welcome!It is my honor to serveas President of theSLO Symphony Boardof Directors for the2020-21 season.We started this year with exciting plans forchange and growth with the hiring of ournew Executive Director, Anna James Miller.But, like everyone, we were soon facedwith the constraints of COVID-19.Though these are difficult times, we aredetermined to stay focused on one of thecore principles of the SLO Symphony, to“contribute to the cultural vitality of theCentral Coast community”!Things may look different, and we may notbe able to be together physically, butcurrent challenges have brought out the

best in our staff, musicians andvolunteers. Now, more than ever, we arecommitted to continue the legacy ofproviding great music and culture foreveryone.The SLO Symphony has been an integralpart of this community for 60 years. Thework of the Symphony has always been acollective effort, and this year is noexception.I want to thank our conductor AndrewSewell, members of the orchestra, staff,committee volunteers and my fellowboard members, especially Mark Sherman,our past board President.I would also like to thank oursupporters. Peled’s conductingengagements include debuts with CityMusicCleveland and the Peabody Symphony Orchestraas well as leading his own Mount Vernon Virtuosi.Peled also performs this season with theGoldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio in Washington,D.C.; Yellow Springs, Ohio; and New York, NY.One of the most sought-after cello teachers inthe world, Peled has instructed students whohave gone on to garner top prizes and finalistspots at prestigious international competitionssuch as the Carlos Prieto InternationalCompetition in Mexico, the SchoenefeldInternational competition in China, and YoungConcert Artist Guild in New York. Peled is founderof the Amit Peled Cello Gang, a touring groupcomposed of students from his studio at thePeabody Institute, where he has taught since2003 and was one of the youngest professorsever hired by a major conservatory. He is alsoconductor and artistic director of the MountVernon Virtuosi, a chamber orchestra dedicated

to launching the careers of recently graduatedstudents. Peled is a founding member of theTempest Trio with pianist Alon Goldstein andviolinist Ilya Kaler.Peled’s discography includes acclaimed CDs onthe Naxos, Centaur, CAP, CTM Classics, and Deloslabels. Upcoming album releases include aCassado recording for Naxos and the secondinstallment of the Bach Suites for CTM Classics. executive directorAnna James Miller isa former professional balletdancer and dance teacherwith over a decade ofperforming arts leadershipexperience.The child of four-timeGrammy Award-winningcellist and composer Eugene Friesen, music hasplayed a major role in their life since childhood.Originally from the East Coast, Anna moved to theSeattle area in 2000 and worked for organizationsincluding Seattle Opera, Northwest ChamberOrchestra, Spectrum Dance Theatre, Icicle Arts,Icicle Creek Theatre Festival, Federal WaySymphony, Auburn Symphony, and BremertonSymphony. Most recently, Anna worked in acommunications role with Kitsap CommunityFoundation, organizing a regional day of givingwhich raised 2.2M for 337 local nonprofits, andassisting with the launch of a COVID-19community relief fund and resource directory.

With a deep passion for education as well as thearts, Anna taught funding and grant writing fornonprofits at Olympic College’s Business andTechnology Division and served as a teachingassistant for graduate and PhD courses inGonzaga University’s School of Leadership Studies.They hold a Bachelor of Arts in arts administrationfrom the University of Massachusetts Amherst, aMaster of Arts in organizational leadership fromGonzaga University, and professional certificates inadvanced fundraising and grant and proposalwriting.Anna and their visual artist spouse Bryan, alongwith their young daughter Cassidy, are excited tobe in San Luis Obispo. music directorMaestro Andrew Sewellenters his fourth season asmusic director of the SanLuis Obispo Symphony andtwenty-first season with theWisconsin ChamberOrchestra, having had longtenures with the Wichita,Toledo and Mansfield, OhioSymphonies.Known for his innovative programming and knackfor discovering new talent, Sewell is a highly skilledorchestra builder with a wide knowledge and rangeof repertoire.In demand as a guest conductor, he has led theToronto, Detroit, Milwaukee, Columbus, Syracuse,Illinois, Monterey, Gulf Coast and Eugene SymphonyOrchestras, as well as the New Zealand SymphonyOrchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, ChristchurchSymphony, National Symphony of Mexico, KyushuSymphony (Japan), City Chamber Orchestra of HongKong, OK Mozart Festival, WI Peninsula MusicFestival and Masterworks Festivals in the US andLondon.In 2019, Maestro Sewell returned to guest conduct

the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong for theseventh time, in honor of their twentieth anniversaryseason.A native of New Zealand, Maestro Sewell received hismusic training on the violin, piano and cornet, andbegan conducting at age 16. Six years later, he madehis professional opera debut with the Mercury Operaand the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Winningthe Australian Guarantee Corporation’s YoungAchiever’s Award allowed him to further his studiesabroad. Sewell holds a Master of Music degree withHonors in Conducting from the University ofMichigan. While not conducting, he enjoys cyclingand other outdoor pursuits and visiting family inNew Zealand. He and his wife, Mary have threegrown children and reside in Madison, Wisconsin.Over the years he has been credited with numerousawards for services to music including the 2017,Service to Music Award from the Association ofWisconsin Symphony Orchestras, the 2013 RabinArts Youth Award for Individual Achievement by theWisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the 2005 BestIndividual Artist Award by Wichita Arts Council, and2005 Musician of the Year by the Wisconsin StateJournal, for services to music and the greater artscommunity.
