Commission on Dietetic RegistrationCandidate HandbookINTRODUCTIONSpecialist board certification for registereddietitians is offered by the Commission onDietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialingagency for the Academy of Nutrition andDietetics in the areas of gerontological nutrition,obesity and weight management, oncologynutrition, pediatric nutrition, pediatric criticalcare nutrition, renal nutrition and sportsdietetics. CDR specialty board certification isgranted in recognition of the applicant’sdocumented practice experience and successfulcompletion of a computerized examination inthe specialty area. The Board CertificationSpecialist in Pediatric Nutrition is offered yearround. The examination consists of 150 multiplechoice questions. It is essential that you keepthis Candidate Handbook readily available forreference until you have successfully completedthe examination. Studies andreports concerning candidates will contain noinformation identifiable with any candidate,unless authorized by the candidate.CSP PRACTITIONER DEFINITIONSpecialists in Pediatric Nutrition are experiencedregistered dietitians who apply evidenced-basednutrition knowledge in providing medicalnutrition therapy for pediatric patients.Specialists who work directly with healthyand/or ill children (newborn up to 21 years ofage) as well as children with special health careneeds in a variety of settings (hospitals, clinics,community-based and/or family centeredprograms, ,education programs, home, etc.). ORindirectlythroughmanagement,carecoordination, education, quality improvement,or research practice linked specifically topediatric nutrition.CDR asks that each practitioner work to maintainthe integrity of the CSP examination so that wemay continue to provide a quality certification—one that highlights the CSP as the board certifiedexpert in pediatric nutrition. Thus, it importantto not discuss the examination content,questions and study resources. Individuals arescheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.The examination eligibility period is one year.Candidates must schedule and complete yourexamination before their eligibility periodexpires. If an appointment is not scheduledwithin the one-year period, candidates will haveto complete the eligibility application and paythe examination fee again.When the appointment is made, the candidatewill be sent an e-mail providing the time toreports to the Test Center. The candidate willonly be allowed to take the examination forwhich the appointment has been made. Credit card (secondary form)EXAMINATION CONTENTThe examination consists of 150 multiple-choicequestions (125 questions scored questions and25 pretest questions), and is constructed usingapproximately the number of items indicated inthe Content Outline. Pretesting is done to seehow well items perform before they are used inthe scored portion of the examination. Thepretest questions cannot be distinguished fromthose that will be scored, so it is important thatall questions are answered to the best of yourability. Candidates will have to choose the bestanswer from the four options provided.Candidates will have 3 hours to complete theexamination.Employment ID cards, student ID cards and anytype of temporary identification are NOTacceptable as primary identification. Candidatesare prohibited from misrepresenting theiridentities or falsifying information to obtainadmission to the Test Center.COPYRIGHTED EXAMINATION QUESTIONSAll examination questions are the copyrightedproperty of CDR. It is forbidden under federalcopyright law to copy, reproduce, record,distribute or display these examinationquestions by any means, in whole or in part.Doing so may subject you to severe civil andcriminal nistration and security standards that aredesigned to ensure all candidates are providedthe same opportunity to demonstrate theirabilities. The Test Center is continuouslymonitored by audio and video surveillanceequipment for security purposes.ON THE DAY OF YOUR EXAMINATIONOn the day of your examination appointment,report to the Assessment Center no later thanyour scheduled testing time. Once you enter thebuilding, look for the signs indicating PSIAssessment Center check-in. A CANDIDATE WHOARRIVES MORE THAN 15 MINUTES AFTER THESCHEDULED TESTING TIME WILL NOT BEADMITTED.The following security procedures apply duringthe examination: Examinations are proprietary. No cameras,notes, tape recorders, computers, pagers orcellular phones are allowed in the testingroom. Possession of a cellular phone or otherelectronic devices is strictly prohibited and willresult in dismissal from the examination. Only silent, non-programmable calculatorswithout alphabetic keypads or printingcapabilities are allowed in the testing room. No guests, visitors or family members areallowed in the testing room or receptionareas.To gain admission to the Assessment Center, acandidate needs to present two forms ofidentification, one with a current photograph.Both forms of identification must be current andinclude the candidate’s current name andsignature. The candidate will also be required tosign a roster for verification of identity.Acceptable forms of identification include acurrent:1. State issued driver’s license withphotograph4

