What is A Discipleship Path?A path can be described as a trail formed by the feet ofpeople or animals. It is also a way of life, conduct, or thought.Paths can be straight and simplistic, but more often than not, paths are found to be winding and mysterious. Not everyonerecognizes their path, where to go, or sometimes even whereto begin. Here at Epworth, we use the language of path as aword to guide you in the different levels of growing as adisciple, typically organized through Bible study or someother form of spiritual formation by topic. What you’re holding in your hands is a guide for those of youwho are looking to take charge of your own spiritualdevelopment. Through this guide, you can view all of theavailable options, the various pit stops along the way inwhich you can relax and pitch a tent for a little while beforeheading out on your path once more. While your path may look different than anyone else’s, theyare all designed to lead you to the same conclusion: becominga disciple of Jesus Christ who is identified by their acts ofloving, growing, and serving. As we begin this journey, you will notice many of the classesare focused on loving. Over the next three years (2018-2020)we will be focusing on the various aspects of our vision, beginning with loving (2017-18), following up with serving(2018-19), and concluding with growing (2019-20).If you have any questions, we would really love to speak withyou, feel free to contact us using the information below.Rodney Frieden Senior Pastor rodney.frieden@inumc.orgPat Engel Director of Discipleship engelp@epworthindy.orgAaron Taylor Director of Family Ministry taylora@epworthindy.org3

LegendAcknowledging that everyone’s path is unique, we wanted totake into consideration that we all have different startingpoints for each particular area of growth. We’ve done our best to craft courses and events to helpeveryone achieve growth, no matter what their backgroundin the point of emphasis. Therefore, along the path it will be important to watch outfor the road signs which will guide you to the path that isright for you, but in order to use them, you’ll need to have asolid understanding of what these signs mean.Level One—Getting StartedThese courses, events, etc. are perfect forsomeone with an entry level of understanding,or even no understanding at all.Level Two—Growing Our FaithMaybe you know quite a bit about the subjectmatter, but don’t really feel like an expert in it.Then Level Two courses and events are perfectfor you.Level Three—Setting RootsYou’re fairly experienced in the subject, but youfeel like there’s still room to grow. That makesyou a perfect candidate for Level Three coursesand events.4

Getting StartedJust like any tool, this catalog would be useless if you weren’ttaught how to use it. So, let’s walk through developing ADiscipleship Path.Sunday MorningWorshipWorship is the most foundational act of loving that we can dotogether, because as we come together at 9:30 every Sundaymorning, we are practicing loving God, loving ourselves, andloving others.
