RADIOWhat’s Up for KQED Public Radio in 2022?I’m Ernesto Aguilar and I’m honored to serve as KQED’s newest Director of RadioProgramming. As part of our commitment to keepingKQED relevant, we also deliver podcasts, stream KQED Live events, air educationalendeavors with local students as well initiatives such as KQED En Español and otherseries and shows. In the new year, we have even more in store for you.Expect more of our signature journalism. We'll keep an eye on midterm elections, housing issues and pivotal Supreme Court rulings. We’ll bolster the local newsyou rely on to keep you informed. We’ll deliver news specials that will providedeeper insight into the stories you care about. And we'll help give context to what'shappening in the Bay Area. The California Newsroom, a statewide news hub led byKQED, will focus on what matters most to Californians. Finally, in 2022, KQED willdo more to welcome and serve diverse next-generation listeners, aiming to makethem feel more at home.Ernesto Aguilar; photo by David Britton. As we build on this remarkable legacy for an even brighter tomorrow, feel free toreach out at kqed.org/radiofeedback. I look forward to learning from you.PODCASTSWhat are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Caroline Smith, KQED’s engagement producerfor MindShift and Forum, what she recommends. Here are her picks.STARTER EPISODE“Neglect of Duty”On Our Watch is the definition of accountability journalism — the podcast uncovers once-sealedCalifornia police records and tells their stories using the voices of people impacted. Each episodeis harrowing, but I've especially thought about "Neglect of Duty" every week since it aired, and thehuman error that caused life-altering harm.STARTER EPISODEAndrea Lee's reading of "Barn Burning" on the New Yorker Fiction Podcast was my introduction toMurakami. I often make fun of the way Murakami writes women (to paraphrase, "in the mirror sheadmired her breasts"), but the man knows how to tell a story that gets under your skin and Lee'sreading amplifies the ending's gravitas.STARTER EPISODE“Bewitched with Dana Schwartz”While I only listen to Blank Check episodes on movies I've seen, each episode’s two-hour-plus runtime pays such loving attention to the featured film while also poking fun. This episode shows how youcan both love making fun of the ridiculous 2005 film Bewitched and love it.KQ E D.O RG JA N UA RY 2 0 2 2“Andrea Lee Reads Haruki Murakami”5