PERSONAL BELONGINGSNo personal items, valuables, or weapons shouldbe brought to the Test Center. Coats must be leftoutside the testing room. You will be provided alocker or secure folders to store your belongingsduring testing. You will not have access to theseitems until after the examination is completed.You will be asked to pull out your pockets toensure they are empty. If any personal items areobserved in the testing room after theexamination is started, you will be dismissed andthe examination forfeited.EXAMINATION RESTRICTIONS Pencils will be provided during check-in. You will be provided with one piece ofscratch paper at a time to use during theexamination. You must return the scratchpaper to the supervisor at the completion oftesting, or you will not receive your scorereport. No documents or notes of any kind may beremoved from the Test Center. No questions concerning the content of theexamination may be asked during theexamination. Eating, drinking or smoking will not bepermitted in the Test Center. You may take a break whenever you wish,but you will not be allowed additional timeto make up for time lost during breaks. Youmay not leave the testing building duringyour break.displayand/oruseelectroniccommunications equipment such aspagers, cellular phones; talk or participate in conversation withother examination candidates; give or receive help or are suspected ofdoing so; leave the Test Center during theadministration; attempt to recordquestions or make notes; attempt to take the examination forsomeone else; are observed with personal belongings,or are observed with notes, books or otheraids.examinationCOMPUTER LOGINAfter your identification has been confirmed,your photograph will be taken. This photographwill also print on your score reports. You will bedirected to a work station where you will beinstructed on-screen to enter your uniqueidentification number (that starts with a Y).PRACTICE TUTORIALPrior to attempting the examination, you will begiven the opportunity to take a practice tutorial.The time you use for this practice tutorial is NOTcounted as part of your examination time orscore. When you are comfortable with thecomputer testing process, you may quit thepractice session and begin the timedexamination. Please note that this practicetutorial is to help you become familiar with thecomputerized examination format; it is possiblethat the problems will not be nutrition related.MISCONDUCTIf you engage in any of the following conductduring the examination you may be dismissed,your scores will not be reported and examinationfees will not be refunded. Examples ofmisconduct are when you: TIMED EXAMINATIONFollowing the practice tutorial, you will begin the3-hour timed examination. Before beginning,instructions for taking the examination areprovided on-screen.create a disturbance, are abusive, orotherwise uncooperative;5

The computer monitors the time you spend onthe examination. The examination will terminateif you exceed the time allowed. A digital clocklocated at the top of the screen updates as yourecord your answers and indicates the timeremaining for you to complete the examination.Comment button to the left of the Time button.This opens a dialogue box where comments maybe entered. Comments will be reviewed, butindividual responses will not be provided. Onceyou leave the Test Center, if you still havecomments, you may forward written commentsto CDR at specialists@eatright.org. Allcomments sent to CDR should be to theattention of Specialist Certification no later than7 business days after the examinationappointment. Please note that the appealprocess is different.Only one examination question is presented at atime. Choices of answer to the examinationquestions are identified as A, B, C, or D. Youmust indicate your choice by either typing in theletter in the response box in the lower left handof the computer screen or clicking the optionusing the mouse. The question number appearsin the lower right hand corner of the screen.To change your answer, enter a different optionby typing A, B, C, or D or by clicking on the optionusing the mouse. You may change your answeras many times as you wish during theexamination time limit.FOLLOWING THE EXAMINATIONAfter completing the examination, candidatesare asked to complete a short evaluation of theirexamination experience. Candidates are theninstructed to report to the Test CenterSupervisor to receive score report. Scores arereported in written form only. Scores are notreported over the telephone, by electronic mail,or by facsimile.To move to the next question, click on theforward arrow ( ) in the lower right portion ofthe screen. This action will move you forwardthrough the examination question by question.If you wish to review any question or questions,click the backward arrow ( ) or use the left arrowkey to move backward through the examination.PASS/FAIL SCORE DETERMINATIONThe methodology used to set the minimumpassing score is the Angoff method, based upondata gathered during the performance of aPassing Point Study by a panel of experts in thefield. The experts evaluated each question onthe examination to determine how many correctanswers are necessary to demonstrate theknowledge and skills required to pass thisexamination portion. Your ability to pass theexamination depends on the knowledge and skillyou display, not on the performance of othercandidates.An examination question may be leftunanswered for return later in the examinationsession. Questions may also be bookmarked forlater review by clicking