Equipping The SaintsMinistry Outreach PlanThe next three pages are the most important pages in the Equipping The Saints course for severalreasons. They: make the Equipping The Saints course an on-the-job training program, make the Equipping The Saints course training practical and not just cognitive, and make the disciple reproduce in others what is being taught. The end product or objective of Equipping The Saints is to make you a reproducing disciple. From theonset of your training you must start praying for two people to win to Christ. This engages you in evangelism—fishing for people. You also begin praying for one person to disciple. This causes you to reachback into the church for people who are not growing the way they should in their walk with God.Ministry Prayer GuideOn the next page you will find the Ministry Prayer Guide. This will help you identify potential peoplefor your ministry.Non-Christian FriendsMake a list of all your non-Christian friends and begin to pray for them. When you have peace from Godabout a name, move the person to the evangelism section of your Ministry Discipleship Guide and followtheir four line syllabus. Move the person to the Ministry Prayer Tree in the space marked “Convert”.Christian FriendsMake a list of Christian friends who do not seem to be growing in their walk with God. When you havea commitment from a person to go through Equipping The Saints with you, write the name in theDisciple-Making section of your Ministry Discipleship Guide and on your Ministry Prayer Tree on theline marked “Disciple.”Ministry Prayer TreeThe Ministry Prayer Tree helps you visualize God’s plan for your ministry. Write your name in the box onthe left side of the page. The three you win and disciple must be trained to reproduce the next generation.Set your heart now to labor until at least this page is filled with your spiritual children. What a wonderfulgift of obedience this would be to present to your Savior at the Judgment Seat of Christ!Ministry Discipleship GuideThis guide will direct you in what to do with your converts and disciples until we get to this subject matter laterin your training.EvangelismThe four-point outline will guide you in what to do with the people you want to win.DiscipleshipThe nine-point outline will guide you in what to do with your new convert or disciple as you help theperson grow toward discipleship.ix

CHAPTER ONENOTESCharacterDevelopmentDefinition of CharacterWhat is character? Character is the sum total of personaltraits possessed by an individual that makes him whathe is. Character has special reference to moral qualities, ethical standards and principles which govern a person’sconduct and cause him to choose one course of action overanother.Christian character growth is based upon our allowing Godto develop His attributes in our personal lives. In 2 Corinthians Paul says:And all of us, with unveiledface (because we) continue tobehold (in the Word of God)as in a mirror the glory of theLord, are constantly beingtransfigured into His veryown image in increasingsplendour and from onedegree of glory to another(for this comes from the Lord[Who is] the Spirit).2 Corinthians 3:18 (AMP)We can see from the previous passage that character development is a continuous process in our lives and is dependentupon our constant “beholding” of the Lord through His Word.Peter also emphasizes this in 2 Peter:Do you want more and more of God’s kindnessand peace? Then learn to know Him better and3

NOTESbetter. For as you know Him better, He will giveyou, through His great power, every thing youneed for living a truly good life: He even sharesHis own glory and His own goodness with us!And by that same mighty power He has givenus all the other rich and wonderful blessingsHe promised; for instance, the promise to saveus from the lust and rottenness all around us,and to give us His own character. But to obtain these gifts, you need more thanfaith; you must also work hard to be good(VIRTUE), and even that is not enough. For thenyou must learn to know God better and discoverwhat He wants you to do (KNOWLEDGE).Next you must learn to put aside your owndesires (TEMPERANCE) so that you willbecome PATIENT and GODLY, gladly lettingGod have His way with you. This will makepossible the next step which is for you to enjoyother people and to like them (BROTHERLYKINDNESS) and finally you will grow to lovethem deeply (CHARITY). The more you goon in this way, the more you will grow strongspiritually and become fruitful and useful toour Lord Jesus Christ.2 Peter 1:3-8 (LB)It is clear, therefore, that Christian character requires weconstantly work at these areas of our life as we walk byfaith daily. We can never become what God wants us to beon our own strength—we must trust Him to produce Hischaracter in us. But neither can we simply sit back andwait for this to happen spontaneously. We must work hardat obeying what God reveals to us from Scripture. Growthin Christlike character is clearly a matter of allowing God’sSpirit to indwell our lives completely. This will allow thefruits of the Spirit to become evident in our lives. (Pleaserefer to Galatians 5:22,23 for a definition of Fruits of theSpirit.)4

