnglishGrammar and Mathematics, that are found onmany examinations. Following each type ofquestion is a list of study guides whichcontain examples of that kind of question.You can use this section of the booklet to findsubstitute study guides or additional guidesfor patrons who have difficulty with thesetypes of questions.The final section of this booklet is the index ofjob titles. Here you will find listed all of thenearly 500 jobs that require a written exam.Look up the job title you need in the index,then consult the page referenced there to findithe appropriate examination outline and list ofrecommended study guides, from which youcan select any that you have on the shelf foryour patron’s use.For most exams, the Louisiana Department ofState Civil Service has prepared brief studyguides, copies of which should be available inevery public library in the state. State agencies are authorized to hire directlywithout going through Civil Service. Jobssuch as these, for which Civil Service does notrequire a written exam, are not included in thisbooklet.Note, however, that the hiring agency maydevise a test of its own for applicants. These arepsychological profile questions, and theanswers given indicate personal preferences.Though there is no recommended study guide,the Arco book for Civil Service Psychologicaland Psychiatric Tests may be of use toapplicants.LearningExpress Library does not providestudy material for specific state exams. Whenyou click on "Civil Service Careers" in the listof tests, you will not find an entry for aspecific state test (Typing Careers Test) ortype of test (clerical). Instead,LearningExpress Library offers one genericcivil service test which covers math, grammar,reading, vocabulary and spelling. There isalso study material for the Federal clericalexam.
