The program is open to generic (basic)and RN students. Upon graduation, generic students areeligible to write the NCLEX examination to becomeregistered nurses.The Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and HealthSciences also offers a Master of Science degree inNursing, a Ph.D. in Nursing, and Doctor of NursingPractice degree as well as selected continuing educationcourses.Undergraduate Catalog 2020-2021Program ObjectivesUpon completion of the BSN, graduates will be able to:1. Synthesize knowledge from nursing and relateddisciplines in the provision of care to clients within thehealth-illness continuum throughout the life span.2. Utilize creative leadership to promote quality healthcare and patient safety in a rapidly changingmulticultural, multiethnic, and global environment.3. Synthesize and apply evidence and research findingsfrom nursing and from other disciplines to improve orchange nursing practice.4. Use appropriate and current technology and skills inthe delivery of safe and effective patient care.5. Function as an advocate and change agent ininfluencing healthcare policies, delivery, economics,and health disparities to improve the quality of healthfor diverse populations.6. Collaborate and communicate with members of thehealth care team in the delivery of individualized,cost-effective and ethical health care services.7. Utilizetheoreticalknowledgeandclinicalcompetencies in caring for culturally diversepopulations in a variety of clinical settings.Program PoliciesStudents who enter FIU without an Associate of Arts (AA)degree, transfer from out-of-state, or transfer from aprivate community college must meet the FIU corecurriculum requirements. See a nursing advisor (305) 3487703 in the Office of Student Services for admissioninformation.Nursing majors are responsible for transportationexpenses related to clinical experiences. They arerequired to carry health and accident insurance. Tosafeguard the health of clients, nursing students arerequired to submit proof of health examination andimmunizations upon entry into the nursing program.Students must submit proof of basic cardiopulmonaryresuscitation (CPR) certification (American HeartAssociation) prior to entering clinical courses in thenursing major. This CPR certification must cover theperiod of enrollment in the major.The Florida Board of Nursing and clinical agenciesrequire the disclosure of arrest and conviction records formisdemeanors and/or felonies; therefore, this informationwill be required at the time of application. Applicants arerequired to submit to criminal background checks and drugtesting. Expenses associated with background checks anddrug testing (including repeat testing) are the responsibilityof the student. Findings may affect a student’s ability toparticipate in clinical experiences and complete theprogram, and/or obtain registered nurse licensure.In addition to undergraduate tuition and fees, nursingstudents may be charged a fee for courses with an “L”suffix for laboratory supplies.Students who request a transfer from another nursingprogram must provide a letter of good standing from thenursing program in which they were enrolled.The College reserves the right to terminate a studentfrom the nursing program for reasons related to theinability to safely carry out professional responsibilities.