It is for this reason that the basics of the Christian lifeare so important. The Word and Prayer Hands (studiedpreviously) help us to continue in God’s Word so that weare beholding God as He has revealed Himself to us. Welive in a day and age in which people are recreating Jesusinto their own image and their characters are affected as aresult of their pride and arrogance. We also have a faithfulenemy who is trying to distort the image of God so that wedisobey and no longer walk in obedience.NOTESNotice how Christian character traits are emphasized in theOld and New Testaments, and how drastically they differfrom our own fleshly standards in the following chart.Character TraitsSolomonPaulFleshly TraitsPeterJesusChristian Character TraitsProverbs 6:16,17Galatians 5:19-21Galatians 5:22,232 Peter 1:3-8Matthew 5:3-12Proud Look(Pride)CarousingLoveVirtuePoor in SpiritImpurityJoyKnowledgeMournLying TongueLicentiousnessPeaceTemperanceMeekBlood Shedof the linessHunger andThirst for RighteousnessEnmityGoodnessBrotherly KindnessMercifulStrifeFaithfulnessQuick to do EvilJealousyGentlenessFalse WitnessAngerSelf-controlDiscordSelfishnessWicked PlottingHeartPureCharityPeacemakersRejoicing inPersecutionDissensionParty SpiritEnvyDrunkennessImmorality5

NOTESHow Character is FormedWhen God is in control of our lives He produces His fruitsor attributes in our characters (Thesis). But if we allowSatan to be in control, he will either produce the directopposite of God’s fruits (Antithesis) in our characters, ora compromise (Synthesis). Either of these alternatives isless than God’s best and prevents us from becoming whatHe wants us to be.Every believer is a new creation in Christ. His inner manhas been born again by the Spirit of God. Therefore, hehas a new capacity to develop a character which reflectsthe qualities of Jesus Christ. These qualities of life are theChristian traits that we have already listed.Sometimes Christians fail to form a character which glorifies God. Why does this happen? Although our inner man issaved, our outward man is still corruptible and perishing, and awaiting completed redemption. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even thoughour outward man is perishing, yet the inwardman is being renewed day by day.2 Corinthians 4:16And not only they, but we also who have thefirstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselvesgroan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for theadoption, the redemption of our body.Romans 8:23The desires of the flesh press us to give them an opportunityto be manifested through our bodies. Daily, decisions aremade in our inner man—whether to obey God’s will andfollow the leading of the Holy Spirit who lives within us,or to yield to the desires of the flesh. God created us with awill, an intellect, and emotions. Satan will try to influencethese three faculties to condone evil thoughts (intellect), toyield to what feels good (emotions) or to act upon what wewant rather than what we know is right (will).6

To develop true Christian character traits we must notwalk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Thismeans bringing every thought (intellect) into captivity to theobedience of Christ, submitting our feelings (emotions) tothe scrutiny of the Word of God to see if they are in accordwith His desire for us, and yielding our wills to the Spirit’scontrol so that we obey instantly and joyfully God’s revealedwill for us in His Word (will).NOTESAs our mind, emotions, and will, are brought into the serviceof the Holy Spirit who lives within us through obedienceto God’s Word, the works of the flesh will not be manifestin our bodies. Instead, Christian character traits will beformed in our lives. When the inner man, influenced by the Wordof God and the HolySpirit interact with thedecision-making pro- Innercess of the intellect, Manemotions, and will, thedecision honors God.Honors GodIntellectEmotionsWillDishonors GodWhen the outer man, influenced by the appetites of his old fallenOuter nature and Satan interMan act with the decisionmaking process of theintellect, emotions, andwill, the decisions tendto dishonor God.7

NOTESWe must therefore be very clear what we allow our mindto feed upon. If we continue to behold daily the glory ofthe Lord through His Word, God will be in control of ourdecision-making mechanism. But if we continue to feedthe physical or fleshly part of us through indulgence, lust, impure reading materials, movies, etc., we allow Satan totake control. The choice is ours! Will you let your soul beruled by the Spirit or by your flesh? How to Develop CharacterRecognize the Influence of Your EnvironmentYour home, parents, school, church, job, government, andfriends have a great influence on you. Some of that influencetook place when you were only a child and cannot be erased. However, by careful regulation of your current life-style itcan be overcome. The Holy Spirit—The Chief AgentThe Holy Spirit can transform any Christian’s life into a lifethat will please God. Trust Him to do miracles in you.But we all, with unveiled face, beholding asin a mirror the glory of the Lord, are beingtransformed into the same image from glory toglory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.2 Corinthians 3:18The Word of God—The Chief ToolUnless we are consistently looking to God through HisWord to guide us in our decisions and thought life, wecan never expect lasting character growth to take place.A Christian must continue in the Word in order to have adisciple’s character. Then Jesus said to those Jews who believedHim, “If you abide in My word, you are Mydisciples indeed.”John 8:318

