A Glimpse of UCB History and TraditionsSouth HallTable of ContentsHistoryThe Blue and GoldThe University opened itsdoors initially in 1869 inOakland with ten facultymembers and forty students.Women were admitted for thefirst time the following year.In September 1873, theUniversity moved to the city ofBerkeley after the completionof South Hall. This historicbuilding is still standing oncampus and is the onlybuilding that remains from theoriginal campus.Official colors of the Universityof California were establishedin 1868. “Yale blue” waschosen by the University'sfounders, who were mostlyYale University men who hadcome West. They selected goldas a color representing the"Golden State" of California.UC Berkeley sports teams haveworn blue and gold since thebeginning of intercollegiateathletic competition in 1882.Oski the BearOski the Bear is the beloved, cartoonish schoolmascot. He was created in 1941 by a studentnamed William Rockwell who disguised himselfwith a homemade bear head (made of moldedclay), a baggy yellow sweater stuffed withpadding, a giant pair of blue trousers, oversizedfootball shoes painted gold and white cottongloves. Oski became famous for showing up atfootball games, flirting with the girls and clowningnear the playing field. Oski now appears at allhome football games to the delight of manychildren. The true identity of the person wearingthe Oski costume is never revealed. The UC SystemToday, the University of California system hasgrown to ten campuses across California. Theshortened name for the school, “Cal,” is a reminderof Berkeley’s status as the first-established campusof the UC system. The other UC system campusesare located in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Merced,Santa Barbara, San Diego, Davis, Irvine, Riverside, and Los Angeles.Arrival Guide for International Students and ScholarsOskiPage 6