in the blank square to theright of the Time button. Click on the doublearrows ( ) to advance to the next unansweredor bookmarked question on the examination. Toidentify all unanswered and bookmarkedquestions, repeatedly click on the double arrows( ). When the examination is completed, thenumber of examination questions answered isreported. If not all questions have beenanswered and there is time remaining, return tothe examination and answer those questions. Besure to provide an answer for each examinationquestion before ending the examination. Thereis no penalty for guessing.Passing scores may vary slightly for each versionof the examination to accommodate forvariances in examination difficulty. To ensurefairness to all candidates, a process of statisticalequating is used. Slight variations in difficultylevel are addressed by adjusting the passingscore up or down, depending on the overalldifficulty level statistics for the group of scoredquestions that appear on a particular version ofthe examination.CANDIDATE COMMENTSDuring the examination, comments may beprovided for any question by clicking on the6

INTERPRETING YOUR SCORE REPORTRE-ESTABLISHING ELIGIBILITYThe content area scores on the score reportsare not used to determine pass-fail decisionoutcomes. They are only provided to offer ageneral indication regarding candidateperformance in each content area. Theexamination is designed to provide a consistentand precise determination of a candidate’soverall performance and is not designed toprovide complete information regarding acandidate’s performance in each content area.Candidates should remember that areas with alarger number of items will affect the overallscore more than areas with a fewer number ofitems. The precision and consistency of scoresdiminishes with fewer items and therefore, subscores should be interpreted with caution,especially those that correspond to contentareas with very few items.To take the examination again following a failedattempt, a candidate contact CDR atspecialists@eatright.org. CDR requires a 60- daywaiting period between examination attempts.An examination fee will need to be submitted,however, completing a new eligibility applicationis not necessary if the candidate is within the oneyear eligibility period. If the one year candidateeligibility period has ended then the fee and newapplication would have to be submitted.FAILING TO ARRIVE FOR AN EXAMINATIONA candidate who fails to report for anexamination forfeits the registration and all feespaid to take the examination. A new examinationfee will need to be submitted, however,completing a new eligibility application is notnecessary if the candidate is within the one yeareligibility period. If the one year candidateeligibility period has ended then the fee and newapplication would have to be submitted.QUALITY CONTROL/SCORINGDUPLICATE SCORE REPORTBefore the examination is administered, eachform undergoes quality control checks. Athrough item analysis is completed and is usedas part of the statistical review of theperformance of the examination.Candidates may purchase additional copies oftheir results at a cost of 25 per copy. Requestsmust be submitted to CDR, in writing. Therequest must include the candidate’s name,registration number, mailing address, telephonenumber, date of examination and examinationtaken. Submit this information with the requiredfee payable to CDR in the form of a check, moneyorder or cashier’s check. Duplicate score reportswill be mailed within approximately two weeksafter receipt of the request and fee.SCORES CANCELLED BY THE CLIENT OR PSICDR and PSI are responsible for the validity andintegrity of the scores they report. On occasion,occurrences, such as computer malfunction ormisconduct by a candidate, may cause a score tobe suspect. CDR and PSI reserve the right to voidor withhold examination results if, uponinvestigation, violation of its regulations isdiscovered.APPEALS PROCESSAn individual may appeal decisions regardingCommission policy/procedures (certification,eligibility, certification maintenance, andrecertification) by filing a written appeal.Appeals must be sent to CDR within 30 calendardays after notification of an adverse decisionand will be considered by the CDR AppealsPanel at its next scheduled meeting. A 20.00IF YOU PASS THE EXAMINATIONAll candidates who pass the examination willreceive an orientation e-mail and wall certificate,specialty identification card and orientationmaterials in about four weeks.7

Appeals Review Fee will be required with everyappeal submitted. Appeals submitted withoutthe 20.00 fee will not be heard by the CDRAppeals Panel. Pass the specialist examinationThe reasoning for requiring recertificationtesting is that the Specialist Board Certification isa practice credential, a credential thatrepresents to the public that the certificantpossesses the knowledge, skills and experienceto function effectively as a specialist in that area.The nature of the knowledge and skills topractice at a specialty level is subject to changedue to technological and scientific advances.Recertification testing helps to providecontinuing assurance that the certified specialisthas indeed maintained their knowledge in thespecialty area.RECERTIFICATIONAt the end of the specialist five-year certificationperiod, specialists who wish to recertify must bea current Registered Dietitian with CDR and:1.
