Updated: 12 April 2021Recommended cleaning:Supplementary informationSummaryThis document provides guidance on routine cleaning, and cleaning and disinfectionfollowing a case or suspected case of COVID-19 in a non-healthcare workplace. It covers:1.1 – Cleaning during the COVID-19 pandemic1.2 – Definitions1.3 – Cleaning and disinfecting solutions1.4 – Using disinfectants safely1.5 – Disposal or cleaning of materials and PPE1.6 – Checklist of standard precautions for cleaning1.7 – Recommended cleaning by surface1.8 – Recommended cleaning by item1.8.1 – General1.8.2 – Specialised electronic equipment1.8.3 – Retail1.8.4 – Building and construction1.8.5 – Warehousing and logistics1.8.6 – Transport1.8.7 – Gyms and sporting facilities1.1 Cleaning during the COVID-19 pandemicThe main way COVID-19 spreads from person to person is through contact with respiratory dropletsproduced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets may fall directly onto theperson’s eyes, nose or mouth if they are in close contact with the infected person. Airbornetransmission of COVID-19 can also occur, with the greatest risk in indoor, crowded and inadequatelyswa.gov.au/coronavirusPage 1 of 21

Updated: 12 April 2021ventilated spaces. A person may also be infected if they touch a surface contaminated with theCOVID-19 virus and then touch their mouth, nose or eyes before washing their hands. Researchshows that the COVID-19 virus can survive on some surfaces for prolonged periods of time.A key way you can protect workers and others from the risk of exposure to COVID-19 is byimplementing appropriate cleaning and disinfecting measures for your workplace. When and howoften your workplace should be cleaned and disinfected will depend on the outcome of your riskassessment, including the likelihood of contaminated material being present.A combination of cleaning and disinfection will be most effective in removing the COVID-19 virus. It is highly recommended that workplaces are be cleaned at least daily. More frequent cleaning maybe required in some circumstances. For example, if your workplace operates in shifts, workplacesshould be cleaned between shifts. If equipment is shared between workers, it should be cleanedbetween uses, where practicable.Cleaning with detergent and water is usually sufficient for routine cleaning. However for frequentlytouched surfaces, disinfection in addition to cleaning is recommended.Once clean, surfaces can be disinfected. When and how often your workplace, or certain surfaces, should be disinfected will depend on the likelihood of contaminated material being present, notingthat the COVID-19 virus can survive on some surfaces for prolonged periods of time. This wouldinclude any time there has been a case or suspected case of COVID-19 at the workplace, or atworkplaces with a high volume of workers, customers or visitors that are likely to touch surfaces. You should prioritise cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that many people touch.Alternatively, you may be able to do a 2-in-1 clean and disinfection by using a combined detergentand disinfectant.1.2DefinitionsThe following terms are used throughout this document, to improve readability.Damp dust means to wet a cloth with cleaning agent and wring out, such that the cloth remainsdamp, but does not drip water.Detergent means a surfactant that is designed to break up oil and grease with the use of water.Disinfectant means product labelled as household disinfectant. For disinfection of hard surfaces, this means a product containing alcohol ( 70%), chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach, or wipes or spraysthat contain quaternary ammonium compounds. The Therapeutic Goods Administration publishes alist of disinfectants for use against COVID-19, some of which may be suitable for use on othersurfaces.Frequently touched surface means a surface that is touched often, by the same or differentpeople. For example, a door handle or push plate.HEPA means high efficiency air particulate filter.swa.gov.au/coronavirusPage 2 of 21