Application and Honest EvaluationNOTESNo amount of Bible reading or study will help unless weput it into action in our lives. But be doers of the Word, and not hearersonly, deceiving yourselves.James 1:22FriendsFaithful are the wounds of a friend, but thekisses of an enemy are deceitful.Proverbs 27:6As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens thecountenance of his friend.Proverbs 27:17 Be open and teachable to godly Christianfriends. Don’t try to save face. Be wise and accept counseland correction—this leadsto growth. Listen to your enemies—don’tbe discouraged by their criticism but askGod to help you evaluate it and make anyneeded changes in your life.Guard Your IntakeBe careful about books, movies, friends, and TV programs. These can be great helps or hindrances to your thought life.Hell and Destruction are never full; so the eyesof man are never satisfied.Proverbs 27:209

NOTESBe of ConvictionOh, the joys of those who do not follow evilmen’s advice, who do not hang aroundsinners, scoffing at the things of God; but theydelight in doing every thing God wants themto, and day and night are always meditating onhis laws and thinking about ways to follow himmore closely. They are like trees along a riverbank bearing luscious fruit each season withoutfail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all theydo shall prosper.Psalm 1:1-3 (LB)Don’t be easily influenced and swayed by the world.Observe the Lives and Teachings of Godly Men andWomenStudy the lives of great men and women of God who haveleft their mark for the cause of Christ. The Bible is full ofmen and women— examples whom God has recorded forour instructions. Now all these things happened to them asexamples, and they were written for ouradmonition, on whom the ends of the ageshave come.1 Corinthians 10:11Seek God’s Help Through PrayerA consistent and earnest prayer life will help us to overcomethe weakness of our flesh.Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh isweak.Matthew 26:4110

Avoid the Traits that God HatesNOTESStudy the Scriptures to learn what things displease God.Being aware of these things will help you avoid them. These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven arean abomination to Him: A proud look, a lyingtongue, hands that shed innocent blood, aheart that devises wicked plans, feet thatare swift in running to evil, a false witnesswho speaks lies, and one who sows discordamong brethren.Proverbs 6:16-19ConclusionIt is our character which either draws people to Christ orrepels them. Character will largely determine the qualityand kind of ministry we will have with others. Godly character is a mixture of faith and disciplined daily walk whichallows us to walk in obedience to God’s revealed will. DwightL. Moody once said, “The world has yet to see what Godwill do in the life of one who is wholly yielded to Him.”Will you let Him do His work in your life?11

CHAPTER ONENOTESPride VS. HumilityIntroductionIn a fallen world where men and women have rejected theirCreator, pride abounds. God has been removed from Hisrightful throne as Sovereign Ruler of the universe. Self nowreigns. As a result of man’s pride, the world isfilled with sin and evil, and man is sufferingthe consequences because he rejects the onlyOne Who could put things right. Because ofits horrible and devastating nature, it is oflittle wonder that God hates pride.DefinitionThe dictionary defines pride like this:To be lifted up; arrogant; haughty;inflated with self-esteem.Pride means placing ourselves in a position that God neverintended, and being dissatisfied with the place that God hasfor us in His plan for the universe.Pride—The First SinIn Isaiah we are given insight into Satan’s sin.How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down tothe ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: “I will ascendinto heaven, I will exalt my throne above the13

NOTESstars of God; I will also sit on the mount of thecongregation on the farthest sides of the north;I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, Iwill be like the Most High.”Isaiah 14:12-14Here we see that five times Satan rejects the place whereGod has set him and tries to usurp the throne of God. I will ascend into Heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars. I will sit also upon the mount of thecongregation. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the Most High. Not only did Satan reject God’s plan and place for himself, but he also deceived Eve into rejecting God’s plan formankind. Now the serpent was more cunning than anybeast of the field which the LORD God hadmade. And he said to the woman, “Has Godindeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree ofthe garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent,“We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midstof the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eatit, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” And theserpent said to the woman, “You will not surelydie. For God knows that in the day you eat ofit your eyes will be opened, and you will belike God, knowing good and evil.” So when thewoman saw that the tree was good for food, thatit was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable tomake one wise, sh
