Types of ClustersLocal clusters consist of groups ofindustries that primarily serve the localmarket. Local clusters are not typicallyimpacted by the competitive advantages ofa region or a particular location. Themajority of employment in a region comesfrom local clusters. They are not directlyexposed to competition from outside oftheir direct geography. Some examples oflocal clusters include local health serviceslike dentists and eye doctors.Traded clusters provide products andservices for cross regional markets and theybring in dollars from outside the region. Thedollars generated from traded clustercompanies are important to economicgrowth in the region because they representnew wealth being brought into the arearather than the simple recirculation of wealthalready present in the market. The majority of a region’s jobs and job growthcomes from its local clusters. However, traded clusters generate higherlevels of innovation and offer higher wages. Local clusters typically support the tradedclusters in a region. Both cluster types are important to theeconomic health and vitality of a region’seconomy.Sources. Image: Chicago Fed. Definition: t