Updated: 12 April 2021Infrequently touched surface means a surface that is touched less than a frequently touchedsurface. For example, the surface of a cupboard door.1.3Cleaning and disinfecting solutionsCleaning and disinfecting are two different processes:Cleaning means to physically remove germs (bacteria and viruses), dirt and grime from surfacesusing a detergent and water solution. A detergent is a surfactant that is designed to break up oil andgrease with the use of water. Anything labelled as a detergent will work.Disinfecting means using chemicals to kill germs (bacteria and viruses) on surfaces. It’s important toclean before disinfecting because dirt and grime can reduce the ability of disinfectants to kill germs. The following disinfectants are suitable for use on hard surfaces (that is, surfaces where any spiltliquid pools, and does not soak in): alcohol in a concentration of at least 70%, chlorine bleach in aconcentration of 1000 parts per million, oxygen bleach, or wipes and sprays that contain quaternaryammonium compounds. These chemicals will be labelled as ‘disinfectant’ on the packaging andmust be diluted or used following the instructions on the packaging to be effective. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has published a list of disinfectantproducts that are permitted to claim they are effective against COVID-19.As long as you use a disinfectant containing one of the chemicals listed above inaccordance with the manufacturer’s directions, they will be effective. They do not needto be on the TGA list. For routine workplace cleaning in a non-healthcare workplace, physical cleaning with water anddetergent is usually sufficient. Water and physical effort alone will not kill the COVID-19 virus.A combination of cleaning and disinfection will be most effective in removing the COVID-19 virus inworkplaces when cleaning, and should be used where there is a high volume of workers, customersor visitors that are likely to touch surfaces.Cleaning and disinfection should also be undertaken after a person with a confirmed or suspectedcase of COVID-19 has recently been at the workplace. Those cleaning an area of suspectedcontamination need to be equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Thisincludes disposable gloves and safety eyewear to protect against chemical splashes. If there isvisible contamination with respiratory secretions or other body fluids in the area, the cleaning staffshould also wear a disposable apron.Once cleaning and disinfection is complete, place disposable cloths, PPE and covers in a plasticrubbish bag, place it inside another rubbish bag (double-bagging) and dispose of the bag in thegeneral waste.Note: Disinfectants require sufficient contact time to be effective at killing viruses. If no time isspecified, the disinfectant should be left for ten minutes before removing.swa.gov.au/coronavirusPage 3 of 21

Updated: 12 April 20211.4Using disinfectants safelyFollow all manufacturer’s instructions and read the label and the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Forinformation on how to read labels and SDS, see the Safe Work Australia SDS page.Do not use different types of disinfectants together.Store your disinfectants safely and securely, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Mixyour disinfectants in a well-ventilated area. Some concentrated products recommend the use of alocal exhaust ventilation system. For spraying or misting products, spray directly into the cleaning cloth to dampen the cloth for use.Take care not to generate a mist.Personal protective equipment (PPE) to use when diluting and using disinfectants includes gloves,elbow-length if available, and eye protection (safety glasses, not prescription glasses).1.5Disposal or cleaning of materials and PPEReusable, washable cloths, personal protective equipment (PPE) and covers should be washed in aregular cycle wash using the warmest possible setting with normal washing detergent. Avoid shakingout the items before placing in the washing machine.Wear disposable gloves to handle used cloths, PPE and covers. Wash your hands thoroughly withsoap and water for at least 20 seconds after removing the gloves.Regularly wash the hamper in which used PPE is stored while it is waiting to be laundered. If thehamper is not washable, use a disposable lining, and replace regularly.Reusable, non-washable PPE such as eye protection, should be wiped clean with a detergentsolution first, then wiped over with a disinfectant, and left to air dry. Smearing or residues mightresult, and this can be cleaned off by using more detergent solution and rinsing clean only after thedisinfectant has dried.1.6Checklist of standard precautions for cleaning Where cleaning on or around electrical equipment/fittings, isolate electrical equipment and turnoff power source if possible before cleaning with liquids. Read the label for the detergent or disinfectant and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Obtain a copy of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the detergent or disinfectant and becomefamiliar with the contents. Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) that is identified on the label and theSDS.1.7Recommended cleaning by surfaceThe following table outlines the recommended minimum frequencies for routine cleaning of varioussurfaces in the workplace, as well as recommended cleaning and disinfecting following a suspectedor confirmed case of COVID-19.It is applicable to all workplaces, noting some surfaces may not be relevant to all workplaces.swa.gov.au/coronavirusPage 4 of 21
