With the 162issued in November and the 184 issued in October, that’s 569 new homes starting in the last quarter of2019. In the coming months, when those homes arecompleted, we’ll be welcoming more than 1,000 newneighbors to Charlotte County. We’re seeing increases in building permit activityacross the county in every category: gated communities, subdivisions and infill in mature neighborhoods. The growth is coming from large developments likeBabcock Ranch, subdivisions like South Gulf Cove, apartment complexes like the Springs at Port Charlotteand infill construction in areas of Port Charlotte, DeepCreek, Rotonda, Englewood and more.Commercial activity is also robust, with hotels, retailstores, restaurants, storage facilities, auto repair shopsand service stations in the pipeline, under construction or already open for business. Subdivisions thatsuffered during the housing bust and financial crisis of2007-2008 are reemerging, such as Heritage Landings (the former Tern Bay) on Burnt Store Road. Newsubdivisions are being platted on long-vacant property, including adjacent to the Murdock Village Community Redevelopment Area, fulfilling another goal of thevillage vision to invigorate the area between U.S. 41and State Road 776. West Port and Lost Lagoon inMurdock Village will bring even more commercial andresidential development. It’s an exciting time forCharlotte County.

Medical Supply RFID InventoryIt was about this time last year when Charlotte County Fire &EMS began the investment into an inventory tracking programthat is up and running thanks to the hard work of SupportServices. The medical supply RFID inventory program cantrack inventory needs and the supplies used in the field. Thebenefits of such a program are wide-ranging to both the crewsin the field, as well as, the Support Services team andAdministration. Additionally, members will not need to fill outa form and submit a weekly order for items that aretagged. Support Services can conduct a complete mainsupply inventory, to include expiration dates on medicalsupplies and medications in ten minutes, as opposed to theprevious day and a half.Support Services give the medical supplies and medicationsRFID (radio frequency identification) tags before they are sentto a station. Station storage rooms are set up with plasticshelves with wired antennas that are feeding data to a cloudnetwork. These antennas read the RFID tags on direct andAdjacent shelves, and the surrounding space. Each tag carriesthe details of the item it is attached to, such as; item name, expiration date, price, and location. Within our network, eachstation has an established par (periodic automatic replenishment)level. The readings taken by these station antennas compare tothe established par level for that station, thus establishing a “picklist”. All of this is being accomplished without crew interventionsto count items against a list and date, or filling out and submittingan order form. Support Services will then pull the picklist and fillthe order. This new direction in inventory ordering/tracking has taken sometime as a procedure and program had to be built to suit ourorganization’s operational needs. The objective of our RFID inventory program is to reduce timespent tracking and ordering supplies, ensure accurate quantitiesand service dates, track cost liabilities, trends and reduce cost inthe form of product and work hour utilization.
